Carmel, Indiana, is the strongest single national starting point right now: U.S. News ranked it No. 1 in its 2026–2027 Best Places to Live list. That is a ranking-based pick, not a universal answer for every household. Niche’s 2026 Best Suburbs list names Clarendon Hills, Illinois, as its top suburb, reflecting a different scope and methodology. Compare both—and your own priorities—before deciding where to move.
Why Carmel is the lead national pick
U.S. News ranked Carmel first in its 2026–2027 Best Places to Live ranking, ahead of Fishers, Indiana, and Flower Mound, Texas. The publication says Carmel scores highly on desirability, affordability, and job market. Its ranking evaluates affordability, desirability, job market, and quality of life, with category weights informed by a public survey and data from internal resources and government agencies. See U.S. News’s 2026–2027 ranking and methodology.
The lead pick is therefore useful as a shortlist starting point, especially if you are comparing suburbs with an eye on value and access to work. It does not establish that Carmel is the best fit for your income, employer, school needs, commute, or preferred way of life.
Why another ranking picks Clarendon Hills
Niche’s 2026 Best Suburbs to Live in America list puts Clarendon Hills, Illinois, first. Niche combines public data with resident reviews and considers factors that include schools, cost of living, safety, walkability, and housing-market health. It also defines “places” broadly to include neighborhoods, suburbs, and towns, rather than using exactly the same scope as the U.S. News list. Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThose different results are not a contradiction that can be settled by choosing whichever publisher sounds more persuasive. The lists measure different things, use different inputs, and are not a controlled head-to-head comparison. Treat rankings as ways to discover places worth investigating, not as proof of a universal winner.

How to decide which suburb fits your finances and daily life
Make a shortlist, then compare the same practical factors for each address. A strong national score cannot answer whether a specific home works for your budget or commute.
Set a complete housing budget
Compare the likely monthly cost of housing—not only a home’s asking price—including property taxes, insurance, utilities, maintenance, and any association fees. U.S. News highlights affordability for Carmel and Fishers, while Niche includes cost of living and housing-market health in its framework. Those broad signals do not replace checking current local costs against your own finances.

Test job access and commute
U.S. News weighs job-market conditions, and Niche considers employment and economic opportunity. Check whether the local employment base fits your industry and whether the actual route to your workplace works at the hours you travel. An aggregate job-market score cannot tell you if a particular job or commute is practical.
Check schools for the address, not just the ranking
Niche incorporates K–12 data and publishes separate school and family rankings, but a general place ranking is not a substitute for verifying the schools and attendance boundaries tied to a specific address. Confirm details with the relevant district before you commit.
Rank #4
Look beyond a community-wide safety grade
Niche considers safety and resident reviews. Use that information as an initial screening signal, then check the particular neighborhood and streets you are considering. A community-level score cannot describe every block or household’s experience.
Match walkability and amenities to your routine
Niche includes walkability among its criteria and has highlighted smaller, walkable communities near jobs and amenities. Verify how easily you can reach the places that matter to you—such as work, shops, parks, or services—and whether those routes fit your everyday routine.

What moving-interest data can—and cannot—tell you
MoveBuddha’s August 11, 2026 analysis offers a migration-interest lens, not a livability ranking. It compares inbound with outbound interest recorded through its moving calculator and selects one suburb per qualifying state. A suburb had to meet a threshold of at least 20 inbound and 20 outbound moves within 30 miles of a hub city; 43 states qualified. Read MoveBuddha’s analysis and its selection rules.
MoveBuddha reports that its selected suburb had greater inbound than outbound interest in 35 states. Across those state selections, it reports an average inbound-to-outbound ratio of 1.79, rising to 2.69 for its top 10, and a median home value of $420,000. These are figures from MoveBuddha’s calculator-based analysis, not Census migration counts or a national median home value for suburbs. They may show where people using that tool expressed interest; they do not establish which place offers the best quality of life.
A practical way to make the final choice
- Choose your non-negotiables. Set a realistic monthly housing ceiling, work-location and commute limits, school requirements if relevant, and the amenities or neighborhood qualities you need.
- Build a small, varied shortlist. Start with Carmel and Fishers, add Flower Mound if it is geographically and financially plausible, and consider Clarendon Hills as a top alternative from Niche’s different list.
- Check address-level details. Research current housing costs, property taxes, insurance, school boundaries, routes, and local services for the actual neighborhoods or homes you might choose.
- Compare trade-offs using your own priorities. A place that ranks lower overall may still be a better match if it makes your budget, commute, or family needs work.
Verdict
If you want one current national answer, Carmel is a defensible place to start because U.S. News ranked it first for 2026–2027. If your priorities differ from that ranking’s mix, compare it with alternatives such as Fishers and Clarendon Hills and make the decision on local costs and household fit—not rank alone.
