In a report published on 4 April 2025, PerthNow said The Butcher Shop Carlisle owner Matthew Budny was seeking $50,000 to keep the business running through the end of its 2027 lease. Budny told the outlet that his father’s death and disruptions to customer access had put pressure on the shop. The report does not establish whether the business or fundraiser remains active today.
What Budny said was putting pressure on the shop
PerthNow journalist Sophie Gannon reported that Budny bought The Butcher Shop Carlisle in October 2023, inspired by support he had received during his butcher’s apprenticeship. At the time of the April 2025 report, he was running the shop without other staff and opening six days a week.

The loss of his father and practical support
Budny told PerthNow that his father died in March 2024. He said his father had helped with deliveries and errands, contributed ideas, and encouraged him. After the death, Budny described the strain of carrying the work himself. He said taking the following week off resulted in $8,000 in lost turnover; the report did not specify a currency.
Customer access disruptions
Budny also said closures along Mint and Archer streets, together with work on a nearby train station, were limiting customer access. PerthNow reported that the disruptions were then estimated to be completed by May 2025. That was a forecast in the April 2025 report, not confirmation that the work finished on schedule. What the reported fundraiser was intended to cover
PerthNow said Budny had launched a GoFundMe campaign with a $50,000 target to help keep the business operating through the end of his lease in 2027. The article did not specify a currency for the target. It reported that he intended the money for current business debt, additional stock, advertising, and business advice.
Budny said he had tried to obtain bank support: “I tried the banks and things like that and that just wasn’t an option unfortunately,” as quoted by PerthNow. He also asked donors not to give anonymously, saying he hoped to repay them when the business was “back on top.” Those statements describe his intentions at the time of the report; they do not establish any later repayment.

What is known—and what the report does not establish
The figures and circumstances above are those reported by PerthNow in April 2025 and attributed to Budny; they are not independently verified financial records. That article does not say how much the campaign ultimately raised, whether donors were repaid, or whether the shop survived. It also does not provide a current update on the business or fundraiser. The headline’s appeal to “save his shop” reflects the situation described at publication, not evidence that the shop is currently at risk.
