In-furrow application is moving beyond sending one product through a continuous stream. Planter systems can now place liquid inputs in multiple bands, pulse product around individual seeds, meter granular materials by row, and—in some systems—vary rates from a prescription while recording what was applied. The practical future is greater control over what goes down, where it lands and how delivery is checked, not a guaranteed yield increase.
What is changing in in-furrow application?
At planting, in-furrow equipment delivers an input into or near the seed furrow. The approach is used most prominently for starter fertilizer and phosphorus, and can also be used or considered for insecticides, fungicides, nematicides, inoculants and biological products. The right use depends on a diagnosed crop or field need, not simply on the availability of a planter attachment.
The main shift is from a single, relatively uniform application toward more choices in placement and control. A system may put product directly with the seed, in one or more adjacent bands, or in a pulse timed to seed placement. Granular systems can meter product by row. Prescription-based equipment can vary application across field zones, and monitoring can help identify delivery problems and document application.
These are equipment capabilities, not evidence that every field benefits from them. The technology cannot make an unsuitable product safe, correct poor planting conditions, or guarantee a profitable response.

What types of systems are available?
System names and specifications below describe the cited sources; they are not universal capabilities or confirmation of current model availability. Check manufacturer and dealer documentation for present models, planter compatibility and supported products.
| System type | Placement and delivery | Potential advantage | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Multi-band liquid placement | Science for Success describes Precision Planting FurrowJet as placing one band with the seed and two in the sidewall, about three-quarters of an inch from the seed. It can use up to three products. | Separating some fertilizer from the seed may reduce seedling-burn risk. The source says two-thirds of fertilizer is placed to the sides in this system. | Those dimensions and proportions describe this specific system, not a general safe-placement rule. Science for Success, Dec. 3, 2025. |
| Per-seed or pulsed liquid delivery | Science for Success describes SelectShot as applying a dose before or on each seed. AgXcel’s 360 Dash is described as pulsing product over the seed. | May help target expensive inputs more selectively. The cited review notes that the economics may be more attractive in lower-seeding-rate crops, but does not establish a universal return. | Confirm timing, rate control and fit with the planter and product. Science for Success, Dec. 3, 2025. |
| Granular metering | SmartBox+ and vDrive are cited examples of electrically controlled granular metering with row-level control and monitoring. | Can support controlled delivery of granular products and help detect differences among rows. | Calibration and maintenance remain necessary; verify current model compatibility. Science for Success, Dec. 3, 2025; Farm Progress / University of Georgia Extension, May 18, 2022. |
| Prescription-based, variable-rate application | A 2020 Successful Farming report described SIMPAS using agronomist-developed prescriptions and product RFID identification to control application and populate as-applied records. | Can connect field-zone decisions with product delivery and application records. | The report is historical; its projected 2021 commercial release is not evidence of current availability. Verify present specifications and availability with the manufacturer or dealer. Successful Farming, Aug. 31, 2020. |
How should you choose an in-furrow system?
Start with the field problem and the intended product, then compare equipment. A more elaborate system is not automatically a better agronomic or financial choice.
- Identify the target. Establish the crop or field limitation the input is meant to address. If the limitation is not present, precision delivery alone does not create a reason to apply.
- Check whether the product belongs in-furrow. Review its label and crop-specific guidance for rate, placement and restrictions. Account for crop sensitivity, soil texture, moisture and fertilizer chemistry.
- Choose placement and metering deliberately. Decide whether the product should be with the seed, in a separate band, or pulsed by seed; for granular products, confirm the metering system handles the product and intended rate.
- Check compatibility and planter integration. Confirm the system works with the planter, display and control setup, supports the required number of products, and can deliver the intended rate reliably.
- Plan calibration and monitoring. Determine how rates will be calibrated, how blockages or metering failures will be noticed, and whether row-level monitoring and as-applied records are available and useful for your operation.
- Compare cost with the specific opportunity. Weigh equipment and operating costs against the value of the input and the likely benefit on the targeted acres. The cited sources describe potential advantages but do not establish a general positive return on investment.
DTN’s 2023 report frames product selection around the 4R principles: right source, right rate, right time and right place. For in-furrow equipment, that means evaluating the agronomy and delivery together rather than treating the planter as a substitute for a field recommendation.

Can fertilizer, crop-protection products and biologicals be applied together?
Some systems support more than one product, but that does not mean every combination is compatible in the tank or safe in the furrow. Check each product label and compatibility guidance, and consult an agronomist before applying a proposed mix.
Compatibility is especially important with biologicals. DTN reported in 2023 that some biological products contain living microbes that may not tolerate fertilizer salt concentrations; placing products in separate bands can keep them apart. Jason Webster, a commercial agronomist at Precision Planting, told DTN: “When you’re delivering a live microbe to the soil, you want to make sure that it’s being placed in proximity to the seed and in an environment where it can thrive.” That is practitioner guidance, not a blanket compatibility rule. DTN, Jan. 31, 2023.
How can you reduce seed injury and application failures?
Protect seedlings from fertilizer injury
Fertilizer in direct contact with seed can cause salt injury; nitrogen can also contribute to ammonium toxicity. Safe rates depend on fertilizer chemistry, crop, soil texture, moisture and placement. A rate suitable for corn may be too high for soybean under the same conditions. Follow product labels and current crop-specific recommendations instead of transferring a rate from another crop or field.

- Quick, easy, and more precise way to spread granular herbicides, insecticides, and fertilizers
- Great for reaching under or around things
- Two sizes of orifice discs and a unique deflector plate control the flow of granules
- Holds 5 lbs
- Up to 3 feet of coverage
Kansas State University Research and Extension’s 2026 discussion concerns wheat specifically. It provides maximum direct-contact nitrogen plus K2O guidance by row spacing and soil texture, and cautions about seedling toxicity. Use the full current table and local guidance rather than treating an isolated rate as universal. In the wheat work described, the highest yields among the phosphorus rates discussed were observed at 120 lb/acre; this is not a general recommendation for other crops, fields or seed-contact situations. Kansas State University Agronomy eUpdates, Sept. 3, 2026.
Check delivery before and during planting
Blocked tubes or metering problems can leave rows or field areas without the intended treatment. Precision controls do not eliminate the need for setup and calibration: use the equipment’s procedures, verify actual delivery, and monitor for row-to-row differences. The University of Georgia Extension material published by Farm Progress discusses granular in-furrow systems in this context. Farm Progress / University of Georgia Extension, May 18, 2022.

What does the agronomic evidence say about results?
Results depend on the crop, product, field limitation and placement. Kansas State University reports that its research found in-furrow phosphorus consistently improved wheat yields compared with no fertilizer, with responses increasing with rate in the described work and similar responses across DAP and MESZ. That finding belongs to the wheat research and its safety guidance; it is not a prediction for another crop or farm.
Science for Success’ 2025 planter-technology review says fungicide applied with fertilizer in-furrow can increase yields in some high-disease environments, while average increases tend to be small. The review summarizes an opportunity, not a guaranteed response or a universal estimate. Science for Success, Dec. 3, 2025.
DTN quoted Jason Webster estimating a 25% to 30% efficiency difference when dry fertilizer is moved from broadcast application to an in-furrow band, while discussing reducing and reallocating rates. This is an estimate attributed to a commercial agronomist at Precision Planting, not an independent universal trial result. DTN, Jan. 31, 2023.

What is the practical future?
The documented direction is toward more targeted placement, more flexible metering and better application information: multiple liquid bands, per-seed or pulsed delivery, granular flow control, prescription-based rates and as-applied records. These features may help manage costly inputs or field variability when an agronomic need has been identified. They do not establish a universal yield response, adoption forecast or return on investment, and the source set is focused mainly on U.S. row-crop systems.
For a grower, the useful question is not whether precision in-furrow application is the future in the abstract. It is whether a particular product, placement and control method solves a defined field problem safely, reliably and at a cost that makes sense.
