The F-150 Lightning Is Ending in Its Current Form—But Ford Plans an EREV Successor

Ford has ended production of the battery-electric F-150 Lightning, but plans an EREV successor. Here’s what Ford has said about timing, current owners, and the costs of its wider EV reset.

Ford has ended production of the all-electric F-150 Lightning in its current form, but it has not announced the end of the Lightning nameplate. Under the EV strategy reset Ford announced on December 15, 2025, the planned next-generation truck will be an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV), with electric drive and a generator to extend range. Ford has not announced when it will be available.

Is Ford discontinuing or cancelling the F-150 Lightning?

Ford has concluded production of the current battery-electric generation, and its U.S. product page says it is no longer available to order in its current form. In that sense, the current Lightning is a casualty of Ford’s reset. But saying Ford has cancelled the Lightning without mentioning the planned successor would be misleading: Ford says it is transforming the truck into an EREV.

Ford’s announcement described the Lightning as a product that demonstrated an electric pickup could still be a great F-Series truck. The company has not said the next version will retain every feature, specification, or price of the current one.

What will replace the all-electric Lightning?

Ford says the next-generation F-150 Lightning will use extended-range electric vehicle architecture. The planned truck would deliver power through electric drive, with a generator-backed system intended to extend its range. It is not the same setup as the current battery-electric model, which relies on charging its battery rather than an onboard generator.

  • Compact Size: Measuring approximately 3 inches in length, this 1:64 scale model is a perfect desktop display or addition to any collection.
  • Authentic Branding: Officially licensed by Ford, this model showcases the automaker's branding and emblem for an authentic representation.

In its December 2025 announcement, Ford estimated that the future EREV would have more than 700 miles of range and accelerate from zero to 60 mph in under five seconds. Those are Ford’s estimates for a future product, not independently verified test results or confirmed final production specifications. Ford has not announced a final price or full specifications.

When will the new F-150 Lightning come out?

Ford has not announced a specific availability date for the EREV Lightning. Its announcement said the planned truck would be assembled at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn, Michigan, but a plant plan is not a confirmed launch date. Ford’s other timing targets in the same announcement—including a planned midsize electric pickup beginning assembly in Louisville in 2027—do not establish when the Lightning successor will arrive.

What does Ford’s EV reset mean for buyers?

If you need a truck now, the planned EREV is a future option with no announced availability date, not a vehicle you can order today. The practical choice is between an available gas or hybrid F-150 and a used current-generation Lightning, depending on your needs and local inventory.

Path Availability Power and use What to weigh
Used current-generation Lightning Potentially available through used-vehicle sellers; availability and price depend on local listings. Battery-electric. Charging access and trip planning matter, particularly for regular towing or long-distance driving. Check the specific vehicle’s condition, model-year warranty terms, configuration, and charging needs before buying.
Current gas or hybrid F-150 Current alternatives; availability, configuration, and price vary by dealer and location. Gas or hybrid operation, depending on the version. Choose based on towing, driving, and refueling needs. Compare the exact truck’s purchase price, operating costs, equipment, and warranty with the used EV option.
Planned EREV Lightning Announced future product; Ford has not given a specific availability date. Ford says it will combine electric drive with generator-backed extended range. Final price, specifications, and launch timing have not been announced. Waiting means accepting that uncertainty.

Prices, incentives, and used inventory change by location and time; the cited Ford announcements do not establish current local offers. Compare actual listings and quotes rather than assuming the successor will cost more or less than a current truck.

A decision framework

  • Choose based on immediacy: If you need a truck before Ford announces and delivers the successor, compare vehicles available now.
  • Match the powertrain to your routine: For a used Lightning, consider home or public charging access and how towing affects your range and stops. For an EREV, wait for Ford’s final operating details before assuming how it will fit your trips.
  • Compare the actual financial commitment: Include the specific vehicle’s price, financing, insurance, warranty, and any incentives that apply where you live. No final successor price is available to compare.

Will Ford still support current Lightning owners?

Ford says support for existing owners remains unchanged. Its owner page says software updates and connected services will continue and replacement parts will remain available. That is Ford’s stated support position; it does not mean every part or service is immediately available at every dealer.

Ford lists high-voltage battery component coverage of eight years or 100,000 miles and describes a 70% capacity threshold during the applicable warranty period. Coverage conditions and separate powertrain and bumper-to-bumper terms depend on the applicable warranty guide. Check the guide and ask a Ford dealer to confirm the terms for your vehicle’s model year and jurisdiction.

How much is Ford’s EV reset costing?

Ford’s December 15, 2025 announcement estimated about $19.5 billion in special items associated with its strategic reset, with most expected in the fourth quarter of 2025 and the remainder in 2026–2027. Ford also estimated about $5.5 billion in cash effects associated with those announced special items. These are company-reported estimates for the broader reset, not a disclosed cost attributable solely to ending Lightning production.

In its Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, Ford reported $481 million in cash-payable second-quarter charges primarily tied to contractual commitments from EV programs. Ford said further related pre-tax expenses and cash expenditures could be up to $2 billion. The filing also describes the May 2026 closing of BlueOval SK joint-venture disposition transactions and associated battery-plant arrangements; those transactions should not be conflated with the specific cost of cancelling or ending Lightning production.

Where the Lightning fits in Ford’s broader plan

Ford’s reset shifts emphasis across gas vehicles, hybrids, lower-cost EVs, and EREVs. The company said it expected hybrids, EREVs, and fully electric vehicles together to account for about 50% of its global volume by 2030, compared with 17% in 2025. These are Ford’s expectations, not achieved results.

The same announcement outlined other program changes, including a lower-cost Universal EV Platform whose first planned vehicle was a midsize electric pickup intended for assembly in Louisville beginning in 2027. Ford also said it would redirect its Tennessee EV plant toward affordable gas trucks and replace a planned North American electric commercial van with gas and hybrid models. These changes show the breadth of the reset, but they do not supply a launch date for the EREV Lightning.

Ford’s December 2025 announcement is available in its SEC filing. The later financial update appears in Ford’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026. Current owner and warranty information is on Ford’s F-150 Lightning page and should be checked alongside the applicable warranty guide.
