There is no verified, apples-to-apples ranking here of the best-performing ESG funds in calendar year 2025. For U.S. investors, Morningstar’s year-end data names several of the largest sustainable funds, but size is not performance or a recommendation. Use those names as research starting points—not winners—and compare funds by investment approach, costs, holdings, and the sustainability goals that matter to you.
What “best ESG fund” can—and cannot—mean
“Best” depends on the question. A fund’s 2025 return measures past investment performance; its expense ratio describes one part of its cost; an analyst rating expresses an opinion about the fund; and an ESG rating assesses sustainability characteristics of its holdings. None of those measures is a substitute for the others.
ESG funds also do not all pursue the same goal. Strategies may exclude certain activities, favor companies considered stronger than peers on sustainability factors, incorporate ESG information into investment decisions, or seek a particular impact. A fund’s ESG label alone does not establish which approach it uses or whether it matches your priorities.
This article focuses on U.S. sustainable funds because the available year-end asset figures and named funds are U.S.-specific. The data below are a market snapshot, not a personalized recommendation or a complete ranking of U.S. funds.

What the 2025 market data says
Morningstar’s report, published in February 2026 using December 2025 data, puts global sustainable-fund assets above USD 3.90 trillion at year-end. U.S. sustainable-fund assets reached USD 368 billion.
| Measure | Year-end 2025 figure | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Global sustainable-fund assets | Above USD 3.90 trillion | Scale of the global sustainable-fund market, not its investment performance. |
| U.S. sustainable-fund assets | USD 368 billion | Scale of the U.S. market, not evidence that a particular fund is best. |
| U.S. sustainable-fund asset mix | Equity: 84%; fixed income: 14%; allocation funds: 2% | Equities made up most U.S. sustainable-fund assets in December 2025; this is a market-wide mix, not a recommended portfolio allocation. |
Morningstar lists Parnassus Core Equity Fund, Vanguard FTSE Social Index Fund, and iShares ESG Aware MSCI USA ETF among the largest U.S. sustainable funds by assets at year-end. That makes them possible starting points for further comparison, not a list of the best-performing funds, the lowest-cost funds, or funds that suit every investor.

Why the year’s headline numbers do not identify the best fund
Flows show investor activity, not returns
Morningstar reported USD 84 billion in net outflows from global sustainable funds over full-year 2025. Outflows describe money moving out of the category; they do not tell you how an individual fund performed.
A sector index is not an ESG-fund ranking
The Morningstar Global Markets Renewable Energy Index gained 24.8% in 2025, according to Morningstar’s year-end coverage. That is a sector-index result, not the calendar-year return of a representative ESG fund. It cannot be used to infer how a diversified sustainable fund performed.

Rank #3
A holdings rating is not a return forecast
MSCI describes its fund ratings as a scale from CCC (laggard) to AAA (leader) that measures the environmental, social, and governance characteristics of a fund’s underlying holdings. Treat that as one holdings-based sustainability lens—not proof of alignment with every investor’s values or a promise of better returns.
How to choose a fund for your own shortlist
-
Set the scope before comparing
Decide whether you want an equity, fixed-income, or allocation fund, and identify the geographic exposure you need. Compare funds in the same broad peer group; unlike products can have different risks and return patterns.
-
Identify the strategy and stated ESG objective
Read the fund’s materials to determine whether it uses exclusions, best-in-class selection, ESG integration, or an impact objective. Check that its stated approach addresses the issues you care about rather than relying on the ESG label alone.
-
Compare performance on consistent terms
Use the same return period, share class, and measurement convention for every candidate. For a calendar-year 2025 comparison, look for each fund’s 2025 total return and an appropriate benchmark return. A live screen showing other return horizons is not, by itself, a frozen calendar-year 2025 ranking.

Check cost, holdings, and concentration
Compare expense ratios and consider other applicable costs. Review the holdings and how concentrated the fund is, along with its index or active approach and benchmark. A low expense ratio or high sustainability rating by itself does not settle whether a fund is right for you.
-
Record the date and source of each rating
Ratings and fund information can change. Note the provider and date, and avoid treating an analyst opinion, a holdings-based sustainability rating, and a performance record as interchangeable evidence.
Morningstar’s sustainable-fund listings provide comparison fields such as category, ratings, returns over multiple periods, and adjusted expense ratios; its index and Medalist screens distinguish passive funds and analyst-rated candidates. Use the relevant category and return period when exploring those listings. A screen is a research aid, not a substitute for confirming current fund documents and share-class details.

The evidence available here does not establish a complete, comparable calendar-year 2025 ranking of funds. Rankings depend on choices such as geography, asset class, category, share class, and which funds are included. The largest-fund names above are useful leads, but the available data do not establish that they led returns or should be bought.
For a defensible personal choice, select candidates that fit your asset-class and sustainability objectives, then compare their dated 2025 total returns with suitable benchmarks alongside costs, holdings, concentration, and approach. The result is a shortlist tailored to your criteria—not a universal winner.
