For U.S. domestic trips, Saturday was the cheapest day to book and Tuesday the cheapest day to depart. These are averages from Expedia bookings, not guarantees for a particular route or ticket.
Cheapest days to book versus cheapest days to fly
The day you purchase a ticket and the day you take the flight are separate decisions. Expedia’s 2026 Air Hacks announcement reports different weekday comparisons for each:
| Decision | Cheapest day in Expedia’s report | Reported comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Book any itinerary | Friday | Friday bookings were 3% cheaper than Sunday bookings. |
| Fly overall | Friday | Friday departures were up to 8% cheaper than Sunday departures. |
| Book a U.S. domestic itinerary | Saturday | Saturday bookings were 2% cheaper than Monday bookings. |
| Fly within the U.S. | Tuesday | Tuesday departures averaged 14% less than Sunday departures. |
Expedia also identifies Tuesday as the least busy day to fly and Friday as the busiest. That makes Tuesday a possible choice when both fare and crowd levels matter; Friday’s lower overall fare does not mean it will be the least crowded travel day.
How to use the weekday findings when planning a trip
- Choose dates that work for the trip first. A cheaper average weekday is useful only if it fits your schedule, route and available flights.
- Compare booking and departure days separately. If you can be flexible, check whether purchasing on Friday changes the fare and compare departure options on Friday or, for domestic travel, Tuesday.
- Compare the complete itinerary. Look at the total fare and schedule for your actual route and dates rather than assuming Expedia’s average will apply to your ticket.
- Balance price with crowding and convenience. Tuesday is Expedia’s reported least-busy day, while Friday is reported as busiest; the best choice depends on whether price, crowds or timing matters most to you.
Cheapest months to book and travel
Booking month and travel month are also different. Expedia reports July as the cheapest month to book, 18% cheaper than December. August is the cheapest month to fly overall: fares averaged 29% less than December, a difference Expedia describes as roughly $120 per ticket. For domestic flying, January was the cheapest month, averaging 19% less than December.

How far ahead to book
Expedia reports that U.S. domestic economy tickets booked 15–30 days before departure averaged $130 less than tickets booked more than six months ahead. Its report FAQ identifies 8–15 days before departure as the most affordable booking window for international economy.

What Expedia’s figures do—and do not—show
Expedia published its 2026 Air Hacks announcement on February 17, 2026. It says the average ticket pricing comparisons use bookings made on Expedia.com from December 2024 through November 2025, compared with December 2023 through November 2024, and describes the analysis as drawing on millions of Expedia data points. The findings are Expedia’s own booking data; the announcement does not establish that the same averages apply to other booking channels, every country or an individual route.

Expedia’s public-relations head Melanie Fish said: “Business travelers head home earlier in the week these days, so new opportunities are opening up for leisure travelers to save by choosing smarter travel days, like Friday for the best prices or Tuesday for fewer crowds.” This is Fish’s explanation of the pattern, not independently established evidence of why the prices or crowd levels differ.

Expedia recommends its Flight Deals feature in the app. Expedia says it scans flights from a selected airport and highlights fares at least 20% below the typical price it predicts for the route. Its report’s deal-volume data cover 2025 U.S. app activity. Treat the feature as Expedia’s own way to surface fares against its predicted typical price, not as an independent test or a guarantee that a highlighted fare is the best available.
