Tutoring, workshops, courses, and technical products offer other routes, but none comes with guaranteed demand or predictable take-home income. Marketplace rates are benchmarks—not promises—and your actual return depends on billable hours, fees, taxes, and the time spent winning and delivering work.
Which side hustles have the strongest earning potential?
For data scientists with credible experience, the best-supported high-rate option is narrowly scoped consulting or implementation work: for example, auditing an experiment, building a forecasting baseline, evaluating a model, or developing an analytics plan. The value is not simply knowing Python or machine learning; it is delivering a useful business outcome with clear limits.
Upwork’s live data-scientist hiring-cost page lists $35–$250 per hour. That is a buyer-side marketplace benchmark, not a typical worker’s earnings or a guarantee of available hours. Upwork’s 2026 freelance-jobs article lists machine-learning engineer rates of $50–$200 per hour; that broad platform range likewise does not establish what a part-time freelancer will earn after unpaid work, platform charges, or taxes. Specialized consulting and project work
Package the work around a defined deliverable rather than a menu of tools. Possible offers include an analytics audit, churn analysis, demand forecast, experiment review, dashboard, or model prototype. State what inputs you need, what the client receives, how many revisions are included, and what is out of scope. A precise offer helps a prospective client understand what they are buying; it does not guarantee that clients will be available.
#1 Best Overall
Machine-learning implementation and evaluation
Practitioners with relevant experience can offer model development, validation, monitoring, or implementation support. Keep maintenance and support obligations explicit: a bounded prototype can turn into an open-ended second job if data pipelines, deployment, or ongoing monitoring are left undefined.
Tutoring and professional coaching
Teaching Python, SQL, statistics, machine learning, or interview skills can be easier to schedule in individual blocks than a client project. Upwork gives a directional historical-contract range of $20–$40 per hour for virtual tutoring and coaching in its 2026 remote-work article; it is not a guaranteed rate. On Wyzant, listed tutors generally retain 75% of their posted hourly rate, with a 25% platform fee, before applicable taxes. Upwork remote-work rate guidance and Wyzant fee structure.
Rank #2
Useful sessions can focus on a statistics refresher, guided portfolio project, Python debugging, or interview preparation. Coach students through the work rather than completing graded assignments for them.
Courses and workshops
A focused recorded course or live workshop can serve more than one learner, but creating material takes time and sales depend on reaching an audience. A workshop for a team can be a smaller way to test a topic—such as experiment design, forecasting, model evaluation, or communicating uncertainty—before investing in a large course.

Technical writing, templates, and digital products
Reusable notebooks, analysis templates, technical articles, or educational materials can complement an existing consulting or teaching niche. The available evidence does not establish a reliable income range for data-science products. Treat sales as uncertain unless you already have a channel to reach likely buyers; a downloadable product is not automatically passive income.
AI data annotation and model evaluation
Remote-gig listings include AI data annotation with a broad $10–$20-per-hour estimate, but that figure is not specific to advanced data-science expertise and may describe a different kind of work than specialist model evaluation. It can be flexible task-based work, but verify the actual tasks, pay terms, and availability rather than assuming it is high-paying data-science work.
How the options compare
The table distinguishes the practical fit of each path, not a guaranteed ranking of earnings. Published figures come from different platforms and measures, so they should not be compared as though they were equivalent wages.

How to estimate what you will actually earn
An advertised hourly rate is not the same as an effective hourly return. Count all the time and costs required to earn the fee, including work that is not billed to a client.
- Include unpaid hours: finding leads, writing proposals, scoping, preparing, revising, and handling administration.
- Subtract platform fees and expenses: for example, Wyzant’s published fee changes the amount a tutor retains from a posted rate.
- Allow for gaps: a high rate on an occasional project does not mean that rate applies to every hour you have available.
- Account for taxes: the amount left after tax is different from gross receipts.
- Assess fit as well as pay: consider schedule, startup effort, repeatability, trust-building, and whether the work can grow beyond one-to-one labor.
No representative study establishes a typical monthly income for data scientists doing side work part-time. Treat platform figures as reference points, not a forecast for your circumstances.
How to start without building a second full-time job
- Choose a problem you can credibly solve. Identify a business question where you have demonstrable expertise and can explain why the outcome matters.
- Define a small deliverable. Specify the output, timeline, required inputs, revisions, and exclusions before agreeing to a price.
- Show proof safely. Prepare a short case study using permitted, anonymized, or synthetic data. Do not disclose an employer’s confidential information.
- Test demand before investing heavily. Ask professional contacts, try a marketplace, or run a small paid workshop before spending substantial time on a full course or product.
- Track the real economics. Record revenue, fees, expenses, preparation, unpaid work, and delivery time so you can calculate your effective rate.
- Check your outside-work obligations. Review employment terms and conflict-of-interest rules before taking related work, especially if it involves similar data, code, clients, or industry contacts.
Tax and work-status considerations
For U.S. readers, the IRS says contractor status depends on the actual facts about control and independence; a platform’s label alone does not settle the issue. Independent-contractor earnings are subject to self-employment tax. Readers elsewhere should consult their local tax authority’s rules. IRS guidance on independent contractors.
