Best compact bifold: Slimfold MICRO Soft Shell is a defensible starting pick if you want a small wallet that still carries bills. Wirecutter named it a top pick in a review updated September 26, 2025, and measured it at 0.55 inch thick with six cards and two bills. That is a useful independent reference point—not a head-to-head test of every wallet released in 2026.
For a thinner, lighter carry, consider the Slimfold MICRO Tyvek, accepting that Wirecutter observed edge fraying and color loss on its sample. Secrid Slimwallet suits people who prefer a rigid card mechanism; leather options suit those who value conventional materials. The right choice depends on what you actually carry and how you use it.
How to choose a small wallet that stays small
- Count the cards you use. Include payment, ID, transit, and any cards you need daily. Extra loyalty cards can add bulk without improving your everyday carry.
- Decide how you carry cash. Check whether you need a full bill compartment, room for folded bills, or only occasional cash. If you use banknotes longer than US bills, confirm the wallet’s compatibility rather than assuming they will fit.
- Account for coins. A card sleeve or slim card mechanism may not enclose coins. If you carry them often, choose a model with a secure coin pocket or a different format.
- Compare loaded size, not just empty thickness. Dimensions measured with a stated number of cards and bills are more useful than an empty-wallet figure. Your own loaded wallet may be thicker depending on card count and construction.

What the measurements and capacity figures mean
Loaded thickness depends on the test load
Wirecutter’s MICRO Soft Shell and MICRO Tyvek figures use the same stated load: six cards and two bills. Under that condition, the Soft Shell measured 0.55 inch thick and the Tyvek 0.4 inch. These figures make a useful comparison between those tested samples, but they are not a prediction for a wallet loaded with more cards, different bills, or coins.

Capacity claims are not interchangeable
Slimfold’s official MICRO Soft Shell listing says “up to 11 credit cards and cash.” Wirecutter reported that its testers fit 13 cards comfortably. One is a manufacturer capacity claim; the other is an observation from the review’s testing. Neither guarantees the same fit for every combination of card thickness, bills, or personal preference.
Material affects wear as well as bulk
Wirecutter reported that the MICRO Tyvek sample began fraying and losing color at the edges after two months. In the same review, the MICRO Soft Shell sample passed a water-beading test with a dry interior. Those are observations on the review samples, not a promise about every wallet or a statement of expected lifespan. Wirecutter listed a five-year warranty for the Soft Shell; check Slimfold’s current warranty terms before relying on them.

Is RFID protection worth prioritizing?
RFID protection is a model-specific feature, not a default property of every slim wallet. Bellroy’s support page names the Note Sleeve, Hide & Seek, and Travel Wallet as RFID secure; it does not name the Slim Sleeve. Bellroy says, “RFID skimming is not common, but it can happen in certain cases.” That is the manufacturer’s assessment, not an independent security finding. RFID shielding relates to high-frequency RFID-based cards and should not be treated as protection from every kind of payment fraud.

Wirecutter’s review, updated September 26, 2025, says it tested more than two dozen slim wallets, including 16 bifolds and 10 card holders, to identify favorites across several leather and non-leather formats. That makes it a useful independent comparison for its test period. It does not establish a winner among every compact wallet available in 2026 or mean that every product listed above was tested in the same review.
