Microsoft said a January 2025 error wrongly suspended some Rewards accounts

Microsoft acknowledged on January 3, 2025, that an issue had incorrectly suspended some Microsoft Rewards accounts. It said a fix was deployed and that affected accounts should return online “in the next several hours.” That announcement does not establish a new, broad restoration campaign in 2026, nor does it mean every later suspension will be reversed.

What happened on January 3, 2025?

Users reported sudden Microsoft Rewards suspensions around January 3, 2025. Microsoft said some of those suspensions were incorrect, announced that it had deployed a fix, and expected affected accounts to come back online over the following several hours.

Microsoft did not publish the number of affected accounts, the precise technical cause, a list of eligible accounts, or a public checker. Its wording referred to some accounts, not every suspended account. The statement also did not promise automatic restoration for accounts suspended for genuine policy violations.

Windows Central reported that some users saw access return, while others described continuing problems with access, streaks, or support. Those reports do not establish that every account in the incident was restored.

Does that mean every suspended account was restored?

No. The evidence supports a limited conclusion: Microsoft identified an erroneous suspension problem affecting some accounts and said it had fixed it. It does not support a claim that all accounts were reinstated, that every balance or streak was corrected, or that a current suspension is part of the same event.

Later Microsoft Q&A posts show individual users still reporting suspensions and asking how to appeal, including in 2025 and 2026. Those complaints are not evidence of a new Microsoft-wide reinstatement program.

How to check whether your account recovered

1. Sign in to the Microsoft account linked to Rewards.
2. Open the Microsoft Rewards dashboard and check whether the suspension notice has disappeared.
3. Check earning activities and redemption functions separately. Access to the dashboard does not prove that every feature is available.
4. Review your Microsoft account email and any existing support-case messages.
5. If the account appears normal, perform only a normal, legitimate Rewards activity; do not submit rapid searches to test it.
6. Compare your points and streak history with what you remember, but do not assume that restored sign-in means every historical item was restored.

If the problem clearly matches the January 3 incident, waiting briefly after Microsoft’s announced fix was reasonable. A suspension that remains in place, or one that began much later, should be treated as an individual case.

What to do if you are still suspended

Use the official Microsoft Rewards Support form. Sign in with the affected account if possible and submit one concise request for review. Microsoft Q&A guidance directs users to this channel rather than relying on public forum replies.

Include these details

• The Microsoft account email or other account identifier.
• The approximate date and time the suspension appeared.
• The exact wording of the notice, if you saved it.
• Your Rewards country or region.
• Whether you used a VPN, proxy, automation, macros, scripts, multiple accounts, or a shared device.
• Whether the problem began during the January 3, 2025 suspension wave.
• Relevant screenshots, receipts, and existing case numbers.
• A direct request for Microsoft to review the account.

Keep the case number and correspondence, and avoid opening multiple duplicate tickets. Do not create a replacement account to evade enforcement. Do not send a passport, driver’s license, payment-card information, or other sensitive documents unless Microsoft requests them through an authenticated official process.

The January 3 statement addressed account suspensions and the deployment of a fix. It did not guarantee that every point balance, pending redemption, streak, or activity record would be restored identically. If access returns, check each function separately and include any discrepancy in your support request. Avoid unofficial “recovery” services

There is no need to pay a third party to appeal a Rewards suspension. Be wary of anyone promising a guaranteed unban, requesting your password or one-time code, posing as Microsoft support on social media, or asking you to upload identity documents to a non-Microsoft domain.
