Glamour’s September 2026 guide names six products—not eleven—and describes its editors’ evaluation and dermatologist consultations; it does not support presenting an eleven-product list as tested or dermatologist-backed. The picks below are therefore attributed to Glamour, alongside practical guidance for choosing between a gentle moisturizing wash and a medicated dandruff shampoo.
First, decide whether you’re treating dryness or dandruff
Dry skin can result from moisture loss, irritating products, or cold, dry conditions. Dandruff may be associated with seborrheic dermatitis, and other skin conditions can resemble either. A flake alone does not identify the cause. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) explains the distinction and describes other conditions that can look like dry scalp: dry scalp and related conditions.
- For uncomplicated dryness: Look for a mild cleanser with moisturizing or conditioning ingredients, and avoid washing in a way that leaves the scalp feeling stripped. DermNet describes dry-hair shampoos as using mild conditioning surfactants to cleanse while minimizing sebum removal: DermNet’s shampoo overview.
- For dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis: A shampoo with an appropriate medicated active may help. The AAD lists zinc pyrithione, salicylic acid, sulfur, selenium sulfide, ketoconazole, and coal tar among dandruff-shampoo ingredients: AAD guidance on treating dandruff.
As dermatologist Iris Rubin told Glamour, “For dryness and flaking caused by seborrheic dermatitis, dandruff shampoos, which include ingredients such as ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, salicylic acid, or zinc pyrithione, can be a big help.” That advice is about flakes caused by seborrheic dermatitis, not every dry or itchy scalp.
Glamour’s six named picks
Glamour’s September 28, 2026, guide lists six choices for different scalp and hair needs. Its editors and contributors say they evaluated formulas across fine, thick, coarse, color-treated, straight, wavy, and curly hair, considering cleansing and rinsing, changes in tightness, itching, flakes or buildup, repeated-use feel, ingredients, directions, fragrance, price, availability, and suitability for sensitive or chemically treated hair. For a sensitive or easily irritated scalp
Glamour describes Vanicream Shampoo for Sensitive Skin as fragrance-free and formulated without dyes, sulfates, parabens, botanical extracts, essential oils, proteins, or formaldehyde-releasing preservatives; it notes glycerin and panthenol among the ingredients. Check the current product label and ingredient list before buying, especially if you have a known sensitivity.
For a labeled selenium-sulfide option
Head & Shoulders Clinical Strength Dry Scalp Rescue Shampoo is a separate medicated option: its DailyMed Drug Facts label lists selenium sulfide 1% as the active ingredient and identifies use for symptoms associated with dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. The label says to use it at least twice weekly or as directed by a doctor and includes cautions. Read the current package directions before use; this is not a reason to use an anti-dandruff shampoo for every case of simple dryness. The label is available from DailyMed.

How to use dandruff shampoo without overdoing it
- Apply it to the scalp. The AAD recommends focusing dandruff shampoo on the scalp rather than treating the hair lengths as the target.
- Follow that product’s label. Active ingredients, frequency, contact time, and cautions vary. Some shampoos need to sit for 5–10 minutes, according to the AAD; do not assume that timing applies to every formula.
- Account for hair texture. The AAD gives different example schedules by hair type and notes that dandruff ingredients can dry hair, particularly curly or coily hair. Scalp-only application may help limit exposure of the lengths.
- Reassess if it is not helping. The AAD suggests considering a product with a different active ingredient if one shampoo does not work. If symptoms persist or are severe, seek medical advice rather than repeatedly switching products without evaluation.
When to get a professional evaluation
Arrange an evaluation if you have persistent or severe symptoms, redness, thick scaling, hair loss, or symptoms that do not improve with over-the-counter care. These signs can require assessment for causes beyond ordinary dryness or dandruff. Glamour’s dermatologist-informed guidance likewise cautions against treating every flake as dandruff; Dr. Shamban says, “We should not treat every flake as dandruff.”

The title’s requested count is not supported by the current Glamour guide reviewed here: it names six products. Who What Wear separately says beauty editor Kaitlyn McLintock curated a dry-scalp list using personal product testing, expert outreach, and real-world reviews, but that is a separate publication’s account of its own process—not evidence for five additional products in Glamour’s list. Without verified identities and testing basis for five more picks, expanding the comparison would overstate what is established.
