The highest documented price associated with a drink in Japan is not a bar bill: a unique Yamazaki 50-Year-Old whisky sold at auction in Hong Kong for HK$8,250,000 (US$1,050,000) on May 30, 2026. For drinks listed on a Tokyo menu, the scale is very different: Imperial Hotel Tokyo lists examples from ¥4,000 per serving. These figures describe different markets and units, so they should not be treated as a direct price ranking.
What counts as the most expensive drink?
“Most expensive” can refer to a rare bottle sold to collectors, a bottle’s retail price, or a single drink served at a bar. Auction results for unique bottles can reach sums that have little relationship to what a customer pays for a pour. A useful comparison therefore needs to identify the item, date, location, sales channel, and whether the price is for a bottle or a serving.

Yamazaki 50-Year-Old whisky
Bonhams reported that a unique Yamazaki 50-Year-Old created for Club Natsume sold at its Hong Kong auction on May 30, 2026, for HK$8,250,000 (US$1,050,000). Bonhams described it as a Japanese whisky bottle auction record. This is a completed auction result for a collectible bottle—not a standard retail price, a price for a pour, or evidence that the bottle is generally available to buy. | Drink | Listed price | Where and what the price represents |
|---|---|---|
| Rose Adagio cocktail | ¥4,000 | One menu-listed drink at the Old Imperial Bar, Imperial Hotel Tokyo. Old Imperial Bar menu. |
| Japanese sake | From ¥4,450 | Starting menu price at the Old Imperial Bar, Imperial Hotel Tokyo; the listed starting price is not a single specified sake or a bottle price. Old Imperial Bar menu. |
| Akkeshi single malt commemorating the hotel’s 135th anniversary | ¥4,100 each | Menu-listed price at Imperial Lounge Aqua, Imperial Hotel Tokyo. Imperial Lounge Aqua menu. |
| Imperial Hotel Tokyo signature cocktails | ¥3,500 | Menu-listed price at the Old Imperial Bar, Imperial Hotel Tokyo. Old Imperial Bar menu. |
The Imperial Hotel examples are menu prices at one Tokyo property, not a survey of Japan’s most expensive bars. They are also not comparable to the Yamazaki auction result: the menus price drinks served at the venue, while the auction price is for a rare bottle sold to a collector.
What the sake record does—and does not—show
DASSAI says its Beyond the Beyond 720 ml sake set a record for the highest price achieved for sake at auction. The producer also says its 2024 magnum release was limited to five bottles. The cited producer page does not state the auction price, so a numerical comparison with the Yamazaki whisky or Tokyo menu drinks cannot be made from that information. It also does not establish ordinary current retail availability. DASSAI Beyond the Beyond.

How to compare drink prices responsibly
- Separate the channel: a completed auction sale, a retail asking price, and a bar menu price answer different questions.
- Compare like units: state whether a figure covers a full bottle, a serving, or a starting price for a category.
- Keep the place and date attached: the Yamazaki result was in Hong Kong in May 2026; the hospitality examples are prices listed by a Tokyo hotel.
- Check availability independently: a record auction bottle or limited release should not be assumed to be on sale to ordinary customers.
