The Crypto Merchant was not shown to have a formal role in FTX’s bankruptcy. A TechTimes profile published August 11, 2023, identifies Mark Venables as the company’s founder and presents its cold-wallet business as a self-custody option for people wary of centralized exchanges. “Unsung hero” is the profile’s promotional framing—not evidence that the company handled FTX customer assets or rescued funds.
What the FTX profile says about The Crypto Merchant
TechTimes’s August 11, 2023 profile names Mark Venables as founder of The Crypto Merchant and characterizes the business as specializing in cold wallets. It connects the 2022 FTX collapse with renewed attention to self-custody, describing the company’s product range as cold wallets. The retrieved profile does not identify specific wallet models.
The article attributes views about security, user control, and education to Venables. It quotes him saying, “Cold wallets aren’t just about security. They are about peace of mind.” The quote reflects his perspective; it is not independent evidence that a particular wallet or custody setup guarantees safety. Read the TechTimes profile.
Was the company involved in FTX’s bankruptcy?
The available profile does not establish that The Crypto Merchant participated in FTX’s bankruptcy, held assets for FTX customers, or helped recover funds. Venables is also quoted as saying, “FTX’s downfall wasn’t just a failure of one company, but a reminder to all of us in the crypto industry of our collective responsibility.” That is an attributed opinion, not proof of a company role in the bankruptcy.

What cold wallets can—and cannot—do after an exchange failure
A hardware wallet is one way to hold cryptocurrency in self-custody: instead of relying on an exchange to control the private keys, the wallet’s owner takes responsibility for them. That can reduce dependence on an exchange’s solvency for assets already moved into self-custody. It cannot recover assets that remain trapped at an insolvent exchange, and it does not remove the risks of theft, losing recovery information, or making an operational mistake.
Choosing a device is only one part of custody. A user also needs to understand who controls the keys, how backups and recovery work, which assets are supported, and whether they can safely operate the setup. The TechTimes profile supports the product category, but it does not establish current inventory, name models, or compare brands. Hardware alone is not a guarantee of safe custody.

The headline’s hero language should be read as the profile’s characterization of The Crypto Merchant’s advocacy for cold wallets, not as a finding about FTX’s bankruptcy or customer recoveries. The sources provide no verified statistic for funds protected, users helped, or the company’s measurable impact during the collapse. The narrow, supported takeaway is that the profile presents Venables and his company as advocates and sellers of cold-wallet products in a period when exchange custody drew heightened scrutiny.
