Jorg Weppelink’s September 2025 shortlist for Fratello names five watches that were priced at or below €1,000 in the configurations he covered. It is a useful starting point, not a definitive ranking—and those are dated article prices, not confirmed prices for October 2026. The right choice depends on how you plan to wear it, how it fits, and whether the exact strap or bracelet configuration still meets your budget.

Jorg’s five picks at a glance

The table reflects the prices and specifications reported in Weppelink’s September 19, 2025 article. Confirm the precise reference, size, dial, and strap or bracelet before buying; a different configuration can cost more.

Watch and configuration Price in the September 2025 article Reported size and movement Best fit for
Seiko Prospex Speedtimer SPB513 or SPB515 €990 each 39.5 mm diameter; 12 mm thick; automatic Seiko 6R55, 72-hour reserve Retro-inspired sports styling with an internal countdown bezel
Tissot PRX Powermatic 80, 40 mm €775 40 mm; automatic Powermatic 80, 80-hour reserve Integrated-bracelet sport style; a 35 mm size is also noted
Certina DS Action Diver, 40.5 mm, NATO strap €905 40.5 mm case; 14.1 mm thick; 48 mm lug-to-lug; automatic ETA Powermatic 80.611 A dive-watch option on a fabric strap
Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical, 38 mm Under €1,000; exact price not stated in the article passage 38 mm; 9.5 mm thick; 47 mm lug-to-lug; manual-wind H-50, 80-hour reserve A slim field watch for someone who prefers manual winding
Christopher Ward C65 Dune Aeolian, canvas strap €950 38 mm steel case; 11.9 mm thick; 43.7 mm lug-to-lug; automatic Sellita SW200-1, 38-hour reserve Compact retro-sport styling on canvas

Prices and specifications are attributed to Jorg Weppelink’s Fratello shortlist, published September 19, 2025. They are not a current price check.

Which pick suits your priorities?

For a retro sports watch with a countdown bezel: Seiko Speedtimer SPB513 or SPB515

Despite the Speedtimer name, these are not chronographs. They use an internal countdown bezel, so do not choose one expecting stopwatch timing. Both references were listed at €990, leaving little room below the ceiling for a different configuration or a price change.

For an integrated-bracelet look: Tissot PRX Powermatic 80

The 40 mm version pairs its integrated bracelet with an automatic movement reported to run for up to 80 hours when fully wound. The source also notes 35 mm choices, which may be a better starting point if you prefer a smaller watch. Its all-black forged-carbon version was listed at €1,075, above this budget.

For a dive-watch design: Certina DS Action Diver

The 40.5 mm steel model was listed at €905 on NATO or €955 on a steel bracelet. The bracelet configuration costs €50 more in that article, so compare like for like. A separate 38 mm titanium version on NATO was listed at €995; its titanium bracelet version was €1,095. Those different sizes and materials make the reference and configuration especially important to verify.

If your main use is swimming or diving, check the exact watch’s manufacturer water-resistance guidance and suitability for the activity. A retailer’s general guide suggests using 100 m as a starting point for swimming and 200 m plus a screw-down crown for sea use, but simplified advice is not a substitute for the manufacturer’s instructions or a dive standard. See VISSO’s September 25, 2026 guide for that retailer’s broader selection criteria.

For a traditional field watch and manual winding: Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical

The 38 mm case is the slimmest of the listed options at 9.5 mm, and its H-50 movement is manually wound rather than automatic. The 80-hour reserve is useful if you take it off for a weekend, but you will need to wind it again when the reserve runs down. Weppelink’s article mentions bronze, blue-dial, and white-dial options; it does not state an exact price for this pick in the cited passage.

For a smaller retro-sport watch: Christopher Ward C65 Dune Aeolian

The 38 mm case and 43.7 mm lug-to-lug measurement make this the shortest listed watch from end to end. In the article, canvas cost €950 and leather €965, while the bracelet version was €1,165 and over budget. The reported 38-hour reserve is shorter than the 72- to 80-hour figures listed for the other automatic options here.

How to choose before spending €1,000

  1. Decide what you need it to do. The Hamilton is a field-watch choice, the PRX emphasizes integrated-bracelet sport styling, the Certina is the explicitly dive-oriented option, and the Seiko and Christopher Ward offer retro-sport designs. A style label alone does not establish suitability for a particular activity.
  2. Check fit using more than diameter. Compare thickness and lug-to-lug as well as case diameter. A 40 mm watch can wear differently from another 40 mm watch because its case shape and distance from lug tip to lug tip differ. If possible, try on the exact reference.
  3. Choose the winding style and reserve you want. The Hamilton is manual-wind; the other listed models are automatic. The quoted reserves range from 38 hours for the C65 to 80 hours for the PRX and Hamilton. A longer reserve can make a watch more convenient after time off the wrist, but it does not by itself determine which movement or watch is preferable.
  4. Price the exact configuration. Strap, bracelet, material, case size, and dial can move a model above the limit. The Certina and C65 show this directly: their bracelet versions cost more than the cited NATO, canvas, or leather versions, and two configurations exceed €1,000.
  5. Verify the current local offer. Check the reference number and what is included, then compare the current price from a seller serving your country. The cited figures are from 2025, and a later guide warns that dive-watch prices may exceed €1,000 depending on configuration, availability, price increases, or discounts. That is true reason to verify the checkout price, not to assume a dated figure remains available.

Other options if none of these is right

Jorg’s list is a five-watch editorial shortlist, not an exhaustive account of the category. For other automatic-watch directions, VISSO’s 2026 guide names Seiko 5 Sports and Presage, Hamilton Khaki Field, Tissot PRX and Seastar, and Seiko Prospex. Its recommendations are retailer-authored, so treat them as leads to investigate rather than an independent ranking.

For dive watches specifically, Fratello’s March 24, 2026 guide includes mechanical, quartz, and solar choices. It names the Seiko Prospex Turtle SRPE93 (€450–550), Certina DS Super PH500M (€850–950), and Citizen Promaster Professional Diver 300 BN1024-01E. Those are prices and examples reported by that guide, not guaranteed current offers; it explicitly notes that configuration, availability, price changes, and discounts can affect whether a model remains under €1,000. Read Fratello’s dive-watch guide for its full category list.
