What the original $899 deal included
AppleInsider reported on October 21, 2024, that Amazon and Best Buy were selling the U.S. 13-inch M3 MacBook Air with an 8-core GPU, 8GB unified memory and 256GB SSD for $899. That was $200 below the $1,099 starting price. The report did not establish a formal, long-running price war; it showed two retailers matching a discount, with duration and inventory uncertain. AppleInsider’s October 2024 report is the source for those figures.
Do not read “M3 MacBook Air for $899” as a specification. Listings can refer to different memory, storage, screen sizes or conditions. A renewed, refurbished or open-box laptop is not equivalent to a new retail unit.

Those were prices reported in the October coverage, not a current inventory guarantee. The source did not provide a complete seller-by-seller audit, so confirm that a listing is new, in stock and sold by a trusted seller at checkout.

Why the later $899 16GB deal matters
In December 2024, AppleInsider reported a different proposition: Best Buy had a 13-inch M3 Air with 16GB memory and 256GB storage at $899, while Amazon delivery could extend past Christmas. Pickup and shipping depended on location. Read the memory and storage fields rather than assuming every $899 result is the original 8GB model. The December report documents that later configuration and availability contrast.
Is 8GB enough for your use?
Good fit for light workloads
- Web browsing, email, streaming and video calls
- Office or school documents and ordinary multitasking
- Travel use where low weight, long battery life and silent operation matter
Choose 16GB for heavier or longer ownership
Sixteen gigabytes is the safer choice for large browser sessions, software development, photo or video work, virtual machines and keeping a laptop for four or more years. Unified memory is built into the system and cannot be upgraded after purchase. WIRED described the M3 Air as capable for everyday work while recommending that buyers consider 16GB if they can afford it. WIRED’s review provides that context.

Browse current listings at Amazon and Best Buy, but treat those pages as live shopping results rather than proof that the 2024 price still exists. A June 2026 Slickdeals report described an expired Amazon Prime offer for a 13-inch M3 with 16GB memory and 512GB storage at $799. Should you buy an M3 Air in 2026?
The M3 is now an older Apple silicon generation. An $899 8GB/256GB unit is sensible only when you need a new Mac immediately, 256GB is enough, the seller is trustworthy and a 16GB or newer-generation Air is not available for a modest premium. The comparison that matters is the exact checkout price of the current MacBook Air, an Apple Certified Refurbished model and a Best Buy open-box unit—not the old $1,099 MSRP alone.
Compare Apple’s current lineup at Apple’s MacBook Air page and changing manufacturer-refurbished inventory at Apple Certified Refurbished. Apple does not guarantee a fixed number of macOS or Apple Intelligence support years for this purchase, so treat the M3’s age as a longevity consideration rather than a promised support timeline.

Which upgrade is worth paying for?
Prioritize 16GB memory
Choose 16GB when the laptop is a primary computer, will be kept for several years or must handle demanding multitasking and creative software.
Prioritize 512GB storage
Choose 512GB if you keep photos, video, music, games or development tools locally and do not want to rely on an external drive. It is especially attractive when the price gap is small.

Consider a newer generation
A newer Air can be the better value if its live price is close and it offers a newer processor, wireless standard, camera or longer expected software runway. Do not assume a specific price difference without checking both carts.
