The Evolution of Funeral Home Marketing: From Community Relationships to Digital Information

Trade-journal analysis and FTC website findings show how funeral-home marketing has adapted to market change, community engagement, and digital information—with price transparency still uneven.

Funeral-home marketing has had to adapt as economic conditions and cultural expectations change. A study of trade-journal coverage from 2008 to 2015 found two recurring themes: adapting business assets to market changes and engaging with the community to build goodwill and loyalty. In the digital era, a 2022 Federal Trade Commission review found that funeral-provider websites commonly supplied contact details and service information, while fewer than half of the sampled sites displayed any prices.

How funeral-home marketing responds to change

The available evidence supports a focused view of change, not a complete chronology of funeral-home promotion across every decade or medium. Virginia R. Beard and William C. Burger analyzed articles published in American Funeral Director from 2008 through 2015. They identified two broad marketing approaches: adapting funeral-home assets to market changes, and engaging with communities in ways intended to build goodwill, usage, and loyalty.

Those are themes in trade-journal material, not proof that every funeral home followed the same approach or achieved the same results. The study nevertheless illustrates a central tension in the business: providers must respond to changing markets while maintaining relationships with the communities they serve.

What shifted online

A 2022 FTC staff review offers a snapshot of how funeral providers used their websites. Staff identified 187 provider websites from 58 areas across 34 states and Puerto Rico. Most reviewed sites displayed basic contact information and online obituaries or details about upcoming funeral, memorial, or graveside services. Some also offered grief resources, veterans’ burial information, or pre-need planning details.

The sample shows that online presence and online price transparency are different things. The FTC’s report found that less than half of the websites supplied any prices. About 24 percent included an itemized price list or General Price List; approximately 11 percent offered only starting prices or package information; and about 4 percent provided only casket or alternative-container prices. These percentages describe the review’s sample, not all providers or the current market.

Websites, social accounts, and business profiles

At an FTC workshop in September 2023, participants discussed provider websites, social accounts, Google business pages, and online obituary and service publishing. Their comments show that industry participants see different roles for these channels: a provider website can collect practical information in one place, while social or business-profile pages may help people find a provider or encounter updates. The transcript records participant discussion, not binding FTC guidance or evidence that one channel produces better results.

For families comparing arrangements, the most useful digital information is often straightforward: how to contact and locate a provider, what services are scheduled, what goods and services are offered, and what they cost. The FTC’s 2022 review found uneven detail across sites, particularly on prices. It did not measure marketing effectiveness, conversions, or industry-wide spending.

Price transparency and the Funeral Rule

The FTC’s Funeral Rule has applied since 1984 and has been revised since then. FTC staff guidance describes requirements for accurate, itemized price information and disclosures in specified circumstances, including the General Price List and arrangements made before or at the time of need. The staff guidance explains its view of compliance; it does not itself amend or modify the Rule.

The distinction matters: the 2022 website review found that relatively few sampled providers posted prices, but that finding does not establish that federal law universally required funeral homes to publish prices online. The Rule’s requirements and the question of website publication are not interchangeable. Providers and consumers should consult current FTC guidance and applicable state requirements for a particular transaction.

The FTC’s October 2022 announcement said fewer than 40 percent of the reviewed websites offered any prices online and described the Commission’s consideration of possible Funeral Rule modernization. FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Samuel Levine said, “For decades, the Funeral Rule has provided crucial rights to grieving families seeking out burial and cremation services.” That statement reflects the importance of disclosure rights; it does not change the scope of a specific legal requirement.

What families should look for when comparing providers

The FTC frames the consumer’s practical questions as: “What kind of funeral should it be? What funeral provider should be used?” and “And what is it going to cost?” A website can help with an initial comparison, but families should check what is actually disclosed and ask the provider for the information needed to make an informed choice.

  • Confirm the basics: Check the location, contact details, and whether the site lists the relevant funeral or memorial service information.
  • Look for itemized prices: Distinguish an itemized price list from a starting price, package offer, or limited product price. If prices are not online, ask the provider how to obtain the applicable price information.
  • Compare like with like: Identify the services and goods being considered, then compare the corresponding charges rather than relying on a headline package or starting figure alone.
  • Verify details directly: Online listings and social posts may be useful starting points, but confirm current arrangements and prices with the provider.

What the evidence can—and cannot—show

The published evidence points to an evolution in emphasis: trade-journal analysis identified adaptation and community engagement as marketing themes, while the FTC’s sampled website review documented the growing practical role of online service information and a notable gap in posted prices. The 2023 workshop adds a record of participant discussion about websites and other digital channels.

These sources do not provide a full history of funeral-home marketing from early local advertising to the present, nor do they establish which marketing channel performs best. The website figures are a 2022 sample, the trade-journal study covers selected articles from 2008–2015, and workshop comments are discussion rather than policy. Together, they support a useful conclusion: digital channels can make essential information easier to find, but families still need clear, comparable price information to evaluate arrangements.
