Nvidia leads the dated October 2026 technology-sector ranking, followed by Apple, Microsoft and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC). The figures below are from an October 2 snapshot published by The Motley Fool—not a live ranking for October 7. Market-cap lists change with share prices, and publishers do not all define “technology company” the same way.
Largest technology companies: October 2, 2026 snapshot
The Motley Fool’s article, updated October 5, reports these four companies and values in its dated narrative. TSMC’s figure is converted from New Taiwan dollars.
| Rank | Company | Ticker | Market capitalization |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Nvidia | NVDA | $5.65 trillion |
| 2 | Apple | AAPL | $4.87 trillion |
| 3 | Microsoft | MSFT | $3.84 trillion |
| 4 | Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) | TSMC | $2.45 trillion, converted from New Taiwan dollars |
These are the four entries confirmed in the article’s October 2 dated narrative, not a complete top-ten table. The Motley Fool’s separate table refreshed with October 6 data and uses publicly traded shares outstanding, excluding unlisted or non-traded shares; its note says implied market capitalization may vary. Keep those snapshots distinct. Source: The Motley Fool, updated October 5, 2026.
Why other “biggest tech companies” lists differ
There is no single company set established across these rankings. Publishers classify industries differently, use different cutoff dates and may calculate market capitalization under different conventions. A list is meaningful only when read with its source, date and scope.

How to compare market-cap rankings fairly
Before comparing two lists, check the following details; a difference may reflect methodology or timing rather than a contradiction.
- Observation date: distinguish a dated report from a live page that refreshes separately.
- Publisher and calculation: check how shares outstanding are counted, including whether unlisted or non-traded shares are excluded.
- Geographic scope: establish whether the ranking is global or limited to a country or exchange.
- Sector rule: note which businesses the publisher includes as technology companies.
- Currency: check whether values for non-US listings have been converted, as with TSMC in the dated figures above.
What market-cap rank does—and does not—tell you
Market capitalization represents a company’s equity value under the ranking’s calculation convention. A high position establishes relative size within that list at its stated date; it does not by itself establish that a stock is cheap or expensive, predict its returns, or show whether it fits a particular investor. Those questions require analysis beyond rank.
