Calvin Klein began in New York in 1968 as a clothing company built around a restrained, minimalist design identity. It grew into a global fashion brand by extending that identity across categories such as underwear and denim, then became part of PVH after the parent company acquired it in 2003. PVH reported approximately $9 billion in global retail sales for Calvin Klein products in 2025—a brand sales figure, not PVH’s corporate revenue.
When was Calvin Klein founded?
Calvin Klein was founded in New York in 1968 by designer Calvin Klein and business partner Barry Schwartz, according to the brand’s official history. PVH, its current parent company, also identifies 1968 as the founding year in its brand overview.
The New York start matters to the story because the company’s identity was closely tied to the designer’s point of view: clothing with a clean, pared-back look rather than conspicuous decoration. The brand’s official history quotes Klein describing his aim as creating clothes “that were discreet in luxury, subtle in seduction, and devoid of decoration.” The page does not date the statement, so it is best understood as a summary of the design sensibility the brand associates with its founder, not as a dated launch slogan.
How did Calvin Klein turn minimalism into a recognizable identity?
Minimalism gave the company a consistent design idea it could carry from one kind of product to another. In PVH’s account, Calvin Klein is a “minimalist canvas for creative exploration,” while the brand’s own history emphasizes a balance of subtlety and sensuality. These are company descriptions of the brand’s intent, rather than an independent explanation of why every customer chose its products.

That distinction helps make sense of the growth story: a recognizable design identity can unify a range of products, but it does not by itself explain the brand’s full commercial success. The available company histories establish key milestones and categories; they do not provide a complete, independent account of the causes behind its rise.
Why were underwear and jeans important?
Designer underwear
Calvin Klein’s official history identifies the rise of designer underwear in the 1980s as a major development. The milestone is significant because it marks the brand’s reach beyond conventional apparel into a category where the designer name itself could be part of the product’s identity. The cited history does not establish an exact launch date or a complete chronology of the category, so neither should be inferred from the decade-level milestone.

Underwear remains one of the categories listed by the company today. A present-day Calvin Klein underwear offering belongs to the brand’s current range; the company history does not establish that contemporary products are identical to the styles sold in the 1980s.
Denim and a wider product range
Jeans and denim gave the brand another recognizable product category. PVH currently lists Calvin Klein across underwear, denim, apparel, accessories, home and fragrance. That breadth shows how the name now spans more than the clothing range associated with its 1968 beginnings, though the company sources cited here do not provide a full launch timeline for each category.

What changed when PVH acquired Calvin Klein?
In 2003, Phillips-Van Heusen—now known as PVH—acquired Calvin Klein. PVH’s corporate history describes the purchase as a “transformative acquisition.” In 2013, PVH acquired Warnaco, which returned ownership of global Calvin Klein jeans and underwear operations, according to PVH’s company history and its 2026 Form 10-K.
Ownership does not mean that PVH directly operates every product category. Its fiscal-year 2026 filing says the company extended certain U.S. and Canada Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger licenses with G-III in 2022, pertaining largely to women’s apparel wholesale. The arrangement is one example of licensing within the business; it should not be generalized to every Calvin Klein product or market.

How big is Calvin Klein today?
PVH reported approximately $9 billion in global retail sales for Calvin Klein products in 2025. That is a company-reported figure for retail sales of the brand’s products worldwide; it is not PVH’s corporate revenue, and it should not be read as the amount PVH itself booked as revenue. PVH’s current brand overview provides the figure alongside its description of Calvin Klein’s product categories.
The best-supported account of Calvin Klein’s growth is therefore a sequence rather than a single-cause explanation: a New York founding in 1968, a minimalist identity that the company says informed its creative direction, expansion into high-profile categories including designer underwear and jeans, and a 2003 acquisition that placed the brand within PVH. Corporate ownership, category expansion and a cohesive identity all feature in that history; the sources do not establish that any one factor alone made Calvin Klein a global fashion house.
