The data deluge is not just a huge pile of files: it is the accelerating flow of data from more sources, arriving more frequently and in greater variety. That growth can help people and organizations make better decisions, but data becomes useful only when it is relevant, interpreted carefully, and handled responsibly. For personal-finance readers, the key distinction is between data that can improve a service or decision and personal information collected without clear purpose or protection.
What does “data deluge” mean?
UN Global Pulse described the data deluge as the combination of faster, more frequent data flows and a rising number and variety of sources. Its 2012 paper noted that mobile and social services contribute both real-time streams and behavioral traces. In other words, the challenge is about volume, velocity, and variety—not simply how much storage is available.
Data may be created deliberately, such as when someone fills out a form, or as a by-product of ordinary activity. The World Bank Group’s 2019 report discusses both kinds of data and their potential uses in public services, policy, and identifying patterns. What matters is whether the information helps answer a meaningful question.
How large is the data deluge?
Frequently repeated figures are historical estimates or forecasts, not current totals. UN Global Pulse’s 2012 paper said estimated available digital data globally rose from 150 exabytes in 2005 to 1,200 exabytes in 2010. The same paper projected a 44-fold increase in the data stock from 2007 to 2020, with the stock doubling every 20 months. That was a projection made in 2012; it should not be read as a measurement of what happened by 2020.

The World Bank Group’s 2019 report offered a snapshot for one second in July 2018: approximately 2.7 million emails sent and received, 74,860 YouTube videos watched, and 59,879 gigabytes of internet traffic carried. Those figures describe that dated snapshot, not activity today. The report also cited a Cisco forecast that monthly global internet traffic would reach about 200 exabytes by 2020, or 127 times its 2005 volume; this was a forecast quoted by the World Bank, not a verified outcome.
These examples illustrate why the phrase caught on, but they do not establish a current global data total or present-day growth rate. The available cited figures are dated, and extrapolating them would give a false impression of precision.

Why can more data be valuable?
When it is fit for its purpose, data can reveal patterns that are difficult to see from isolated observations. The World Bank Group describes possible benefits for public-service delivery and policy, as well as for firms analyzing information produced intentionally or incidentally through everyday activity. In personal finance, the same general principle applies: information can support a decision or service only if it is relevant, sufficiently reliable, and used in a way that respects the people it describes.
More information is not automatically better information. A larger dataset may contain irrelevant, incomplete, duplicated, or misleading material. Patterns also need interpretation: an apparent relationship is not, by itself, proof that one factor caused another. The useful question is not “How much data can be collected?” but “What decision or discovery is this data meant to improve, and is the evidence adequate for that job?”

What are the risks of collecting more data?
Personal data can create value for public and private purposes, but that value depends on protective frameworks. The World Bank Group highlights privacy and data protection as essential considerations; collection or open sharing should not be treated as beneficial by default. Sensitive information, unclear ownership, overly broad access, or reuse beyond the original purpose can create risks for the people represented in the data.
There are practical trade-offs, too. Information that is collected quickly may not yet be checked for accuracy, while careful validation can take time. The World Bank notes this tension between timeliness and accuracy in statistical work. Data that cannot be interpreted, documented, or maintained may be difficult to reuse even if it was expensive to gather.

How does data become useful?
An OECD-hosted 2017 background paper describes a workflow that starts with discovery and collection, then moves through analysis and visualization. Discovery itself can involve questions of sensitivity, privacy, and ownership; communicating results is also part of the work. For institutions, researchers, or anyone assessing how data is handled, the following checks help distinguish a useful data practice from collection for its own sake:
- Purpose: Identify the decision, discovery, or service the data is intended to improve.
- Quality and interpretation: Check whether the information is relevant and suitable for the analysis, and whether conclusions withstand scrutiny.
- Timeliness and scale: Consider how much arrives, how quickly it changes, and whether a real-time answer is genuinely needed.
- Privacy, ownership, and access: Determine whether personal or sensitive information is involved and what safeguards and sharing rules apply.
- Curation and reuse: Consider whether the data is documented, preserved, and usable by others. A 2012 Nature Cell Biology editorial summarizing the Royal Society’s open-science recommendations emphasized accessibility, curation, and dissemination.
This is why a larger storage device is not a general solution to the data deluge. The challenge is institutional as well as technical: making sound choices about what to collect, how to interpret it, who may use it, and how it will be protected and maintained.

Why the meaning can vary by field
“Data deluge” is also used in discipline-specific ways. A. H. Bevan’s 2015 archaeology article, for example, discusses the consequences of new digital, spatial, open, and remotely sensed evidence for archaeological analysis. That is one example of the broader pattern: new sources and methods change what evidence is available, but each field still has to decide how to assess and manage it.
