The Toy Insider’s “Hot 20” is its editorial selection of toys for the 2025 holiday season—not a numbered ranking, sales chart, or guide to what is available now. The 20 picks are grouped by age band, from 0–2 through 8+, and span pretend play, learning toys, plush, collectibles, construction, video games, and trading cards.
What the Hot 20 represents
The Toy Insider published its 2025 Hot 20 on September 17, 2025, as part of its 20th annual Holiday Gift Guide. The publisher described the picks as the year’s most sought-after toys, but the list is an expert selection rather than a ranking among the 20 or a measure of sales. The Toy Insider’s announcement also included a STEM 10 and a 12 Under $20 list. The full guide featured nearly 400 products from 182 toymakers.

The Toy Insider said that more than 70% of toys in the guide were under $50 and more than 175 were under $25. Those figures describe the guide when announced in September 2025; they are not current prices or a promise that a listed toy can still be found at those amounts.

How to use the list when planning a gift budget
The Hot 20 offers a range of play styles and franchises, but it does not provide head-to-head scores or current prices. For a practical shortlist, start with the child’s age and interests, then check the product’s current details and price before deciding.
- Start with the published age band. Use it to navigate the list, then confirm current age guidance and product information with the manufacturer; inclusion alone does not establish that an item is suitable for a particular child.
- Choose a kind of play. The selections include learning toys, pretend-play sets, character toys and plush, collectibles, construction, a console bundle, and trading cards. Pick the type that best matches the recipient’s interests.
- Check today’s total cost and availability. The guide’s September 2025 budget figures are not live offers. Retailer prices, stock, and availability may have changed, so verify them before setting a budget or making a purchase.
For example, Bluey Supermarket by Moose Toys appears in the ages 3–4 group. That confirms its place in the 2025 selection, but not its current price, stock, or availability at any particular retailer.

How The Toy Insider says it selects toys
In an October 9, 2025 report, TODAY described The Toy Insider’s selection approach as involving tests of thousands of toys each year and consideration of play value, developmental benefits, originality, product integrity, and fun factor. The Toy Insider’s announcement itself does not set out a detailed scoring protocol, so the Hot 20 should be read as the publisher’s expert picks rather than as a published comparative test ranking.
The announcement quoted Laurie Schacht, The Toy Insider’s chief toy officer, describing shoppers’ concerns about higher prices, toys selling out faster, limited time to compare options, and uncertainty about costs. That context helps explain the guide’s usefulness as a starting shortlist; it does not make the guide’s budget figures a current price guarantee.
