In a November 2025 article, Manian reported that private chef Charlie Ray, cookbook author Erin Clarke, and research and development chef Jill Houk all named Stouffer’s Frozen Homestyle Mashed Potatoes as a product worth buying. How to serve or upgrade them
Heat the potatoes according to the package instructions before adding extras. Ray suggests stirring in two tablespoons of butter, half a cup of heavy cream, one tablespoon of mayonnaise, salt, and freshly cracked black pepper. These are his serving suggestions, not a separately tested recipe.

Use them as a quick shepherd’s pie topping
Clarke suggests spooning the prepared potatoes over a quick filling of ground beef or lamb and frozen vegetables. Ray also names shepherd’s pie as one way to use the potatoes.
Turn them into potato soup
Houk suggests thinning the potatoes with chicken or vegetable stock. She recommends topping the soup with cheddar, scallions or chives, sour cream, and cooked bacon; for a vegetarian version, she suggests smoked almonds instead of bacon.

Make a crisp, shaped side
Ray describes chilling and shaping the potatoes into fried tater tots, with an optional cube of cheese in the middle. The article does not provide a tested method or cooking time for this idea.
A separate refrigerated option: Bob Evans
Stouffer’s is the pick shared by the three professionals in Manian’s article. A different account offers context for another product form: a July 2024 Chowhound article says Ina Garten used refrigerated Bob Evans mashed potatoes while recreating Thanksgiving recipes with store-bought ingredients. Garten heated them over simmering water and added butter, salt, pepper, sour cream, and freshly grated Parmesan.
