What the 2020 calendars offered
Beauty advent calendars varied in both category and format. A single-brand calendar could showcase one label’s products, while retailer-curated boxes offered a mix of brands. Calendars also differed in product size: some featured miniatures or travel sizes, and at least one 2020 listing specified a mix of full-size products and minis.
Across its roundup, Who What Wear covered 23 calendars spanning makeup, skincare, fragrance, nail care, haircare, and bodycare. Its named examples included Olive and June, Ardell, NYX, ASOS, Charlotte Tilbury, Ciaté, L’Occitane, Net-a-Porter, Dr. Barbara Sturm, Acqua di Parma, Clarins, e.l.f., Jo Malone, Lush, Payot, Liberty, QVC, Macy’s, Moroccanoil, Kiehl’s, OPI, and Dermstore. Forbes’ November 17, 2020 gift guide highlighted Kiehl’s, Armani Beauty, Huda Beauty, Inika Organic, L’Occitane, Saks Fifth Avenue, Dr. Barbara Sturm, Jo Malone, and YSL. The guide described Armani Beauty’s calendar as containing 24 products, including six full-size products and 12 miniatures. Those figures describe the guide’s account of that edition; the listed product counts do not account for every item in the reported total. UK calendars and prices
UK examples should be read in their original market and currency, rather than compared directly with U.S. dollar prices. Heart’s guide, published October 7 and updated October 23, 2020, described three The Body Shop calendars priced from £79.50 to £130. Heart’s 2020 guide
The List reported Lookfantastic at £85 for nonsubscribers and £70 for subscribers, alongside a claimed product value of more than £460. Its guide also named Feelunique and Boots No7 calendars. How to compare a beauty advent calendar
- Check the category: A makeup-focused calendar is different from one built around skincare, fragrance, nail care, haircare, or bodycare.
- Look at the assortment: A single-brand calendar and a retailer-curated collection can offer very different experiences.
- Review product sizes: Distinguish full-size items from minis and travel sizes; a high product count alone does not tell you the size mix.
- Read value claims carefully: A stated set value is an editorially reported figure, not proof of what each item is worth to you or what you would otherwise spend.
- Confirm the edition and market: Product contents, prices, and availability can change between years and regions. A 2020 roundup cannot confirm current stock or that a newer edition matches the older one.
