A U.S. personal check identifies who is paying, who should receive the money, and how much is being paid. To read one, check the payee and both amount fields, look for the payer’s signature, and use the printed number at the bottom to identify the bank and account. Check designs vary, so treat field locations as typical rather than universal.

What are the different parts of a check?

Most U.S. personal checks have fields on the front for the payer, date, payee, payment amount, memo, and signature. The bottom line contains machine-readable banking details. The layout can differ by bank and check design.

Account holder and bank information

Preprinted information identifies the account holder and the financial institution. It helps show who wrote the check and which institution the check is drawn on. The information’s placement varies by design. Chase explains the common check fields and their purposes.

Check number

The check number is a reference for identifying an individual check in your records. It is distinct from the routing and account numbers. A check number is often printed near the upper right, and it also appears in the machine-readable line at the bottom. The Federal Reserve’s Check 21 FAQ describes the information in that bottom line.

Date

The date is usually written near the upper right. It helps identify when the check was written, but do not assume that a date by itself determines whether or when a bank will accept or process a check; handling can depend on the circumstances and the institution. PNC describes where the date is commonly written.

Payee line

The “Pay to the order of” line names the person or organization intended to receive payment. Check that the name is the one you expect before relying on the check. U.S. Bank explains the payee field.

Numeric and written amounts

A check usually shows the payment amount twice: as a number and in words. Compare the two fields. If they differ, ask the bank how it handles the discrepancy rather than assuming which amount controls. PNC and U.S. Bank describe the two amount fields.

Memo line

The memo line is an optional note about the payment’s purpose, such as a bill or invoice reference. It can help with recordkeeping but is not the payee or amount field. Chase and PNC describe the memo line.

Signature line

The payer signs on the front to authorize the check. Do not sign a blank check: Chase warns that a signed blank check gives the payee room to fill in an amount.

MICR line at the bottom

The numbers along the bottom are printed in a machine-readable format called the magnetic ink character recognition line, or MICR line. The Federal Reserve Board’s Check 21 FAQ states: “This information is known as the check’s magnetic ink character recognition line, or MICR line, and contains information such as the routing number of the bank on which the check is drawn, the account number on which the check is drawn, and the check serial number.” Read the Federal Reserve’s explanation of the MICR line.

How do I read a check?

  1. Identify the payer. Read the preprinted account-holder information and identify the financial institution.
  2. Check the date. Find the date, commonly near the upper right, and note it without assuming it alone determines bank processing.
  3. Read the payee. Find the “Pay to the order of” line and confirm who is meant to receive payment.
  4. Compare both amounts. Check that the numeric amount and written amount match. If they do not, contact the bank about how to proceed.
  5. Look for the payer’s signature. It belongs on the front of the check.
  6. Use the MICR line to distinguish banking numbers. The bottom line includes the routing number, account number, and check serial number. Do not confuse the check number printed near the top with the routing or account number.
  7. Check the back if depositing or receiving the check. Endorsement and mobile-deposit requirements come from the receiving bank.

What should I handle carefully?

  • Protect check images. The bottom line includes routing and account information, so avoid sharing a check image casually.
  • Do not sign a blank check. Fill in the payee and amount before signing.
  • Follow the receiving institution’s instructions. Endorsement and mobile-deposit directions may vary.
  • Allow for different layouts. Use the field labels and functions rather than assuming every check places them in exactly the same location.
