The Best Loyalty Cards Worth Signing Up For: Free Programs vs. Rewards Cards

A loyalty card is worth joining only if its rewards fit your existing spending, are practical to redeem, and outweigh any fees, conditions, and expiration risk.

In the U.S., a loyalty card can mean either a free retailer membership or a rewards credit card. They are not interchangeable: a retailer program may offer coupons and points without a credit application, while a credit card can bring fees, spending conditions, and redemption limits. A program is worth joining when its rewards fit purchases you already make and you can use them without excessive effort or letting them expire.

First, decide which kind of loyalty card you mean

Free retailer loyalty programs

These are accounts offered by grocery stores and other merchants. They may unlock digital coupons, member prices, or points. Albertsons forU is one current U.S. example: it is free to join, and no purchase is required to become a member. Its participating banners include Albertsons, Jewel-Osco, Acme, Carrs, Shaw’s, Star Market, Safeway, Vons, Pavilions, Randalls, Tom Thumb, Kings, and Balducci’s. Participation and offers can vary by location. Review the program terms before enrolling.

Rewards credit cards

These earn cash back, miles, or points on eligible purchases. They may also carry an annual fee, require particular spending or account balances for enhanced rewards, and restrict how rewards can be redeemed. A card is only a good fit if its benefits outweigh its costs for your own spending and you can pay the balance in full; interest charges can overwhelm rewards.

How to tell whether a program is worth joining

  • Start with your existing habits. Do not buy more or switch to a less convenient merchant just to earn points. Count only rewards tied to purchases or services you already expect to use.
  • Check what qualifies. Read exclusions, eligible categories, redemption thresholds, participating locations, and any minimum purchase requirements.
  • Work out the usable value. Consider the specific reward you will redeem, not the headline points total. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says reward values can vary by redemption route and that issuers or merchant partners set proprietary point values. Its 2024 report notes that major issuers typically estimate a point at about $0.01, but that is not a guaranteed value. See the CFPB’s 2024 Credit Card Rewards Issue Spotlight.
  • Look for the clock and the effort. Check expiration dates and how many steps are needed to activate offers, earn rewards, and redeem them. A small benefit that takes repeated app visits or expires before you use it may not be worthwhile.
  • For a credit card, include every condition. Compare annual fees, spending caps, required deposits or investments, bonus rules, and the redemption you actually plan to use. Treat advertised points as a promise of points—not cash at a fixed rate.

Albertsons forU: a concrete free-program example

Albertsons describes forU as a no-cost customer loyalty program. Its stated benefits include personalized weekly grocery deals, a welcome offer, a birthday treat, a monthly free item, and points that can be redeemed for grocery rewards or participating-station fuel discounts. The forU program page and FAQ describe current offers and rules; check them for your store because offers and availability may differ.

How points earn and redeem

Under terms last updated June 12, 2026, members earn 1 point per whole dollar on eligible groceries and qualifying pharmacy purchases, and 2 points per whole dollar on eligible gift cards. Not every purchase qualifies: listed exclusions include alcohol, tobacco, fuel and automotive services, and some refrigerated dairy items, with further terms applying.

Examples in the FAQ include a $4 basket discount for 300 points, a $15 basket discount for 1,000 points, and 10 cents off per gallon at participating fuel stations for 100 points. These are program examples, not a promise that every reward will be available to every member or at every location.

Offers have conditions and expiration rules

The monthly free item can be worth up to $10, but it must be added before its stated expiration and begins the month after registration. Continuing monthly offers requires a qualifying purchase within the program’s stated recent-use window. The birthday offer can also be worth up to $10 and has eligibility conditions. These are conditional offers, not unconditional cash savings.

Verify the current terms, including the mandatory individual arbitration provision and the company’s ability to change program rules, as well as the program’s privacy information, before joining.

When a rewards credit card may be a better fit

A credit card may suit someone who wants rewards across many purchases rather than discounts at a single retailer. But reward currencies are not interchangeable: cash back, miles, and points can have different redemption options and values. The CFPB’s 2024 report notes that “The value of rewards currencies is set by the credit card issuer or merchant partner and can often fluctuate.” It also describes sign-up bonuses and category promotions as sources of complexity.

Some cards advertise a higher rate only when the customer has qualifying deposit or investment balances, a particular account, or another status. For example, Kiplinger’s July 24, 2026 article describes Bank of America Preferred Rewards tiers starting at $20,000 in combined qualifying balances, with reward bonuses of 25% at Gold, 50% at Platinum, and 75% at Platinum Honors and Diamond Honors. This is a dated secondary-source example, not a universal ranking or a guarantee of current terms. Check the issuer’s current eligibility requirements, fees, and rewards before applying. See Kiplinger’s relationship-rewards examples.

A simple decision rule

  1. List the stores and services you already use, and consider free retailer memberships only where you regularly shop.
  2. For each program, check eligible purchases, actual redemption choices, thresholds, expiration, and the steps needed to claim offers.
  3. For each credit card, estimate rewards using your ordinary spending and realistic redemption, then subtract the annual fee and account-related costs.
  4. Skip any program whose value depends on spending extra, carrying a balance, or maintaining accounts you would not otherwise want.

The CFPB cited its 2023 Report to Congress in saying that approximately three in four general-purpose credit-card accounts are rewards cards. That prevalence does not make every rewards card valuable to every person; the useful comparison is the reward you can actually redeem against the cost and conditions you must accept.
