For a 6-month-old, the most useful toys are simple ones that invite looking, reaching, grasping, mouthing safely and playing with a caregiver: a lightweight rattle, a soft cloth or picture book, and—optionally—a large, soft texture ball. These are play opportunities, not developmental treatments: no toy guarantees or accelerates a milestone.

What a 6-month-old may be practicing

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says its milestones describe things 75% or more of children can do by a given age; babies develop at different rates. At 6 months, listed milestones include reaching for a wanted toy and putting objects in the mouth to explore. Movement examples include rolling from tummy to back, pushing up with straight arms during tummy time, and leaning on the hands for support while sitting. Social and communication examples include recognizing familiar people, laughing, taking turns making sounds, blowing raspberries and squealing. These are observations of development, not outcomes a toy can promise. (CDC, “Milestones by 6 Months,” May 15, 2026.)

The CDC page also notes that playing on the floor or a play mat every day helps a baby move, learn and explore. A clean, supervised floor-play area gives a baby room to look, reach, roll and push up; the mat itself is not a milestone device.

Which toy types make sense

Choose for safe age fit and opportunities to interact, rather than for claims that a product will teach a skill. These categories are supported as examples in CDC and U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) guidance; they are not a tested or ranked list of products.

Toy type What it can invite What to check
Lightweight rattle Grasping, looking toward a sound and noticing movement. CDC gives rattles as an example of a safe, easy-to-hold baby toy in its 4-month guidance; CPSC notes that toys that move and make noise can appeal to young infants. Package age guidance, a secure construction, and no loose or detachable small parts.
Soft cloth or picture book Looking at colorful pictures and sharing attention with a caregiver. Point to an image, name it, and respond to the baby’s sounds. CDC recommends looking at colorful pictures in books or magazines and talking about them; CPSC includes picture books in its infant toy guide. Age guidance, sturdy construction and cleaning instructions. Keep the book for supervised play, not in the sleep space.
Large, soft texture or clutch ball Reaching, grasping and exploring different textures. CPSC lists clutch balls, texture balls and soft squeeze balls for young infants. For this age group, CPSC says balls should be at least 1-3/4 inches (44 mm) in diameter. Check the individual ball’s dimensions and age label.

When comparing options, look at the age label and construction, how easily the baby can grasp the item, its visual, sound or texture features, how it can be cleaned, and whether it lends itself to back-and-forth play. These are practical comparison points based on official age-fit and safety advice, not a validated scoring system.

Simple ways to play together

  1. Offer a reason to reach. During supervised floor play, place a suitable toy just out of reach and give the baby time to look, reach or try to roll toward it. Do not leave the baby unattended.
  2. Make sounds a conversation. When the baby squeals, babbles or blows raspberries, pause and respond; leave space for the baby to take another turn.
  3. Share a book. Point to a colorful picture, name what you see and wait for the baby’s response. The interaction matters more than finishing a page.
  4. Explore cause and effect. In a supervised game, let the baby drop a suitable toy and return it. Follow the baby’s interest and stop if they become upset.
  5. Support sitting practice. If the baby is learning to sit, hold and support them as needed while offering a toy within comfortable reach.

Safety checks before and during play

  • Follow the age label and instructions. Read the package guidance before offering a toy; age recommendations address safety as well as developmental appropriateness.
  • Keep small parts away. Babies commonly explore by mouthing. Avoid toys with small or detachable pieces, and keep household small objects out of reach.
  • Avoid button or coin batteries and high-powered magnets. A swallowed magnet can attract another magnet through body tissue and injure the intestine. Keep small magnets away from young children.
  • Inspect toys regularly. Do not offer an item with damage, loose parts, sharp edges, long strings, or brittle material. CPSC advises that mouthable infant toys should not have sharp edges, small parts, electrical parts, long strings, or glass or brittle plastic.
  • Keep hanging toys out of reach. Remove crib gyms or mobiles once the baby begins pushing up on hands and knees, or at 5 months, whichever comes first.
  • Supervise play and keep toys out of the sleep space. A soft toy suitable for supervised play is not thereby suitable to leave in an infant’s crib for sleep.

These safety points reflect guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and CPSC, including AAP materials on buying safe toys, choking prevention and toy safety, and CPSC’s infant toy and magnet guidance.
