A different comparison, Cars.com’s 2024 Affordability Report, names a configured Chevrolet Equinox LS its compact-SUV best-value pick. Which one looks most affordable depends on whether you mean the lowest price shown in a ranking or value measured using broader costs.
Which 2024 compact crossover was listed as the cheapest?
Kelley Blue Book’s current “16 Cheapest Compact SUVs of 2024” page puts the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross first, with a displayed “Starting Price” of $19,900. KBB also classifies it as a compact SUV, gives it a 3.3 expert rating, and lists 25 mpg combined. These are figures reported on KBB’s page; its current price display does not establish the vehicle’s original 2024 manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP).
The next entries on that same KBB page are the 2024 Dodge Hornet and Jeep Compass at $20,100 each, the Ford Escape at $20,200, and the Chevrolet Equinox at $20,400. These are KBB’s displayed “Starting Price” values, not a verified, like-for-like list of original model-year MSRPs. Trim, destination charges, and the date and basis of a price matter when comparing vehicles.
Why Cars.com chose a different compact-SUV value pick
Cars.com’s 2024 Affordability Report selected a 2024 Chevrolet Equinox LS equipped with the Driver Confidence II Package as its compact-SUV best value. The report gives that configuration a median vehicle price of $27,995, compared with a $35,995 median price for the compact-SUV category.

This is not a contradiction with KBB’s ranking: the two sources answer different questions. KBB’s page ranks vehicles by its displayed starting-price figures. Cars.com says its affordability assessment considers median list prices and annual fuel costs, making its choice a broader value judgment rather than a lowest-entry-price result.
Price comparisons need the trim and fee details
A price is useful only when its basis is clear. The 2024 Jeep Compass illustrates why: Kelley Blue Book reported a starting MSRP of $27,495, including a $1,595 destination charge, in a February 26, 2024 article, “2024 Jeep Compass Starts at $27,495”. That dated MSRP figure is not directly interchangeable with the $20,100 “Starting Price” currently displayed in KBB’s cheapest-SUV ranking.

Before treating one crossover as cheaper than another, compare the same kind of price for each vehicle and check whether the destination or delivery charge is included. Also distinguish an original MSRP from a later listing price or an actual dealer offer; the latter can vary by location, vehicle, and timing.
Keep subcompact crossovers in a separate comparison
The Nissan Kicks may appear in searches for affordable crossovers, but Nissan identifies its comparison class as subcompact, not compact. Nissan’s September 19, 2023 announcement for the 2024 Kicks listed U.S. MSRPs of $21,340 for the S, $23,200 for the SV, and $23,900 for the SR, with a $1,390 destination and handling charge stated separately. Those trim-specific prices are in Nissan’s 2024 pricing announcement; they should not be silently folded into a compact-SUV ranking.

What the affordability figures can—and cannot—tell you
Cars.com says its 2024 Affordability Report considered 85 new vehicles. The report also states that Cars.com internal data showed year-over-year growth of 77% in inventory priced under $30,000. That is broad inventory context, not a compact-SUV-specific figure. Cars.com news editor Stef Schrader summarized the wider market: “While prices are down, they’re still nowhere near pre-pandemic levels.”
Neither report establishes what a particular buyer can pay today. Inventory, incentives, dealer offers, and vehicle values depend on date and location. A historical model-year figure or a ranking-page starting price is a useful comparison point, not a guarantee of a current transaction price.

How to choose the right affordability comparison
- For the lowest listed starting price: KBB’s current ranking places the Eclipse Cross first, but do not treat its displayed $19,900 as a confirmed original 2024 MSRP.
- For a broader value assessment: Cars.com’s 2024 report selected the specified Equinox LS configuration using median list prices and annual fuel costs.
- For a purchase decision: Compare the same trim and price basis, account for destination charges, and check local offers. Keep compact and subcompact models in separate comparisons.
