Efood is best understood here as a connected digital dining workflow—not one app or a standardized industry term. It can take a customer from browsing a menu and customizing a meal through checkout, payment, fulfillment updates, and support, while restaurant-side tools manage menus, availability, prices, and orders. For diners, the practical test is whether the experience is convenient and the final cost is clear; for restaurants, it is whether the tools fit the service they provide.

What does “efood” mean?

A 2026 technical overview published under the title “The Future of Dining: Embracing Efood” uses the term for digital ordering and the connected systems that support it. That is a useful description, not an official or universally standardized definition. In practice, the workflow includes both the customer-facing steps—menu browsing, customization, checkout, payment, order tracking, and support—and restaurant-side work such as keeping menus, prices, and item availability current. Read the 2026 overview.

Thinking of efood as a workflow helps explain why an attractive app is not enough. A digital order still depends on accurate information, a successful payment, a clear handoff to pickup or delivery, and a way to resolve problems.

How do digital food-ordering options differ?

Three common models put different responsibilities on the restaurant, the ordering service, and the diner. The precise arrangement varies by restaurant and platform.

Model How it works What to compare
Restaurant-owned website or app The restaurant presents its own menu and accepts orders through a digital channel. Whether menu details and prices are current; how payment works; who handles pickup or delivery; and the final checkout total. UK survey evidence distinguishes ordering through a restaurant, takeaway, or café website from using an ordering-and-delivery company. Food and You 2, Wave 9.
Third-party delivery marketplace A service lists multiple restaurants and coordinates orders and delivery. Restaurant coverage, fees and any menu-price differences, who fulfills the delivery, which party handles support, and how the restaurant relates to the platform. A 2023 peer-reviewed article discusses delivery and pickup partnerships, but its examples are not a current vendor ranking. 2023 food-service employment study.
Table-side QR code or tablet Diners browse, order, or pay digitally while at a restaurant or venue. Whether it is easy to use, how staff fit into the handoff, what payment options are available, and whether the process suits the venue’s service style. Vendors describe QR-based live menus and ordering, but vendor descriptions do not establish independent effectiveness. Foodeez’s description; me&u’s description.

What does the evidence say about customer use?

The available figures point to interest and past use, but they measure different populations and behaviors; they should not be combined into a single adoption rate.

  • United States: In 2024, the National Restaurant Association reported that 7 in 10 limited-service customers said they would be likely to order using a smartphone app, as did 8 in 10 delivery customers. These are stated intentions, not counts of completed orders. The association also reported that 76% of restaurant operators said technology gave them a competitive edge. National Restaurant Association, 2024.
  • United Kingdom: In Food Standards Agency Food and You 2 Wave 9, 60% of surveyed respondents said they had ever ordered from a restaurant, takeaway, or café website, while 55% said they had ever ordered through an online ordering and delivery company. Among respondents who had ordered through such a company, one fifth said they did so about once a week or more often. “Ever ordered” does not mean regular or daily use. Food and You 2, Wave 9.

The National Restaurant Association’s findings also emphasize that customers value easier and faster ordering and payment, rather than technology for its own sake. Its 2024 research reports differences among full-service, limited-service, and delivery customers, so a digital feature that helps one type of restaurant may be a poor fit for another. National Restaurant Association, 2024.

How can diners compare the real cost?

Do not assume that ordering directly is always cheaper, or that every marketplace has the same fees. The total can depend on the listed food prices, mandatory fees, delivery arrangements, and whether a discount applies to the order. A fair comparison uses the same meal, location, and time and checks the amount due at checkout.

  1. Compare the menu prices with the restaurant’s in-person prices if that information is available.
  2. Check the checkout screen for the full total and identify which fees are mandatory, what they are for, and when they are charged.
  3. Read promotion conditions, including any restrictions that affect whether a discount applies to your order.
  4. Before placing the order, confirm the restaurant, items, pickup or delivery method, address, and final amount.

In April 2026, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission invited public comment on whether a rule was needed for online food and grocery delivery fees and pricing practices. The issues included total-price clarity, fee purpose and timing, variable fees, online-versus-in-store price differences, individualized pricing, discount conditions, and unauthorized billing. That action began a public-comment and proposed-rulemaking process; it was not a final rule. It does not establish what every service charges, and requirements may differ by jurisdiction. What needs to work behind the screen?

A dependable digital order relies on several linked steps. If one fails, convenience can quickly turn into confusion for both the diner and the restaurant.

  • Menu and availability: The displayed items, customizations, and prices need to reflect what the restaurant can actually provide. An unavailable item or unexpected price change can undermine trust.
  • Checkout and payment: The customer should be able to review the order and total before paying, and the system should make payment status understandable.
  • Order status and handoff: The restaurant and customer need a workable way to coordinate preparation, pickup, or courier collection. The customer should know what to do if an order is late or the handoff is unclear.
  • Support and resolution: When an item is missing, an order is incorrect, or payment is disputed, it should be apparent which party to contact and how refunds or corrections are handled.

These are practical implementation considerations, not proof that digital ordering automatically increases sales, cuts labor, or improves restaurant economics. The outcome depends on how the tools and responsibilities are arranged.

What does efood mean for restaurant work?

Digital dining is also an operating and labor issue. A 2023 peer-reviewed article on U.S. food-service employment discusses delivery and pickup partnerships alongside workforce turnover, pay, working conditions, and ghost kitchens. It highlights questions about partnership terms, sanitation, social responsibility, environmental effects, and consumer attitudes; it is useful context, not a current measure of employment or delivery adoption. 2023 food-service employment study.

The important questions are concrete: who handles preparation and fulfillment, how the restaurant and ordering platform divide customer support, what the diner pays, and whether the digital process preserves the quality of service the venue intends to offer. Ordering trends, employment patterns, and technology use do not by themselves show that any one caused another.

When is digital ordering a good fit?

The best setup is the one that supports the service rather than adding steps without solving a real problem. The National Restaurant Association’s 2024 U.S. findings show that stated interest varies by customer type, while vendor descriptions show that table-side systems can be designed for ordering and payment within a venue. Neither establishes that one approach suits every restaurant. National Restaurant Association, 2024; me&u.

Quick Recap

  • For diners: Choose the channel that makes the order, total, fulfillment method, and help route easiest to understand.
  • For restaurants: Consider whether the channel keeps menu and availability information accurate, integrates with existing order handling, and makes payment and handoffs manageable.
  • For table-side use: A QR sign or table tent can provide a physical way into a live menu, but it is an optional implementation detail—not a substitute for an accessible, usable ordering and payment flow. Foodeez’s QR-ordering description.
