The largest alluvial gold nugget ever found was the Welcome Stranger, discovered near Moliagul in Victoria, Australia, in 1869. Its reported weight depends on what was measured: Australia Post says the untrimmed nugget weighed more than 100 kg, while smelting produced 71 kg of gold. That is roughly the mass of an adult, though the comparison is an illustration rather than a precise equivalence.
What was the largest gold nugget ever found?
The Welcome Stranger is generally recognized as the largest alluvial gold nugget ever discovered. Cornish miners John Deason and Richard Oates found it on 5 February 1869 at Bulldog Gully, near Moliagul in central Victoria. Museums Victoria and Australia Post both recount the discovery.
Australia Post says the nugget measured approximately 61 by 31 cm and lay about 3 cm below the surface near the base of a tree. Museums Victoria’s account says Deason found it while searching around tree roots. According to that account, he kept the find concealed until dark, when he and Oates dug it out and revealed it to others.
How much did the Welcome Stranger weigh?
There is no single weight figure shared by all institutional accounts. The difference matters because sources report figures associated with different stages or describe the nugget’s weight differently.

Australia Post’s account gives the clearest distinction between the raw mass and the gold obtained: it reports more than 100 kg before processing and a smelted yield of 2,284 troy ounces, or 71 kg. Its page was produced for the 2019 stamp issue and says it is not updated. Other institutional pages give lower figures but do not explain the measurement basis in the same way, so they should not be treated as interchangeable.
Why was the nugget broken up?
The Welcome Stranger was too large to fit on the scales at the London Chartered Bank in nearby Dunolly. Australia Post says it was broken on an anvil before weighing, then smelted. The resulting gold was made into ingots and sent through Melbourne aboard the steamship Reigate to the Bank of England. The original nugget therefore did not survive as a single object.

How did it compare with the earlier Welcome Nugget?
The Welcome Stranger surpassed the Welcome Nugget, found at Ballarat in 1858. State Library Victoria reports the earlier nugget weighed 2,217 ounces (63 kg). The Australian Museum provides a more detailed accounting: 2,217 ounces and 16 pennyweights gross, or 62.85 kg, including quartz, clay and iron oxides; the net gold weighed 2,195 ounces. The Australian Museum’s account makes clear why a gross nugget weight and its gold content are not necessarily the same.

The Old Treasury Building says Deason and Oates shared a fortune of nearly £10,000. The building displays a Welcome Stranger replica made of plaster of Paris and painted from sketches; it is not the original nugget. The Old Treasury Building’s gold-rush history also places the find in the wider context of Victoria’s gold rush.
