Best overall: US Mobile Unlimited Starter
US Mobile Unlimited Starter offers a strong balance of price, data, hotspot allowance, and flexibility. Monthly service is $25 with taxes and fees included. It includes unlimited phone data and 20GB of hotspot data; exact high-speed experience and limits vary by network option.
Its most unusual advantage is network choice. US Mobile customers can select among Warp, Dark Star, and Light Speed, although coverage, features, and performance vary by option. That matters if one network works reliably at your home while another is stronger at your workplace or along your regular travel routes.
The annual version is advertised at $270 prepaid, or $22.50 per month. US Mobile is also advertising a separate $199 first-year offer for new lines. Treat that lower figure as a promotion, not the normal long-term price, and check the renewal amount before paying upfront. Annual Starter service includes 1GB of international roaming data; monthly customers may need an add-on.

Choose it if: you want unlimited phone data for $25, use a meaningful amount of hotspot data, or want the ability to test more than one underlying network.
Best simple unlimited plan: Visible
Visible is easier to understand than many competitors: $25 per month, taxes and fees included, for unlimited talk, text, and data on Verizon’s 5G and 4G LTE networks. Its broadband facts label identifies the price as a regular rate rather than an introductory price.
The basic plan includes unlimited hotspot use, but hotspot speeds are restricted. That distinction is important: “unlimited hotspot” does not mean unlimited high-speed tethering for laptops, tablets, or streaming devices. Basic Visible data may also be deprioritized during congestion, so service can slow in crowded areas even when the phone still shows a strong Verizon signal.
Visible also advertises an annual option at $275, equivalent to roughly $23 per month, with taxes and fees included. You give up some flexibility by paying for the year in advance, so the saving is most useful if you already know you will stay with the service.
Choose it if: you want Verizon coverage, a single predictable bill, and no need to compare network options or calculate taxes.
Best for premium data and hotspot: Visible+ Pro
Visible+ Pro costs $45 per month with taxes and fees included, or $450 per year. It is designed for people who regularly use their phone as a hotspot or want better access during congestion.
The plan includes unlimited premium data on Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband network, plus premium data on Verizon 5G and 4G LTE. Hotspot use is unlimited at up to three times the speed of basic Visible. Video can reach up to 4K UHD, subject to the device, network, and coverage.

US Mobile Unlimited Premium costs $44 per month with taxes and fees included. Premium includes unlimited priority data.
Hotspot is generous: the comparison details specify 100GB of high-speed hotspot data followed by slower tiers. International service includes up to 20GB of roaming data, 200 minutes, and 250 texts. A smartwatch plan is included when the line uses the Warp network.
The annual price is advertised at $390 prepaid, equivalent to $32.50 per month. A separate first-year promotion advertises $299. Those rates require upfront payment and may auto-renew at the regular annual price, so record the renewal date and amount if you use the promotion.

Best low-cost annual plan: Cricket Wireless 12-Month Unlimited

- We recently increased high-speed data allotments on every plan (but kept the same low pricing)! You may see a 5GB sticker on the front of your 6GB SIM Kit, rest assured your plan will have all 6GB of data loaded each month.

- WHO SHOULD GET IT: Anyone who hates their phone bill
The plan provides unlimited data, but Cricket reserves the right to temporarily slow speeds when the network is busy. The annual option may not include the same hotspot, international, or video features offered by more expensive monthly Cricket plans. Compare those terms before assuming it matches a $25 monthly plan from another carrier.
The main question is not whether the arithmetic works—it does—but whether you are comfortable committing $300 at once. Annual prepaid service can be a good budgeting tool, but switching early may be less convenient and refunds or plan changes may be limited.

Best low-data value: Mint Mobile
Mint Mobile is a better value for people who use a modest amount of data rather than for people who want the most powerful unlimited plan. Current standard three-month pricing is:
| Data allowance | Monthly equivalent | Three-month payment |
|---|---|---|
| 5GB | $15 | $45 |
| 15GB | $20 | $60 |
| 20GB | $25 | $75 |
| Unlimited | $30 | $90 |
Mint’s 12-month plans currently list the same monthly equivalents: 5GB for $15, 15GB for $20, 20GB for $25, and Unlimited for $30. Taxes and fees are extra. Both terms require advance payment. Mint uses T-Mobile’s network. Its Unlimited plan includes up to 20GB of hotspot data, but video streams at SD quality. Customers who use more than 50GB in a month may experience reduced speeds for the rest of the cycle in some locations when the network is busy, according to Mint’s Unlimited plan details.
Do not confuse Mint’s limited new-customer offer with its normal renewal price. An advertised $15-per-month unlimited deal can apply only to the initial term; the regular renewal amount appears afterward. Check the renewal screen before transferring your number.

Best international plan: Google Fi Wireless Unlimited Premium
Google Fi Wireless Unlimited Premium is expensive by prepaid standards but offers the broadest international package in this group. One line costs $65 per month, with lower per-line pricing for multiple lines. Taxes and government fees are extra.
In the United States, each person receives up to 100GB of high-speed data before speeds fall to 256Kbps for the rest of the billing cycle. Hotspot includes 50GB of high-speed data. Internationally, the plan provides 50GB of high-speed data in more than 200 destinations, followed by 256Kbps service.
Additional benefits include connectivity for tablets and laptops, 100GB of Google One storage, six months of YouTube Premium, and full connectivity for select smartwatches. These extras can reduce the effective cost for someone who would buy them separately, but they do not make Fi the best deal for a single-line customer who rarely leaves the country.
Choose it if: international data and roaming convenience are worth paying more than $25 to $45 per month.
Best Verizon-based alternative with extras: Total Wireless
Total Wireless Total MAX 5G BYO is advertised at $25 per month with Auto Pay, although the first month is charged at $30. The offer includes unlimited 5G Ultra Wideband data, unlimited hotspot at 5Mbps, roaming in more than 140 countries, and 100GB of cloud storage.
The $25 price is conditional: you need Auto Pay and an eligible bring-your-own-phone line. Total advertises tax-inclusive pricing for the relevant BYOD offer, but one-time charges and equipment costs can still apply. Confirm the first-month charge and eligibility before checkout.
It uses Verizon’s network, including Ultra Wideband where the plan and device qualify. It is worth considering against Visible if the international roaming and cloud storage are useful to you; otherwise, Visible’s simpler pricing may be easier to manage.

How to choose a prepaid plan
- Check the network at your actual locations. Use the carrier’s coverage checker for your home, workplace, school, and regular routes. Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile can all perform differently block by block.
- Review your data history. On an iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular. On Android, try Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > App data usage. Look at several months rather than one unusually high month.
- Separate phone data from hotspot data. A plan can have unlimited data on the handset but only 20GB of high-speed hotspot, or unlimited hotspot at a fixed low speed.
- Decide whether priority data matters. Deprioritization is most noticeable at concerts, stadiums, busy downtown areas, and rush hour. Heavy users should favor a plan that explicitly includes premium or priority data.
- Calculate the first-year and second-year cost. Include taxes, fees, activation charges, Auto Pay requirements, and the post-promotion renewal price. A $15 introductory rate may not remain $15.
- Check phone compatibility and unlocking. Confirm that your device supports the carrier’s network bands and is unlocked before transferring your number. A carrier’s coverage cannot help if the phone cannot connect to that network.
- Only prepay annually when the savings justify the loss of flexibility. Paying $270, $300, or $390 upfront lowers the monthly equivalent but makes switching, refunds, and plan changes less convenient.
What “unlimited” really means
Prepaid carriers use “unlimited” to describe several different products. Ask four separate questions:
- How much high-speed phone data is included? Mint may reduce speeds after 50GB in a month in busy locations, while US Mobile Premium specifies unlimited priority data. See Mint’s Unlimited plan terms and US Mobile’s unlimited-plan details.
- How much high-speed hotspot is included? US Mobile Starter includes 20GB, Mint Unlimited includes up to 20GB, and US Mobile Premium specifies 100GB of high-speed hotspot. Visible’s basic plan is unlimited but speed-restricted.
- Can traffic be deprioritized? Cricket says unlimited users may be temporarily slowed when the network is busy, and Visible’s basic plan may be deprioritized during congestion. See Cricket’s plan terms and Visible’s plan details.
- What happens after an allowance? Some plans slow service rather than cut it off; at 256Kbps, ordinary web browsing may work, but video and large downloads can become impractical.
Prepaid pricing traps to avoid
| Offer that looks cheap | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Mint introductory pricing | It may apply only to the initial three-month term; renewal can be higher. |
| US Mobile first-year promotions | The discounted amount requires upfront payment and can renew at the standard annual rate. |
| Visible discount codes | $5 monthly discounts are limited-time offers for eligible new members; the ordinary basic price is $25. |
| Google Fi’s advertised price | Taxes and government fees are excluded from the headline amount. |
| Metro’s $25-per-line offer | The four-line price is tied to an eligible switch or port-in and is not a single-line price. |
FAQ
What is the best prepaid phone plan in 2026?
US Mobile Unlimited Starter is the best overall choice for most people: it costs $25 per month with taxes and fees included, offers unlimited phone data and 20GB of hotspot, and lets customers choose among three network options. Visible is a simpler alternative at the same monthly price.
Is prepaid phone service cheaper than postpaid service?
It often is, especially for a single line, but compare the complete cost. Prepaid plans may require payment several months or a year in advance, and some advertised prices exclude taxes or apply only to new customers. Also compare premium data, hotspot, international service, and device financing.
Does unlimited phone data include unlimited hotspot?
Usually not. Hotspot is commonly capped separately or restricted to a fixed speed. For example, US Mobile Starter includes 20GB of hotspot, Mint Unlimited includes up to 20GB, and Visible’s basic plan offers unlimited hotspot with speed restrictions.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I pay for an annual prepaid phone plan?
An annual plan can lower the effective monthly cost, but only pay upfront if you expect to stay for the full term and the savings are meaningful. Check refund rules, renewal pricing, plan-change limits, and whether the annual version omits features included with monthly plans.
The Bottom Line
For most customers, choose US Mobile Unlimited Starter at $25 per month. It combines unlimited phone data, 20GB of hotspot, taxes and fees included, and access to multiple network options. Choose Visible if a straightforward Verizon-based plan matters more than network flexibility; Visible+ Pro for premium Verizon data and faster hotspot; US Mobile Premium for heavy priority-data use; Cricket for a low-cost AT&T annual commitment; Mint for light data; and Google Fi Premium for frequent international travel.
Before switching, test coverage where you actually spend time and compare the renewal price—not just the promotional first month.
