Marji Guyler-Alaniz began FarmHer with a simple idea: tell the stories of women in agriculture through photographs. By March 2019, that idea had grown into a broader storytelling project, with television, radio, a podcast and events. A profile by Dave Mowitz in Successful Farming captures that development through the people and everyday work at its center.
From photographs to a wider platform
Guyler-Alaniz’s starting point was to make women’s work in agriculture visible through pictures. In Mowitz’s March 4, 2019 profile, she describes the purpose as capturing “the beauty of women’s everyday work in agriculture.” The project’s format expanded over time: the article reports a television show on RFD-TV, followed by a radio program called Shining Bright, a podcast and FarmHer events.
The profile said FarmHer had celebrated its five-year anniversary the previous October. That is the article’s account of the project’s milestone, not an independently audited founding date. Its description of media and events is also a snapshot from 2019; it does not establish FarmHer’s present schedule or availability.
The women behind the stories
Joanna Fogg’s oyster farm
One story began with a lead that took Guyler-Alaniz and her television crew to meet oyster farmer Joanna Fogg near Bar Harbor, Maine. Mowitz describes Fogg working by the beach with a boat and oyster cages; the article says the cages she picked up weighed 300 pounds. The scene shows the range of agricultural work FarmHer set out to feature, beyond the images of farming many viewers might expect.

Wanda Shanks on cattle and basketball
Another favorite episode for Guyler-Alaniz, according to the profile, featured Tennessee cattle raiser Wanda Shanks. Mowitz described Shanks as 84 at the time and also a Senior Olympic basketball player. Those details belong to the 2019 article and should not be read as current information about her age or activities.
A founder’s sense of momentum
Reflecting on the project, Guyler-Alaniz said, “Imagine, I was given the chance to tell these wonderful stories of women in agriculture, and this has touched off a movement.” That is her description of FarmHer’s effect, quoted by Dave Mowitz in Successful Farming on March 4, 2019—not a measured estimate of its reach or impact.

She also spoke about what sustains the work: “The FarmHer journey has allowed me to meet some amazing women, inspirational women. And that journey continues.” In the same profile, she said the team kept receiving suggestions from around the country. Together, those remarks frame FarmHer as a continuing act of discovery: finding women whose work might otherwise go unseen and giving their stories a platform.
