If “crown jewel” means the company with the strongest valuation and growth narrative, SpaceX is the leading answer. If it means Musk’s best-established public-market business, Tesla deserves that distinction. There is no official or permanent designation: the answer depends on what you value and on when and how each company is measured.
Why SpaceX leads on valuation
Forbes reported that SpaceX began trading on Nasdaq on June 12, 2026, at $150 per share, giving the company a market capitalization of nearly $2 trillion. That makes SpaceX the clearest choice if the crown jewel is defined by market value at that moment. Market capitalization is the value implied by a company’s public share price and shares outstanding; it changes as the share price moves. Forbes’s report should therefore be read as a dated snapshot, not a permanent ranking.
A different measure comes from Kingdom Holding Company. Its financial statements valued its SpaceX investment at SAR 16.76 billion (USD 4.47 billion) as of March 31, 2026. That is the carrying value of one investor’s stake, not the total market capitalization of SpaceX. Kingdom Holding also described a conditional valuation scenario, which should not be treated as directly comparable to a market capitalization: the figures refer to different dates and measurement methods. Kingdom Holding’s financial statements provide the dated investment figure.
What the valuation does—and does not—say
A very high market value reflects what investors are willing to pay for shares, including expectations about future performance. It does not by itself establish that a company is profitable, nor does it prove that anticipated growth will materialize.

Associated Press reported that SpaceX’s IPO filing showed revenue of $18.7 billion and an operating loss of $2.6 billion for the prior year. Those are filing figures as reported by AP, and the loss is an operating measure, not a statement of net income or cash flow. The numbers put the valuation in context: SpaceX’s scale and market expectations coexist with a reported operating loss. Associated Press’s coverage attributes the figures to the IPO filing.
Why Tesla remains a serious contender
Tesla has a different claim: it is a long-standing, publicly traded operating company whose vehicle business is directly reflected in its own corporate disclosures. Unlike SpaceX’s market capitalization figure cited above, Tesla’s case here is not a side-by-side valuation comparison; the evidence supports its importance as an established public company, not a claim that it is worth more.

Tesla’s corporate biography says Musk has been its CEO since October 2008 and a board member since April 2004. The same biography says he has served as SpaceX’s CEO, CTO and chairman since May 2002. Those roles show why both companies are central to his business portfolio, but leadership titles alone do not establish which company is more important or how much of either company Musk owns. Tesla’s biography of Elon Musk lists the roles and dates.
How closely are the companies linked?
The businesses are distinct, with different operations, ownership structures and valuation bases. One disclosed financial connection is Tesla’s approximately $2.00 billion acquisition of SpaceX shares, completed on March 12, 2026. That is evidence of a direct investment link; it does not make the two companies interchangeable or mean that Tesla’s shareholders own SpaceX directly. Tesla’s filing disclosed the completed acquisition.

On the most visible current valuation measure in the cited reporting, SpaceX is the crown jewel. That verdict is specific to valuation and the date reported—not a universal judgment about operating performance, public-market history or Musk’s priorities.
