The best running water bottle is the one that fits your run, your preferred carry style, and the vest or belt you already own. Choose a handheld if you want water close at hand and are comfortable carrying weight in one hand; choose a soft flask in a vest, belt, or race bib if you want to keep your hands free. Then match capacity to your route and refill options, and confirm the bottle fits your carrier before buying.
Choose the carry style before the bottle
Start with how you want to carry water, rather than with a product ranking. A handheld offers direct access without a vest or belt, but puts weight in one hand. A soft flask carried in a compatible vest, belt, or race bib can leave your hands free and collapses as it empties. Neither format is best for every runner: comfort depends on fit, load, and personal preference.
Handheld bottles
A handheld makes sense when you want water readily accessible and do not mind carrying it in one hand. A secure, adjustable strap can reduce the need to grip the bottle continuously. Compare rigid bottles, which retain their shape and may offer insulation, with soft-flask handhelds, which shrink as they empty and are easier to stow. A pocket for keys, cards, or fuel may be useful if you run without another bag.
Runna’s guide names the HydraPak SkyFlask Speed as a collapsible soft-flask handheld, and also mentions Nathan SpeedDraw Plus, Amphipod Hydraform, and Salomon Soft Flask 500 ml as examples. These are editorial suggestions, not results of comparative hands-on testing; verify the current model, specifications, fit, and local availability before choosing one. Runna’s handheld-bottle guide

Soft flasks in a vest, belt, or race bib
A soft flask is a flexible bottle intended to fit a carrier pocket. CamelBak describes its running soft flasks as designed for hydration vest pockets, race bibs, and running belts. This setup is worth considering if you already own a carrier and prefer hands-free access. CamelBak lists its Quick Stow soft-flask category in 500 ml and 620 ml sizes on its UK page. CamelBak UK’s running soft-flask guidance
Choose capacity for the route and refill plan
Capacity is a gear choice, not a personal hydration prescription. Think about how long you expect to be between refill opportunities, what you already carry, and whether you prefer one larger flask or multiple smaller ones. Manufacturer size guidance is useful for comparing options, but it does not establish how much an individual runner should drink.
Rank #2
- Capacity | Each pack includes 2x 500ml (17oz) collapsible soft flasks, weighing only 25 grams each. Perfect for running, hiking, and outdoor activities, these lightweight bottles are easy to carry.
- Bite Valve Design | High-flow bite valve auto-seals after each sip, eliminating drips and leaks. Ideal for runners, cyclists, and sports enthusiasts seeking a reliable, no-spill design.
- Shrinks as You Drink | The flask shrinks as you drink to minimize water bounce, providing stability. Great for running, jogging, and other active pursuits, ensuring a comfortable experience.
- BPA & PVC Free: Made from BPA & PVC-free, food-grade TPU, ensuring safe hydration. Durable, reusable, and perfect for sports and outdoor adventures, these flasks prioritise health and safety.
- Dishwasher Safe: Our soft flasks are dishwasher safe for easy cleaning. Over time, the flask colour may change due to water pH levels, but it remains safe and effective for use.
| Capacity | How the cited brand presents it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 150 ml | Salomon identifies this size for gels or solutions. | Confirm that the intended contents and cap work with your setup. Salomon’s flask-selection guidance |
| 250 ml | Salomon identifies this size as an option for shorter runs. | Consider whether it suits the route and refill access you expect. Salomon’s flask-selection guidance |
| 350 ml | CamelBak positions this size for shorter efforts or as a second vest flask. | Check pocket fit and whether the capacity works with your refill plan. CamelBak UK’s running soft-flask guidance |
| 500 ml | Salomon says many hydration packs are designed around 500 ml flasks; CamelBak positions this size for trail races and longer training runs with regular aid stations. | These are brand recommendations, not a universal standard. Check the carrier and the route’s refill opportunities. Salomon’s flask-selection guidance; CamelBak UK’s running soft-flask guidance |
| 620 ml | CamelBak positions this size for runners seeking more capacity between refills. | Confirm the larger flask fits the carrier and is comfortable when full. CamelBak UK’s running soft-flask guidance |
Salomon notes that two front-pocket flasks can carry a combined liter when a pack is designed for 500 ml flasks. That describes a possible carrying setup, not a required amount to drink. Flask shapes can differ even at the same capacity, so check your specific pack rather than assuming volume guarantees fit. Salomon’s flask-selection guidance
Check compatibility with your vest or belt
Volume alone does not establish compatibility. Compare the flask’s profile and dimensions with the pocket, and check whether the cap or neck interferes with inserting, removing, or drinking from it. Thread compatibility matters if you plan to use an accessory: Salomon says its own filter caps require a 42 mm neck. That is a Salomon-specific requirement, not a general standard for running flasks. - AMBIDEXTROUS FIT: Featuring an ambidextrous fit, the SkyFlask can be carried in either hand with or without the thumb loop.
- ADJUSTABLE HAND STRAP: Adjustable hand strap, cinches down for a precise fit.
- THUMB LOOP: Soft, padded thumb loop lets you hold the flask in either hand without gripping or squeezing.
- SPEEDFILL CAP: Leak proof 42mm SpeedFill Cap provides fast refill access at aid stations.
- LIGHTWEIGHT AND COMPACT: Soft material conforms to your hand and packs away when empty.
- Look up the carrier maker’s stated flask size and shape guidance.
- Compare the flask profile and cap with the actual pocket, not just the stated capacity.
- If using a filter cap or another threaded accessory, confirm the neck specification for that exact product.
- Check that the flask is accessible while running and does not shift uncomfortably when full.
Compare comfort, access, and upkeep
After narrowing down the format and fit, compare the features that affect daily use. A soft flask collapses as it empties; a rigid bottle keeps its shape and may provide insulation. Consider how easily you can reach the valve, whether the strap adjusts securely, and how the bottle feels at its full weight. For handhelds, storage for small essentials may replace the need for another pocket.
- Carry comfort: For a handheld, assess strap adjustment and whether the bottle sits securely without constant gripping. For a vest or belt, consider pocket access and how the loaded carrier feels.
- Valve and drinking access: Check whether the valve is easy to use in your preferred carry position.
- Construction and insulation: Decide whether you value a collapsible bottle or a rigid shape, and whether insulation matters to you.
- Cleaning: Check how easily the bottle, cap, and valve can be rinsed and dried. CamelBak says its cleaning tablets remove sports-drink residue and help prevent odor; they are an optional accessory, not a requirement. CamelBak UK’s running soft-flask guidance
- Weight when full: Compare the full carry load, not only the empty bottle’s weight.
Do not use a bottle size as a drinking target
Fluid needs vary with the runner and conditions. Scheer et al., writing in Frontiers in Physiology in 2020, say fluid consumption varies with factors including running speed, sweat rate, body weight, prior hydration status, and ambient temperature, and recommend drinking to thirst rather than treating one rate as a universal target. The paper cites a range of 0.4–0.8 L per hour from earlier work, but that range should not be treated as an individual prescription. Scheer et al., “The Optimal Weight Carriage System for Runners”

The same study’s handheld example was a particular Ultimate Performance Kielder bottle with just over 500 ml capacity and a full weight of 685 g including its pouch. Those figures describe that study setup, not handheld bottles generally. Its comparison of one handheld, one belt, and one backpack at an equal total test load does not establish a universally best commercial design.
