In the U.S., start with established retailers for boxed games, the relevant platform store for digital purchases, and check seller and condition carefully when buying used.
How to choose where to buy a game
Compare the same platform, edition, and format before judging which listing is the better deal. A low price can be offset by shipping, a third-party seller, a later delivery date, or different return terms.
- Platform and edition: Confirm the game works with your console or PC ecosystem, and check whether the listing is for the base game, a bundle, an edition, or a download code.
- Format: A physical copy may suit collecting or resale; a digital purchase is delivered through a platform account. Neither format alone establishes whether a particular game works offline or avoids downloads.
- Seller: On a marketplace, check who sells and fulfills the item. The retailer’s name on the page does not necessarily mean the retailer is the seller.
- Total cost and fulfillment: Compare the current item price, shipping, taxes, included bundle items, delivery date, and local pickup for the exact listing.
- Returns and warranty: Read the policy for that store, format, and item condition. Opened software and digital purchases can have restrictions.

Mainstream retailers
Nintendo’s U.S. directory of retailers carrying Nintendo products names Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, Nintendo Store, Target, and Walmart. These are reasonable places to begin a search for Nintendo games, but the directory covers Nintendo products generally; it does not confirm that a particular title is in stock or that every online listing is sold directly by the retailer. Check the exact listing and seller before ordering. Nintendo’s U.S. retailer directory
For games on other platforms, search retailers that carry that platform’s products and verify the listing rather than assuming Nintendo’s directory applies. Store availability, pickup, delivery, and return rules can vary by location and item.

Bundles and offers
Nintendo’s U.S. offers page lists selected game and hardware bundles. Nintendo notes that bundle savings are calculated against buying the components separately; participating retailers and stock can vary. A bundle makes sense when you want its included items, but compare its current total with the prices of those items individually before buying. Nintendo’s U.S. retail offers

Specialty retailers and trade-ins
GameStop is a useful option to investigate for pre-owned inventory and trade-ins. Its 2026 annual report describes exchanging eligible pre-owned gaming products for cash or credit and says some used goods are tested, repaired, sanitized, repackaged, and resold at refurbishment centers. Offers, eligibility, and local stock depend on the item and location, so check the current terms rather than assuming a particular trade-in value. The report also describes competition from mass merchants, electronics retailers, online stores, platform operators, and digital delivery. GameStop’s 2026 annual report filings

Marketplace listings
Used-game listings can differ in condition, included packaging, return eligibility, and warranty. Walmart Marketplace publishes condition standards for video-game listings, including requirements concerning disc function and cartridge battery life for certain pre-owned or restored grades. Some restored grades have stated return windows. Those standards do not mean every Walmart game listing is a Marketplace listing or that every item has the same terms; read the specific listing and seller details. Checks before buying used PlayStation products
PlayStation advises buyers of used PlayStation products to check seller reputation, inspect the item, request video proof that it works, and confirm that a console can connect to PlayStation services. PlayStation says third-party used products are not covered by its warranty, while certified refurbished PlayStation products include a warranty. These points concern PlayStation products; check the relevant manufacturer and seller terms for other brands. PlayStation’s U.S. buying guide

Where to buy digital games
Buy digitally from the storefront that serves the platform you will use: for example, Nintendo eShop or PlayStation Store for those consoles, or Steam for PC games. Check which account receives the purchase, platform compatibility, and that store’s refund rules. A digital policy on one service does not apply to another.
Steam refunds
Steam says games and software applications bought from its store are generally eligible for a refund request within two weeks of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. Requests outside those conditions may still be reviewed. Different rules can apply to DLC, in-game items, subscriptions, bundles, pre-purchases, and purchases made outside Steam. Steam’s policy page was last updated April 23, 2024; check it for current terms before purchasing. Steam’s refund policy

Nintendo Store physical returns
Nintendo Store’s direct-store policy allows returns or exchanges of physical items within 30 days after delivery under its listed conditions. Digital items and opened or unsealed products are excluded from that policy. These terms apply to purchases made directly from Nintendo Store, not to every retailer selling Nintendo products. On July 1, 2026, Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications, announced that “physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.” Sony says new games released after that point will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only; titles released or releasing before January 2028 in disc format are unaffected. This announcement is specific to new PlayStation games and does not establish a change for Nintendo, Xbox, or games generally. Sony’s PlayStation.Blog announcement
