United MileagePlus has four published Premier tiers: Silver, Gold, Platinum and 1K. For the 2026 qualification year, The Points Guy reports that members can qualify through a Premier qualifying points (PQP)-only route or a combined PQP-and-Premier qualifying flights (PQF) route. The thresholds are year-specific; check United’s current qualification table before planning, because requirements and benefits can change.
How United Premier status qualification works
Premier status is earned through qualifying activity in a calendar year. The two measures are PQP and PQF: members can meet the PQP-only target or reach the lower PQP target together with the required number of PQF. The 2026 targets below are reported by The Points Guy; United’s qualification page could not be verified in the available view, so these figures should not be treated as 2027 requirements.
United also advertises limited status-preview challenges with their own targets. For example, one offer specifies 1,600 PQP plus 5 PQF, or 1,800 PQP alone, during the challenge. Those are offer-specific conditions, not the standard annual thresholds.
2026 qualification targets by tier
| Premier tier | PQP-only route | Combined PQP + PQF route |
|---|---|---|
| Silver | 6,000 PQP | 5,000 PQP + 15 PQF |
| Gold | 12,000 PQP | 10,000 PQP + 30 PQF |
| Platinum | 18,000 PQP | 15,000 PQP + 45 PQF |
| 1K | 28,000 PQP | 22,000 PQP + 60 PQF |
These 2026 figures are reported by The Points Guy. They show how much qualifying activity separates tiers, but not whether a higher tier is worthwhile for a particular traveler; that depends on actual fares, routes and expected use of benefits.

Cruise promotions are not core flight benefits
United Cruises promotes onboard extras for Premier members on qualifying Norwegian, Oceania and Regent Seven Seas bookings. The offer is subject to conditions including a qualifying new booking, status validation, booking deadlines and availability. It is an ancillary promotion, not a guaranteed benefit attached to every tier; review the United Cruises offer terms.
How cards fit in—and what they do not establish
United says award-mile earnings on United and United Express flights depend on ticket price, Premier status and whether the traveler has an eligible United card. That means eligible cardholding can affect award-mile earning, but it does not establish that a particular card is the best way to earn Premier status. Card-related award miles and annual status qualification are separate questions; confirm current card-specific PQP rules and terms before counting on them.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing a qualification route
Use the 2026 table to compare the two paths against the travel you expect to take: the PQP-only path avoids a PQF minimum, while the combined path sets a lower PQP target but requires the listed flight count. Because the targets apply to a specific qualification year, confirm the live United table and any applicable exceptions before making fare or travel decisions.
