Best overall: Aer Travel Weekender. Choose the Samsonite Paralux Weekender Duffel if a dedicated shoe compartment matters, Briggs & Riley for rugged capacity, Away The Weekender for a structured short trip, Patagonia Black Hole 40L for outdoor travel, and Mark & Graham Canvas and Leather Weekender for a polished look. The right choice depends on trip length, what you carry, and whether the bag must fit under an airplane seat or in an overhead bin.

These recommendations draw on 2026 testing from Travel + Leisure, Forbes Vetted and Condé Nast Traveller. Their methods included packing bags for set trip lengths, using them in airport or public-transit conditions, and inspecting materials, hardware and damage after use.
How the bags were tested
Travel + Leisure tested 80 weekender bags in 2026. Reviewers examined materials, zippers, straps and organization, packed each bag for standardized two- and four-day trips, used them in airport-like mobility tests, and pushed fully packed bags off a counter before checking for scuffs, stains and damage.
Forbes Vetted considered more than 20 bags and scored its final selections from 1 to 5 after testing in different environments. Condé Nast Traveller editors used leading holdalls on trains and planes. Results are useful for comparing construction and handling, but they do not establish that any particular bag is accepted by every airline.

Detailed reviews
Aer Travel Weekender: best overall organization
Aer is the strongest choice when you want a dedicated place for electronics, clothing and small accessories rather than one large cavity. Travel + Leisure highlights its padded laptop sleeve and overall organization. The trade-off is carry weight: the bag can feel heavy when fully loaded, so it is less appealing if you regularly walk long distances with a maximum load.
Samsonite Paralux Weekender Duffel: best shoe compartment
The Paralux is the clearest pick for travelers who do not want shoes touching clean clothes. Its dedicated shoe compartment addresses a common weekend-packing problem without requiring a separate shoe bag. Check the current retailer listing for dimensions and availability before buying, because stock and product details can change.
Briggs & Riley Weekender Duffle: best for rugged capacity
Ballistic nylon and self-repairing zippers make the Briggs & Riley a practical choice for frequent handling, road trips and rougher travel. Travel + Leisure positions its 42-liter load for about three-day trips. Its larger capacity is useful only if you can carry it comfortably and your airline accepts the packed size.

Away The Weekender: best structured short-trip bag
The Away uses a clamshell opening, so you can see the entire load instead of digging through a deep duffel. Forbes Vetted also valued its padded laptop sleeve. Nylon with leather trim gives it a cleaner, more structured appearance than a soft gym-style bag, while the stated 38-liter capacity remains manageable for a short trip.
Patagonia Black Hole 40L: best for outdoor travel
Travel + Leisure selected the Black Hole 40L for camping-oriented travel. Its appeal is durability and a straightforward load space that works for outdoor clothing and gear. It is a better match for trailheads, car travel and changing weather than for a formal business trip.
Mark & Graham Canvas and Leather Weekender: best style
Forbes Vetted’s men’s pick combines a roomy main compartment with internal and external zip pockets and an adjustable crossbody strap. The tester described the canvas as tough and sturdy around the handle and found the leather bottom durable. It suits travelers who want a traditional weekender appearance without giving up basic organization.
Béis The Weekender: best for a large, separated load
The Béis stands out for its spacious bottom compartment, which can separate shoes or other bulky items from the main load. Its 49-liter size favors travelers who pack heavily; confirm whether the resulting dimensions meet your carrier’s limits.

Vera Bradley Miramar Weekender: lightest listed option
At 1.5 pounds according to Forbes Vetted, the Miramar minimizes the bag’s contribution to your carry weight. Recycled nylon keeps it casual, and the trolley sleeve lets it ride on rolling luggage. It is a sensible choice when low empty weight matters more than rigid structure.
July Carry All Split Weekender: best for transit-heavy trips
The July combines a clamshell layout, laptop pocket and trolley sleeve in water-resistant 420D twill nylon. Forbes Vetted’s tester used it through airports, on the subway and in a rainstorm, making it particularly relevant for travelers who switch between walking, rail and air travel.
Lo & Sons Sherborn Large: best for bulky or extended packing
The Sherborn Large offers the biggest stated capacity in this group and includes a bottom shoe compartment plus multiple pockets. Forbes Vetted notes that it is less structured, so it can be easier to overpack and harder to keep upright than a more rigid weekender.
Antler Overnight Bag: compact under-seat candidate
The Antler is designed around a smaller overnight load. Its compact dimensions make it a candidate for under-seat travel, but airline personal-item rules differ, so measure the packed bag against your specific carrier and fare.
Rank #4
Dagne Dover Landon Carryall Large: organized personal-item packing
The Landon combines water-resistant neoprene with a shoe bag, mesh pouch and laptop sleeve that accommodates laptops up to 16 inches. It is useful when you want several built-in compartments in a relatively compact carryall.
How much capacity do you need?
Forbes Vetted recommends at least 17 liters for a few days of essentials plus a laptop. In practice, 40 to 50 liters is a useful range for a larger duffel carrying several outfits, shoes and toiletries. Trip duration and weather matter as much as the calendar:
- One night: A compact 17- to 25-liter bag can work if you pack one outfit and minimal toiletries.
- Two or three nights: Around 28 to 40 liters gives more room for extra clothing and shoes without requiring a very large duffel.
- Four or five nights: A 40- to 50-liter design is more practical, especially when you need multiple shoes or business clothing.
- Cold-weather or outdoor travel: Bulky layers and footwear can consume space quickly; prioritize a larger capacity and a separate shoe or gear compartment.
Start with your actual packing list rather than buying by capacity alone. A highly structured 30-liter bag may hold your essentials more efficiently than an unstructured 40-liter sack.

Laptop protection
A padded sleeve is valuable when the bag will double as a work bag. Aer, Away, July and Dagne Dover explicitly include laptop protection in the cited reviews. Check the sleeve dimensions against your computer, not just the advertised screen size.

Best Value

- Helpful in various ways
Shoe and dirty-clothes separation
A bottom or side compartment keeps footwear away from clean clothing. Samsonite, Béis and Lo & Sons provide the clearest dedicated separation; Dagne Dover includes a shoe bag rather than a built-in compartment.
Carry comfort
Look for handles that can be held together, a padded or adjustable shoulder strap and a trolley sleeve if you will combine the bag with rolling luggage. More capacity also means more potential weight, so a comfortable empty bag can still become tiring when filled.
Weather and abrasion resistance
Water-resistant fabric helps with rain but does not make a weekender waterproof. July specifies water-resistant 420D twill nylon; Dagne Dover uses water-resistant neoprene; outdoor-focused Patagonia and rugged Briggs & Riley are better suited to harder handling. Protect electronics in an internal sleeve or separate waterproof pouch during sustained rain.
Structure versus flexibility
Clamshell openings and structured sides make packing and access easier, as seen with Away and July. Softer designs can compress into tighter spaces but may sag when partly filled; Forbes Vetted specifically describes the Lo & Sons Sherborn Large as less structured.
Airline-size reality
Product dimensions do not guarantee acceptance as a personal item or carry-on. Airlines set their own limits, and those limits can change by carrier, route and fare. Before departure, measure the packed bag—including bulging pockets—and compare it with the exact allowance on your ticket. A 40- to 50-liter duffel may fit an overhead bin on one airline but exceed another carrier’s limit; a compact bag may qualify as an under-seat item only when it is not overfilled.
A practical packing and buying checklist
- Write down the clothing, shoes, toiletries and electronics you actually take for the trip.
- Choose a capacity with a little margin, not enough room to encourage unnecessary items.
- Confirm laptop, shoe-compartment and trolley-sleeve dimensions against your gear.
- Check the empty weight if you will walk through terminals or face strict weight limits.
- Measure the packed bag against your airline’s current personal-item or carry-on rules.
- Review current stock, product version, retailer and return terms; prices and availability can change.
Which weekender should you buy?
Pick Aer when organization and a laptop sleeve are your priorities. Choose Samsonite for built-in shoe separation, Briggs & Riley for a hard-wearing larger duffel, Away for a neat clamshell layout, Patagonia for outdoor use, and Mark & Graham for canvas-and-leather style. The remaining bags cover specific needs: Béis and Lo & Sons maximize capacity, Vera Bradley minimizes empty weight, July favors transit and rain, Antler targets compact overnights, and Dagne Dover adds organized pockets and laptop protection.
