There is no single winner across all measures of airline size. Delta reported 1,314 aircraft at year-end 2025, United reported more employees than Delta but used a different workforce measure, and their published network figures distinguish direct service from partner reach. These figures show why fleet size, workforce and network size need to be compared separately—not combined into a single global ranking.
How to compare the biggest airlines in the world
“Biggest” can mean the number of aircraft an airline operates, the size of its workforce, the places it serves, the passenger capacity it offers, or how often its aircraft fly. Those measures describe different things and may cover different entities: an individual airline, a parent group, a regional affiliate or an alliance.
- Fleet size is an aircraft count at a stated date. Group totals can include multiple airlines and cargo operations.
- Workforce may mean employee headcount or full-time equivalents (FTEs), so two companies’ totals are not necessarily like-for-like.
- Network size should separate destinations served by the airline itself from those available through alliance or other partners. A destination count may also depend on whether it refers to airports or cities.
- Available seat miles (ASM) measure passenger capacity: available seats multiplied by the distance flown. ASM is neither an aircraft count nor a destination count.
- Flight activity counts departures or aircraft movements over a defined period. It can change with schedules and seasonality.
The reported figures below are dated examples, not a complete, consistently measured worldwide league table. Company reports use different reporting boundaries and conventions, and activity studies cover different periods.
Which airline has the largest fleet?
Among the dated fleet figures available here, Delta reported 1,314 aircraft in its own fleet as of December 31, 2025. Lufthansa Group’s year-end total was 737 commercial aircraft across the airlines and Lufthansa Cargo listed in its 2025 Annual Report; Lufthansa Airlines alone accounted for 387. The group and airline figures are different scopes, not competing counts of the same entity.

The figures do not establish a complete global ranking: the cited reports do not supply a common, same-date census with harmonized rules for regional affiliates, subsidiaries, leased aircraft and cargo fleets. Emirates, for example, says it flies “the world’s biggest fleets of Airbus A380s and Boeing 777s.” That is a claim about those two aircraft types, not about the largest total airline fleet.
Which airline has the largest workforce?
United Airlines Holdings reported approximately 113,200 employees as of December 31, 2025. Delta reported approximately 103,000 FTE employees on the same date. United’s figure is an employee headcount; Delta’s is an FTE measure, which expresses staffing in full-time-equivalent terms. The totals therefore provide context but are not a precise like-for-like ranking.

For an exact workforce comparison, the reporting basis and organizational boundary must match—not just the date. A parent-company total may also cover a different set of businesses than an individual airline’s total.
Which airline has the largest network?
Network size depends on whether the count covers an airline’s own service or includes partner airlines. Delta said that, at the end of 2025, it offered up to 5,500 peak-day flights to more than 300 destinations on six continents. Separately, Delta and its alliance partners collectively served more than 150 countries and territories and nearly 1,000 destinations. The latter is a partner-inclusive reach figure, not Delta’s own direct destination count.

United said it connected around 181 million passengers to more than 380 destinations across six continents in 2025. Its filing also described Star Alliance—not United alone—as serving more than 1,150 airports in more than 190 countries and territories, with 17,500 average daily departures in 2025. An airport count for the alliance should not be compared directly with an individual airline’s destination count.

These counts are not a clean head-to-head ranking: they differ in whether partners are included and in whether the unit is destinations or airports. The disclosures do not establish a single comparable worldwide network ranking.

How capacity and flight activity change the picture
Available seat miles measure capacity
United reported 330,284 million available seat miles for 2025 and described itself as the world’s largest airline by available seat miles. That is United’s claim about a passenger-capacity measure, not an independent finding that it leads in fleet, workforce or destinations. An airline can carry more capacity across longer routes without having the most aircraft or destinations.
Departures and aircraft movements measure activity
EUROCONTROL’s February 2025 overview, using Flightradar24 historical global utilisation data, compared seven-day average aircraft movements for February 17–23, 2025. American Airlines recorded 5,895 movements, Delta 4,651 and United 4,529 during that week. These are aircraft movements in a specific week, not annual departures or fleet totals.

The German Aerospace Center (DLR) reported approximately 192,900 scheduled passenger departures worldwide for American Airlines in August 2025. In the same month, Ryanair had nearly 107,200 scheduled passenger departures in Europe. Because those figures cover different geographic scopes, they do not form a direct global comparison; DLR also cautions that holidays can affect month-to-month results.

What to check before calling an airline the “biggest”
- Name the metric. Say fleet, workforce, destinations, capacity or departures rather than using “biggest” alone.
- Name the reporting entity. Distinguish a carrier from its parent group, regional affiliates and alliance partners.
- Keep dates and periods attached. A year-end inventory, a week of movements and a month of scheduled departures describe different snapshots.
- Check the unit and counting basis. Employee headcount differs from FTEs; destinations differ from airports; direct routes differ from partner reach.
- Avoid a composite winner without consistent data. The available figures do not use one harmonized global dataset across all three measures.
