Visible is the best cheap unlimited phone plan for most single-line users in 2026—if Verizon works well where you live. Its base plan is listed at $25 per month with taxes and fees included. Metro by T-Mobile is the strongest low-cost T-Mobile option, while Mint, US Mobile, and Tello are better fits for annual prepay, network flexibility, and moderate data use respectively.

Prices and offers in this guide were checked against provider pages on August 18, 2026. Promotions, taxes, fees, eligibility rules, and plan terms can change.

The five best cheap cell phone plans in 2026

Best for Provider and plan Advertised price Important limitation
Best overall cheap unlimited plan Visible base unlimited $25/month, taxes and fees included Network priority and hotspot features may be less generous than premium tiers
Best T-Mobile-network value Metro six-month unlimited $120 upfront, or $20/month effective Requires prepayment and offer terms must be checked
Best annual-prepay option Mint Mobile 12-month unlimited $30/month regular price; $15/month introductory price shown Taxes and fees are extra; $15 is not the ongoing price
Best network flexibility US Mobile Unlimited Starter or Premium $22.50 or $32.50 monthly Features and limits vary by selected underlying network
Best ultra-budget option Tello Unlimited $25/month after a three-month $15 introduction Only 50 GB is high-speed before throttling

This ranking is an editorial judgment, not a location-specific speed test. The cheapest plan is only a bargain if its network works at your home, workplace, school, and usual travel destinations.

Visible uses Verizon’s network. That makes it a strong choice where Verizon coverage is reliable, but it does not guarantee identical performance to a premium Verizon postpaid plan. Lower-priced service can have different priority during congestion, and hotspot performance is more restricted than on higher tiers.

Choose Visible if: you want one predictable bill, do not need extensive international features, and Verizon performs well in your area.

Skip it if: Verizon is congested where you use your phone, you need substantial high-speed hotspot data, or you require extensive retail-store support.

Check Visible’s coverage map before switching.

2. Metro by T-Mobile: best low-cost T-Mobile option

Metro’s current plan page shows a six-month unlimited offer requiring $120 upfront, equivalent to $20 per month. It also displays a $25 monthly unlimited option and higher-priced tiers with different hotspot and data features.

The six-month offer is attractive because it beats many monthly prices, but the effective rate is not the same as a $20 month-to-month bill. You must pay for six months in advance, and eligibility, online availability, taxes, and selected-plan conditions should be confirmed at checkout.

Metro’s disclosures also warn that customers using more than 35 GB in a month may notice slower speeds when the network is busy on the relevant plan. Hotspot allowances vary by tier.

Choose Metro if: T-Mobile works well locally and you can comfortably prepay $120.

Skip it if: you need maximum flexibility, cannot prepay, or regularly depend on hotspot data without checking the exact tier.

3. Mint Mobile: best for annual prepay

Mint’s unlimited plan is appealing for customers comfortable paying for service in advance. Current official disclosures show these unlimited pricing signals:

  • Three months: $15 per month introductory price; $40 regular monthly price.
  • Six months: $15 per month introductory price; $35 regular monthly price.
  • Twelve months: $15 per month introductory price; $30 regular monthly price.

The displayed $15 rate is introductory, not a permanent unlimited price. Government taxes vary by location, and Mint’s disclosures list provider and recovery fees in addition to the advertised price. For that reason, compare the renewal price and the checkout total—not just the promotional headline.

Mint’s published typical performance disclosures list download speeds of 79–357 Mbps, upload speeds of 6–30 Mbps, and latency of 17–32 ms. Actual performance depends on location, device, signal, congestion, and network management.

Choose Mint if: T-Mobile coverage is strong and you want to prepay for a longer term.

Skip it if: you need a genuinely month-to-month bill, dislike extra taxes and fees, or would be financially strained by annual prepayment.

4. US Mobile: best for network choice and flexibility

US Mobile is the most flexible pick when coverage matters more than choosing a single carrier upfront. It offers service across three major U.S. networks and supports network transfers under its plan structure. The exact network matters: hotspot, priority data, international features, and usage limits can differ by network and tier.

Displayed taxes and fees are included. Annual promotional pricing applies to new lines and renews at the full price, so record the renewal cost before choosing annual billing. Some Starter configurations may slow after 70 GB per month, while Unlimited Flex includes 10 GB of high-speed data before slower service.

Choose US Mobile if: you want to compare networks, need international features, or value more control over your plan.

Skip it if: you want the least complicated signup and do not need network choice or additional flexibility.

5. Tello: best ultra-budget choice for moderate users

Tello’s unlimited plan is listed at $15 per month for the first three months, then $25 per month. Provider monthly fees are included, while government taxes vary by location. The plan is contract-free and has no early-termination fee.

The key qualification is the data limit: Tello specifies 50 GB of high-speed data, followed by throttled service. That makes it a reasonable choice for moderate users, but not a true unlimited full-speed plan for someone who streams constantly, uses heavy hotspot data, or routinely exceeds 50 GB.

Tello also lists lower-cost plans such as 2 GB for $10 per month, 10 GB for $15, and 20 GB for $20. These may be better values than unlimited service if your usage is light.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Tello if: you want a low recurring bill and your usage stays comfortably below the high-speed ceiling.

What counts as a cheap phone plan?

For comparison purposes, these price bands are useful:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Ultra-budget: under $20 per month.
  • Affordable unlimited: about $20–$35 per month, depending on taxes, fees, and billing terms.
  • Value premium: about $35–$50 per month for more priority data, international service, or hotspot access.

Always separate the advertised price from the recurring cost. For an annual plan, calculate:

Total prepaid amount ÷ number of service months = effective monthly cost

Then account for taxes, provider fees, renewal pricing, and any required AutoPay or new-line conditions. A temporary $15 introduction should never be treated as the long-term price.

How prepaid and MVNO plans differ from major-carrier postpaid service

Many low-cost providers are prepaid brands or mobile virtual network operators, commonly called MVNOs. They use one or more major carrier networks instead of operating a nationwide tower network themselves.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using the same underlying network does not guarantee identical service. Plans can differ in network priority during congestion, domestic roaming, video resolution, hotspot limits, international service, device financing, and customer support. US Mobile, for example, lets customers choose among multiple networks, but the feature matrix varies by selected network.

  • Mute Version: Operates silently, preventing any distracting noises while in use.
  • Compact Size: Its compact design makes it portable and convenient to use wherever you go.

Before switching, confirm the exact network and tier rather than relying on a provider’s brand name.

How to choose the right plan

  1. Check coverage first. Test your home, workplace, indoor locations, school or campus, rural routes, relatives’ homes, and common travel destinations.
  2. Review your actual data use. Check the last three months of carrier bills. If you use 2–10 GB, unlimited service may waste money.
  3. Separate phone data from hotspot data. Unlimited on-device data does not mean unlimited high-speed hotspot data.
  4. Read congestion language. “Unlimited” may include deprioritization or throttling after a usage threshold.
  5. Calculate the renewal bill. Include taxes, fees, annual prepayment, and the regular price after the introduction.
  6. Confirm phone compatibility. Bring an unlocked, compatible device, and check eSIM support if you want faster activation.
  7. Plan the number transfer. Keep your old line active until the port completes. Have your account number, transfer PIN, billing ZIP code, and device information ready.

Which plan is best for different users?

For the lowest simple unlimited bill

Start with Visible at $25 per month if Verizon coverage is strong. It is easier to budget because taxes and fees are included in the displayed price.

For a T-Mobile user willing to prepay

Compare Metro’s $120 six-month offer with Mint’s 12-month plan. Metro has the lower effective rate in the listed offer; Mint may suit customers who prefer a longer annual term. Compare renewal pricing, taxes, and congestion rules.

For heavy data use

Prioritize the exact high-speed and hotspot allowances over the lowest sticker price. US Mobile Premium, higher-tier Visible, or higher-tier Metro options may be more appropriate than Tello or a heavily managed entry-level plan.

For light data use

Check Tello’s 2 GB or 10 GB plans before buying unlimited service. A $10 or $15 plan can be cheaper than every unlimited option if your usage is modest.

For international travelers

Look closely at international data, calling, roaming, and hotspot terms. US Mobile is particularly relevant for customers who value international features, but verify the selected network and plan tier.

Other providers worth comparing

Cricket can be relevant when AT&T coverage and retail-store support matter. Total Wireless is another Verizon-oriented alternative. T-Mobile Prepaid offers direct-carrier prepaid service and price-guarantee signals. Google Fi may be worth considering for frequent international travel or multiple devices, while Consumer Cellular may appeal to older users and families prioritizing support. These alternatives should be compared using current plan terms, because their exact prices, eligibility rules, and data-priority policies change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

For most single-line shoppers, Visible is the best starting point for a cheap unlimited plan because its $25 price includes taxes and fees. Choose Metro for the lowest listed T-Mobile-network effective rate if you can prepay six months. Choose Mint for annual billing, US Mobile for network flexibility, and Tello for moderate users who understand that 50 GB—not unlimited full-speed data—is the high-speed ceiling.

Coverage and the recurring bill matter more than the headline promotion. Check the network at your real locations, calculate the post-introductory cost, and verify hotspot and congestion terms before porting your number.
