How steep was the second-weekend drop?
The Associated Press reported that The Fantastic Four: First Steps earned $40 million in North America over August 1–3, 2025, from 4,125 theaters. That was a 66% decline from its $117.6 million North American opening weekend, yet the film remained first at the box office. The Associated Press’ August 3 report also noted that Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian found the drop surprising given the film’s strong reviews.

The Numbers’ chart for the same August 1–3 weekend recorded $38,695,752, a 67% decline, and a cumulative domestic gross of $197,123,387. Those are The Numbers’ chart figures, not a correction to AP’s rounded report; the sources report slightly different weekend grosses and percentage drops. The Numbers’ weekend domestic chart provides the alternate estimate.
What was competing for moviegoers?
The Numbers ranked two new comedies behind First Steps on its August 1–3 domestic chart. The Bad Guys 2 grossed $21,995,715, and The Naked Gun grossed $16,805,560. AP rounded those totals to $22 million and $17 million, respectively. Their presence provides context for the weekend’s chart, but the reporting does not establish that either release caused the Fantastic Four film’s decline.

How did the drop compare with the opening?
The film began with a strong launch. Disney reported an opening weekend of $118 million domestically and $100 million internationally, or $218 million combined, for July 25–27, 2025. AP separately described a $117.6 million North American debut. The figures are reported by different sources and are differently rounded; Disney’s combined figure includes international box office, while AP’s cited debut is North American. Where did the film stand later in its run?
By August 15–17, the film was fourth on Box Office Mojo’s domestic weekend chart. The chart listed $9,030,672 for that weekend, down 42.8%, and a cumulative domestic gross of $247,268,221. Weapons, Freakier Friday, and Nobody 2 ranked above it. These later figures show the film’s chart position and weekend gross at that point in its theatrical run; they do not explain why its audience changed. What the numbers do—and do not—show
A 66% or 67% second-weekend decline is steep, especially after a major opening, but it is not the same as losing the top spot: First Steps remained No. 1 for August 1–3. New releases shared the chart, while the reported sources do not isolate competition as the cause of the decline. Dergarabedian told AP, “It’s a tough lift, but we might be able to get there. It really means that all the films are gonna have to stand on their own,” adding that reviews and staying power matter.
