In a recorded employee call reported by GeekWire, CEO Dan Lewis and President Mark Okerstrom described a freight downturn and weaker investor appetite as the forces that overwhelmed the company. Their remarks explain how Convoy’s leaders understood the collapse; they are not, by themselves, an independently verified account of every cause.
What happened at Convoy?
Convoy was a technology marketplace connecting shippers with truckers. GeekWire reported that the Seattle-based company stopped operating on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, after roughly four months spent exploring strategic options. A sale process involving Goldman Sachs did not produce a deal, according to the report.
GeekWire published its account on October 20, 2023, after obtaining and viewing a 13-minute recording of a company-wide employee call. Lewis and Okerstrom spoke without taking questions. Convoy laid off a majority of its workforce.
What did the executives say caused the shutdown?
Okerstrom pointed to freight and capital markets
Okerstrom said the company had been hit by a freight recession and dampened investor appetite, especially for late-stage startups that were not profitable. He also said potential strategic acquirers were facing the same market collapse. GeekWire described declining freight demand and rates as pressures on freight brokerages.

“The truth is, the markets crushed us. There was a perfect storm. But you did great work,” Okerstrom told employees, as quoted by GeekWire.
Lewis described the moment as unimaginable
Lewis told employees, “I hoped this day would never come,” and, “In fact, I really couldn’t fathom it.” Okerstrom acknowledged the emotional toll, saying, “You will be grieving as I have been grieving.”

These statements are the executives’ explanation, as reported by GeekWire. The report documents the market pressures they cited and the unsuccessful strategic-options process, but it does not establish that those factors were the sole or independently proven underlying causes of the shutdown.
What did employees hear about severance?
Lewis said employees would not receive severance. He attributed that outcome to a decision by the company’s lenders, telling employees: “Unfortunately, in the final hour of this, our ability to make that decision and our available budget was taken away by our lenders.” That is Lewis’s account of the decision; GeekWire’s report does not independently detail the lenders’ actions or the company’s available funds.

How large was Convoy before it closed?
GeekWire’s 2023 reporting placed Convoy’s workforce at around 500 employees immediately before the shutdown, down from a peak of about 1,500. The company had raised around $1 billion over its lifetime, according to the same report.
