If you want the U.S. National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC) credential, start by comparing training programs that are currently approved by the National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching (NBHWC). No one program is universally best: NBHWC approves programs but does not recommend specific providers, and completing an approved course is only one step toward board certification.

What “best” means for a health coach certification

For the NBC-HWC pathway, an approved training program is a required qualification—not the credential itself. NBHWC’s directory listed more than 138 approved programs when its certification page was accessed in 2026, but the directory changes. Check the NBHWC approved training program directory directly before enrolling, and confirm the program was approved during the period you attend it.

NBHWC states that it reviews and approves coach training programs, but does not offer training or recommend specific programs. Approval establishes eligibility to pursue the board exam pathway; it is not an endorsement of every provider’s business practices or content.

Requirements for the NBC-HWC credential

Graduates must meet additional requirements before they can earn the board credential. NBHWC’s Get Board Certified page, accessed in 2026, lists the following:

  • Completion of an NBHWC-approved training program.
  • Passing the program’s practical skills assessment.
  • At least 50 qualifying individual coaching sessions after that assessment.
  • Either an associate degree or higher in any field, or 4,000 hours of qualifying work experience in any field.
  • Application for and a passing result on the board exam.

The 50-session rule counts individual sessions, not 50 different clients. NBHWC’s FAQ says not to count sessions with friends, family members, or current classmates, and sessions completed before passing the program’s practical skills assessment do not qualify.

As listed by NBHWC when accessed in 2026, the exam fee is $400 and the application fee is $100. Its page also showed exam windows beginning Nov. 30, 2026, Mar. 8, 2027, and July 19, 2027. Fees and dates can change; verify current details with NBHWC before budgeting or scheduling.

Compare programs by fit, format, and total cost

Start with current approval status, then compare the practical details that shape the cost and experience. A program’s headline tuition may not include materials, optional intensives, or other support. Training tuition is separate from NBHWC’s application and exam fees.

  • Full cost: Add tuition, fees, course materials, travel or optional intensives, and the board application and exam charges. Healthline quoted an expert estimate of $4,000–$5,000 as an average program cost; this is an estimate, not an official NBHWC statistic or a comprehensive market survey.
  • Schedule and format: Check whether instruction is live, self-paced, online, or cohort-based, and how long students typically have to complete it.
  • Practice and feedback: Look for supervised practice, mentoring, and specific feedback on coaching skills. These features can help prepare students for the practical assessment and later session requirement.
  • Curriculum and setting: Consider whether the program’s emphasis fits the population or setting you hope to serve, such as nutrition, fitness, integrative health, a particular life stage, or healthcare.
  • Support and requirements: Ask what academic support, make-up options, and practical assessment arrangements are included, and whether any additional costs apply.

Programs to investigate—not a quality ranking

The following examples show different formats and reported price points. Healthline’s comparison, accessed in October 2026, reported the durations and prices below. Treat them as publisher-reported figures, not guaranteed current quotes; confirm tuition, duration, and current NBHWC approval with the provider and the NBHWC directory before making a decision.

Rank #3
Sale
Program example Reported duration Reported price What to verify
Mindbodygreen Health Coaching 20 weeks $5,999 Current tuition, schedule, fees, and active approval status.
ACE Health Coach Certification Up to one year $2,990 Current tuition, completion timeline, and active approval status.
AFPA Health Coach Certification 12 weeks $2,548 Whether the specific course you are considering is the NBHWC-approved program, plus current price and schedule.
Dr. Sears options 6–36 weeks $975–$3,875 Which option fits your goal, its current cost and duration, and approval status.

AFPA’s own page describes its Certified Master Health and Wellness Coach program as NBHWC-approved; verify the specific program in the live directory. Precision Nutrition’s standard Nutrition Coach Certification is not itself an NBHWC-approved program, while Healthline describes its Level 2 Master Health Coach option as approved. Check the directory for the current status of the exact course: a provider’s other certification does not automatically qualify for the NBC-HWC pathway.

These examples are not directly comparable measures of quality or career results. The available sources do not establish a reliable, comparable pass-rate dataset or independent evidence that one provider leads to better career outcomes than another.

How to choose the right option for your goal

  1. Confirm the credential you want. If your goal is the NBC-HWC credential, use the NBHWC directory to identify approved training; a general health coach certificate may serve another purpose but may not meet this requirement.
  2. Check approval for your attendance period. Verify the exact program and confirm approval covers when you plan to attend.
  3. Request a complete cost breakdown. Ask providers to identify tuition, materials, fees, optional components, payment terms, and any costs not included in the quoted price.
  4. Match the teaching format to your life. Compare live-session times, self-paced expectations, course length, and the amount of practice and feedback.
  5. Assess the pathway beyond coursework. Plan how you will complete the qualifying sessions and confirm you meet the education or work-experience route before investing.
  6. Check current exam details with NBHWC. Confirm fees, registration requirements, and available exam windows on the official certification page.

What the credential does—and does not—mean

NBC-HWC is a professional board certification, not a healthcare license. It does not, by itself, authorize someone to diagnose conditions, prescribe treatment, or practice a licensed profession. Scope and employer preferences vary by role and location, so check applicable rules and job requirements for the work you intend to do. Completing coursework alone does not make someone an NBC-HWC, and certification is not a guarantee of employment.
