Redbox’s June 2024 shutdown left movie-rental kiosks at retail locations, but the cleanup has been handled by removal providers—not tracked in a verified public count. In November 2024, The Junkluggers described removing thousands of machines and rehoming recovered DVDs. CoolSys later said it had removed more than 4,700 kiosks by February 2025. Those dated company reports show how the work was being done; they do not establish how many kiosks remain today.
Why Redbox kiosks were left behind
Redbox shut down in June 2024. Its closure did not automatically remove the self-service DVD kiosks installed at grocery stores and other retail sites, leaving retailers with equipment that needed to be assessed, disconnected and taken away.
Hackaday’s November 19, 2024 account cited The Junkluggers Brand President Justin Waltz for an estimate of roughly 34,000 kiosks left standing after the shutdown. That was an attributed estimate reported in 2024, not a verified inventory or a count of machines still present in October 2026. Hackaday’s report does not establish a current nationwide total.
What the removal companies reported
Two providers described separate cleanup efforts at different dates. Their figures are company or interviewee claims, and the reports do not establish whether their work overlapped. They should not be added together to estimate the number removed.

| Provider and report date | Reported work | What the report establishes |
|---|---|---|
| The Junkluggers, reported by Hackaday on November 19, 2024 | Waltz said the company had removed thousands of units nationwide and completed a first phase at major retailers and grocery chains in less than three weeks. | An interviewee’s account of the company’s work; no exact removal total or independent audit was provided. |
| CoolSys, announced February 11, 2025 | The company said it had removed more than 4,700 kiosks nationwide to date and offered retailers site evaluation, removal, recycling and disposal services. | A dated company announcement, not an independently verified count or a measure of remaining kiosks. |
CoolSys’s February 2025 announcement, syndicated by Nasdaq, described a dedicated removal and recycling service. Its “more than 4,700” figure applies to the date of that announcement.
What happened to the machines and DVDs
Metal and reusable components
The Junkluggers told Hackaday that it evaluated kiosks because there were multiple types, recycled metal components and sought reuse or donation for parts. The report does not provide audited quantities for the materials recovered or parts reused.

Recovered discs
Waltz said collected DVDs were being rehomed to local artists and community organizations, including assisted-living facilities, homeless shelters and veterans’ clinics. These are destinations reported by the company; the account does not independently verify the number of discs or each donation.
Refrigeration and specialist handling
CoolSys said kiosks contained refrigeration systems intended to protect DVDs from temperature extremes. It identified safe refrigerant handling, alongside recycling electronics, metal and plastic, as a consideration in removal. That technical detail helps explain why the work can involve more than simply hauling away a cabinet; CoolSys’s announcement describes its service for retailers, not a universal method used by every provider.

How many Redbox kiosks are still standing?
The available reports do not answer that question for October 2026. The roughly 34,000 estimate was reported in November 2024, while the 4,700-plus removal figure was CoolSys’s company-reported total as of February 11, 2025. The Junkluggers separately reported removing “thousands,” without an exact total. Different dates, scopes and possible overlap make it unsound to subtract or combine these figures to calculate a current remainder.
Neither report says nationwide removal is complete. The grounded conclusion is that cleanup was underway through at least February 2025, with no verified current count established by these accounts.
