Based on a September 2026 U.S. market comparison, the least expensive new car identified with a conventional clutch-operated manual transmission is the 2026 Mazda MX-5 Miata Sport. Its current price needs a check: Mazda’s January 2026 release lists a $30,430 MSRP, while a later comparison reports that the MSRP increased to $30,730 in September. Mazda lists a $1,315 destination charge, so those figures imply listed totals of $31,745 or $32,045 before taxes, title, registration, dealer charges, and options. Confirm the live price with Mazda or a local dealer before budgeting.

What is the cheapest new car with a manual transmission?

The leading option in the cited U.S. comparison is the 2026 Mazda MX-5 Miata Sport with its six-speed manual. Mazda’s January 27, 2026 pricing release lists a $30,430 MSRP. It also lists a $1,315 destination and handling charge effective August 11, 2026. A September 26, 2026 comparison, however, reports that the Sport’s MSRP rose to $30,730 on September 15. Because those base prices conflict, treat the totals below as calculations from the two reported MSRPs—not as a confirmed live quote.

Price basis MSRP Destination MSRP plus destination
Mazda’s January 27, 2026 release $30,430 $1,315 $31,745
September 26, 2026 secondary comparison reporting a September 15 increase $30,730 $1,315 $32,045

The first MSRP and destination charge are listed in Mazda’s official release; the later MSRP is reported by OctaneDaily’s September 2026 comparison. These totals exclude taxes, title, registration, dealer charges, and optional equipment. The sources do not establish an out-the-door price, and the secondary report does not resolve the conflict with Mazda’s release. Check Mazda’s current U.S. configurator and get a written dealer quote for the exact car.

What kind of car do you get for the lowest price?

The Miata is a two-seat roadster, not a typical four-door commuter car. Its low entry price among new manual cars comes with a clear compromise: it seats two, so it may not work for a household that needs back seats or a sedan’s everyday flexibility.

Mazda says the 2026 MX-5 Miata’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder produces 181 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 151 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm, with a 7,500 rpm redline. Listed safety features include blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, Smart Brake Support, lane-departure warning, driver-attention alert, vehicle-exit warning, and secondary-collision reduction. Those specifications do not establish real-world fuel economy, cargo capacity, reliability, or comparative safety scores.

How does it compare with nearby-priced manual alternatives?

The September 2026 comparison identifies two alternatives for shoppers whose needs differ from the Miata’s two-seat roadster layout. The prices below are reported by that secondary comparison, not independently confirmed current quotes.

Model Reported MSRP Destination Reported price plus destination What to check
2026 Mazda MX-5 Miata Sport 6MT $30,430 in Mazda’s January release; $30,730 after a September increase reported by OctaneDaily $1,315 in Mazda’s release $31,745 or $32,045, depending on which MSRP is current Confirm Mazda’s live MSRP and dealer charges; two seats may not meet your needs.
2027 Toyota GR86 Base $31,500 $1,295 $32,795 Confirm current Toyota pricing and local availability.
2026 Honda Civic Si $31,495 $1,295 $32,790 The comparison says this manual-only trim is paused after model year 2026; confirm whether one can still be ordered.

The GR86 is a nearby-priced manual sports coupe. The Civic Si may be more relevant if you need a sedan, but the cited comparison’s report about its model-year transition requires confirmation. The comparison does not establish that either alternative is available at those prices at every dealer or in every market.

How to compare the real cost before buying

MSRP is a starting point, not the amount you will necessarily pay. Compare written quotes for the same model year and equipment, and check the exact trim’s transmission rather than relying on a model name alone.

  1. Confirm the car can be ordered. Check the manufacturer’s current U.S. configurator and ask a local dealer about the model year, trim, and transmission. This matters especially for the Civic Si, whose future ordering status is uncertain in the cited comparison.
  2. Verify a clutch-operated manual. This comparison counts a driver-operated transmission with a clutch pedal. It does not count an automatic’s manual mode, a paddle-shift dual-clutch transmission, or an automated manual without a clutch pedal.
  3. Compare the same price components. Put MSRP, destination, optional equipment, dealer charges, and taxes and registration in separate lines. Do not treat MSRP plus destination as an out-the-door price.
  4. Match the body style to your needs. Consider whether a two-seat roadster, sports coupe, or sedan fits your passenger and cargo requirements before choosing on price alone.
  5. Get the offer in writing. Ask the dealer to identify required charges and installed options so you can compare the total for the actual vehicle, not just an advertised starting price.

What Mazda says about the Miata’s transmission

Mazda North American Operations said in its January 27, 2026 release: “A standard six-speed manual transmission remains at the heart of the MX-5 Miata driving experience.” Mazda identifies the Sport and Club as manual-only trims; the Grand Touring can be ordered with either a six-speed manual or an automatic. The Sport is the least expensive manual trim in the lineup described by that release.

For a broader sense of how many choices remain, CARFAX’s 2026 count says fewer than 30 U.S. models offer a manual transmission. That is a secondary-source market count, not a measure of sales or popularity.
