December 2024’s advertised EV lease deals included payments as low as $129 a month, but the monthly figure alone could be misleading. In Electrek’s December 24 roundup, the 2025 Nissan LEAF’s $129 payment worked out to a reported $199 a month after spreading its $2,529 due at signing across the lease. Several other offers advertised below $300 a month had effective costs above $300.

These are historical U.S. offers, not deals available now. Prices and availability varied by location, and the roundup did not establish every offer’s mileage allowance, taxes, fees or eligibility rules.

How to read the December 2024 lease figures

Electrek’s roundup listed the advertised payment, lease term, amount due at signing and an effective monthly rate that included the upfront amount. The effective rate is useful for comparing the listed cash cost across the lease term, but it is not a full estimate of every possible expense: taxes, fees, mileage limits and eligibility conditions were not consistently specified in the reviewed article.

The table below reproduces the roundup’s reported figures. These were publication-reported offers, not verified nationwide manufacturer terms. A payment below $300 does not mean the lease’s effective monthly cost was also below $300.

Source for all figures: Peter Johnson, Electrek’s December 24, 2024 roundup. Its page states that it was updated January 6, 2025. The IONIQ 5 term conflicts between the table and article narrative, so the term should not be treated as settled.

Which deals had the lowest effective monthly costs?

Nissan LEAF

The 2025 LEAF had the lowest advertised payment in the table: $129 a month for 36 months with $2,529 due at signing. Electrek reported its effective monthly rate as $199 after including that upfront amount.

Fiat 500e and Honda Prologue

The listed 2024 Fiat 500e INSPI(RED) offer was $179 a month for 42 months, with $2,979 due at signing and a reported effective rate of $250 a month. The Prologue was listed at $229 a month for 36 months, with $1,299 due and a $265 effective rate.

Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra

The table put the 2024 Toyota bZ4X at $219 a month for 39 months, with $2,999 due and a $296 effective rate. The 2024 Subaru Solterra was listed at $279 a month for 36 months, with $279 due and a $287 effective rate.

Why the advertised payment could be deceptive

A large amount due at signing can change the comparison substantially. The 2025 Kia Niro EV, for example, was shown at $149 a month, but its $3,999 upfront amount raised its reported effective monthly rate to $315. The same pattern appears in the Nissan Ariya, Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, and Chevrolet Equinox EV figures.

Electrek’s article also described a separate Niro EV offer at $199 a month for 36 months, with $3,999 due and a reported $310 effective rate. That is a different offer from the $149, 24-month entry in its table.

For any real lease comparison, request the same details for each vehicle: term, amount due at signing, total scheduled payments, mileage allowance, taxes and fees, location, credit or customer eligibility, and participating dealer. The December roundup did not establish all of those details, so its effective-rate figures should not be read as a complete all-in cost.

Location and offer terms mattered

The Nissan Ariya illustrates regional variation. Electrek said a $99-a-month offer was available only in Colorado. Its New York example was $169 a month for 24 months, with $6,219 upfront and a reported $428 effective monthly rate.

The article also mentioned a Colorado dealer’s Fiat 500e offer at $0 a month for 27 months with $0 down. That was a local dealer offer, not evidence of a universally available or cost-free lease; taxes, fees and eligibility details were not established in the roundup.

For the 2024 Honda Prologue, Electrek separately described an offer at $259 a month with $2,999 upfront and a reported $342 effective monthly rate, distinct from the table’s $229 offer.

What the roundup said about the broader EV market

Electrek reported that nearly 9% of U.S. vehicle sales were electric in Q3 2024, citing Cox Automotive. It also reported Experian figures showing leases represented 45% of new EV transactions in Q3 2024, compared with 25% in Q3 2023 and 9.5% in Q3 2022. These are figures as attributed by Electrek; the underlying Cox Automotive and Experian publications were not independently verified here.

The article also said that the average monthly EV lease payment was $198 lower than financing a new model, but it did not detail the comparison methodology. It reported discounts on some EV models reaching $10,000 to more than $20,000. Those market-level observations do not establish what any individual lessee would qualify for.

Promotional extras were not necessarily lease benefits

Electrek reported that Tesla’s year-end promotions included three free months of Supercharging and Full Self-Driving, with delivery required by December 31, 2024. It also described Ford’s Power Promise as including a free Level 2 home charger and standard installation for EV buyers. The roundup does not establish that these purchase-related benefits applied to leases.
