There was no single “best” metaverse investment in 2024: Meta and Roblox offered exposure through public-company shares, while The Sandbox and Decentraland were blockchain-linked virtual-world projects with token and virtual-land economies. These are different assets with different risks—not interchangeable ways to invest. The examples below explain what each represents and what the available 2024 evidence can and cannot tell you; they are not a current ranking or a buy recommendation.
What does “investing in the metaverse” mean?
The phrase covers several kinds of exposure. Buying shares in a public company means owning an interest in a business with many activities. Buying a project token or virtual-land NFT is exposure to a digital asset and its market, not ownership of the company that operates the world. Private-company financing is different again and may not be available to ordinary investors.
- Public-company shares: Meta Platforms and Roblox are listed companies. Their shares reflect the broader businesses, not just their metaverse-related work.
- Project tokens: A token may be connected to a project’s digital economy, but its price, supply, liquidity, utility and holder rights need to be assessed separately. A token is not company equity.
- Virtual land: A parcel or other virtual asset may be represented by an NFT. Its value depends on demand, the platform and the ability to resell; it does not confer ownership of the platform.
- Private financing: Funding rounds can indicate that investors supplied capital on stated terms. They do not establish a publicly available price, a guaranteed return or an investor’s ability to sell.
For that reason, comparing projects requires more than asking which world looks most popular. Consider what you would own, how the project might earn money, whether people keep using it, and how you could exit the investment.
How do the four examples compare?
| Example | What the exposure represents | Evidence available for 2024 | What that evidence does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meta Platforms / Reality Labs | Public equity in a diversified company; not a pure-play metaverse investment. | Meta’s 2024 Form 10-K describes Reality Labs investment in VR, mixed-reality and AR devices, social-platform software, neural interfaces and foundational technology. It lists metaverse and wearables among 2025 investment priorities. | It does not isolate metaverse revenue or show that spending on these areas will produce a particular return. Source: Meta Platforms, Inc., 2025 Form 10-K for 2024. |
| Roblox | Public equity in a user-generated interactive platform; “metaverse” is one way to frame its business, not the whole investment case. | Roblox’s 2024 Form 10-K reports that 79% of daily active users and 37% of revenue came from outside the US and Canada in 2024. | Those figures are company-reported platform measures, not a valuation of metaverse activity or proof of future growth. Source: Roblox Corporation, 2025 Form 10-K for 2024. |
| The Sandbox | A blockchain-linked virtual-world project. A token or virtual-land purchase is not the same as buying equity in the project’s operator. | Animoca Brands announced on June 6, 2024 that The Sandbox raised US$20 million in convertible promissory notes with a US$1 billion valuation cap. The release also reported more than 1,000 user-generated experiences and 5.7 million members. | The financing terms were not a public-market valuation or a promise of investor returns. The experience and member figures were company-reported, and do not establish active use, liquidity or typical creator income. Source: Animoca Brands, June 6, 2024. |
| Decentraland | A blockchain-linked virtual world with a community-generated landscape and digital-asset economy. | Its October 2024 White Paper 2.0 says creators keep 97.5% of earnings, with 2.5% directed to the DAO. | The stated revenue split does not show typical creator earnings, how readily assets can be sold, or investment performance. Source: Decentraland, October 2024 White Paper 2.0. |
The figures above describe different things: company investment priorities, platform measures, a private financing announcement and a platform-stated creator split. They should not be treated as a like-for-like scorecard.

What did 2024 funding trends say about the sector?
S&P Global Market Intelligence Kagan reported that private-equity and venture-capital funding rounds involving 278 tracked metaverse companies totaled roughly US$530 million in 2023, down 87% from US$4.09 billion in 2022. The figures apply to the transactions tracked in that report—not all global metaverse-related investment, public-company capital spending or a forecast of future returns. The report described the decline amid technology setbacks and investor attention shifting toward generative AI. Source: S&P Global Market Intelligence Kagan, 2024.
This is useful context for judging the financing environment, but it cannot tell you whether a particular project is undervalued, likely to survive or likely to attract users. A funding slowdown is not by itself a reason to buy or sell a token or share.

How can you decide which type of investment fits your question?
If you want exposure through company shares
Assess the whole company rather than assuming its share price tracks metaverse adoption. Meta’s filing describes a range of Reality Labs work, while Roblox’s filing identifies a broad interactive platform and reports international user and revenue shares. Neither filing makes these companies pure-play bets on a single virtual world. Review each company’s filings, business mix, financial performance and risk disclosures before deciding whether its shares suit your portfolio.
If you are considering a token or virtual land
First identify the exact asset and the rights it provides. Check the current price and valuation, token supply and unlocks, trading volume and liquidity, custody arrangements, transaction costs, and the platform’s rules for using or transferring the asset. For virtual land, also consider whether there is meaningful demand for the location or experience independent of resale speculation. Those current market and valuation measures are not established by the 2024 information summarized here; they require date-stamped verification before any decision.

If you are assessing a private funding announcement
Read the instrument and terms, not just the headline valuation. The Sandbox announcement concerned convertible promissory notes and a valuation cap; that is not equivalent to an ordinary investor buying a publicly traded share at a confirmed market price. A funding announcement can explain how a project raised capital, but does not establish what a retail investor can buy or sell.
What should you check before putting money into a metaverse project?
- Name the asset: Write down whether you are considering a public share, token, NFT/virtual land or private investment. Establish what ownership or contractual rights come with it.
- Verify adoption: Look for current, clearly defined measures of recurring users and creator activity. Distinguish active users from registered members, and company-reported claims from independently verified information.
- Understand the economics: Identify who pays, for what, and how revenue reaches the company, creators, token holders or DAO. A published creator revenue split is not evidence of typical income.
- Check exit conditions: For a listed share, examine market access and trading conditions. For a token or NFT, check liquidity, custody, transfer restrictions, fees and whether buyers are available. Do not assume that an on-screen valuation means you can sell at that price.
- Assess execution and risk: Compare delivered features with announced roadmaps, and read disclosures for regulatory, privacy, cybersecurity, online-safety and user-generated-content risks. A plan is not evidence that a feature has shipped.
- Set a loss limit: Decide in advance how much you could afford to lose and avoid treating a speculative digital asset as a guaranteed or passive-income investment.
Are any of these the best metaverse projects to invest in now?
The 2024 evidence does not support a current “best” ranking. It does not establish current SAND or MANA prices, circulating supplies, market capitalizations or liquidity; nor does it provide comparable current user counts, cash flows or valuations for the four examples. A defensible ranking would also depend on an investor’s time horizon, risk tolerance and the price paid. Treat Meta and Roblox as company-share cases and The Sandbox and Decentraland as virtual-world cases with different asset structures, then evaluate the specific investment using current, date-stamped information.
