For a 2026 U.S. buyer, the best EVs to start with at around three years old are the Chevrolet Bolt EV or EUV for low-cost local driving, Hyundai Kona Electric for a compact crossover, Hyundai Ioniq 5 for more space and faster charging, Tesla Model 3 for a sedan with Supercharger access, and Audi e-tron for a premium cabin. The right choice depends on the exact trim, mileage, battery condition, title and service history, remaining warranty, and charging options—not age alone.
“Three years old” is a shorthand, not a precise measure: a 2023 model’s in-service date depends on when it was first sold. This guide centers on 2023 model-year vehicles, with nearby model years included where useful. The cited price figures are broad averages across model years, not quotes for a particular car or local market.
At a glance: which used EV fits your needs?
| Use case | Model to consider | What stands out | Key tradeoff | Reported average price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lowest-cost local driving | Chevrolet Bolt EV or Bolt EUV | Strong value; up to 259 miles for Bolt EV and 247 miles for Bolt EUV when new, by EPA estimate | Public fast charging is a weakness; best suited to buyers who can charge at home | About $18,000 across 2021–2023 examples, AP reporting Edmunds in 2026; broad average, not a current local quote |
| Compact crossover value | Hyundai Kona Electric | Nimble, comfortable seating, and more than 250 miles of maximum EPA-estimated range in the versions described by Edmunds | Exact version and battery or recall history matter; the 2024 redesign is roomier but may not be the value pick | About $19,000 across 2022–2024 examples, AP reporting Edmunds in 2026; broad average, not a current local quote |
| Roomier crossover and charging capability | Hyundai Ioniq 5 | Comfortable cabin and quick charging | Range varies by version: standard-range is listed at 220 EPA miles; single-motor versions reach up to 303 | About $25,000 across 2022–2024 examples, AP reporting Edmunds in 2026; broad average, not a current local quote |
| Sedan and charging network access | Tesla Model 3 | Used availability and access to the Supercharger network | A 2023 example does not include the substantial 2024 update | About $26,000 across 2022–2024 examples, AP reporting Edmunds in 2026; broad average, not a current local quote |
| Premium cabin | Audi e-tron | Luxury-oriented equipment and standard all-wheel drive | Range is the tradeoff: 226 EPA-estimated miles for the 2023 model | About $34,000 across 2022–2024 examples, AP reporting Edmunds in 2026; broad average, not a current local quote |
The recommendations and average prices above come from Edmunds as reported by the Associated Press in 2026. They are a starting shortlist, not a complete reliability ranking, exhaustive market survey, or prediction of what a specific vehicle should cost. The range figures are EPA estimates for new vehicles as reported in that coverage; they are not a promise of the range remaining in a used example.
Best candidates by use case
Chevrolet Bolt EV or Bolt EUV: value if you can charge at home
The Bolt EV and slightly larger Bolt EUV are sensible starting points when purchase cost and everyday local use matter most. Edmunds describes both as strong low-price used choices. EPA-estimated range when new reaches up to 259 miles for the Bolt EV and 247 miles for the EUV, as reported by Edmunds through AP.

- Age and Weight Capacity: This children's car has a maximum weight capacity of 55Lbs, suitable for children from 3 to 5 years old, with excellent reliability of use
The main compromise is public fast charging, which is weaker than on many alternatives. That matters most if you regularly take long trips or depend on highway charging; a home-charging routine makes the limitation easier to live with. The 2022–2023 models brought updated styling and technology. AP’s roughly $18,000 average covers 2021–2023 examples, so it should not be treated as a 2023-specific price or a local offer.
Hyundai Kona Electric: compact crossover value
Edmunds describes the Kona Electric as nimble, with comfortable seating and more than 250 miles of maximum EPA-estimated range. It regards the 2022–2023 version as a better value and a better performer in its own real-world range test than the redesigned 2024 model. The 2024 redesign added space and technology, so it may suit buyers who prioritize those changes over the older version’s value.
AP reports an average of about $19,000 across 2022–2024 examples. Because the price and range differ across years and versions, compare listings by exact trim and check battery and recall history before choosing one.

Hyundai Ioniq 5: more cabin space and quicker charging
The Ioniq 5 is the roomier crossover option in this group. Edmunds highlights its comfort, user-friendly cabin, and quick charging. Range depends on configuration: Edmunds lists 220 EPA miles for the standard-range variant and up to 303 EPA miles for single-motor versions. Confirm the specific car’s version rather than applying the highest figure to every Ioniq 5.
AP’s roughly $25,000 average covers 2022–2024 vehicles. Charging speed in practice also depends on the charger, temperature, and the vehicle’s state of charge, so a model’s quick-charging capability is most useful when the rest of a buyer’s route and charging plan support it.
Tesla Model 3: sedan buyers who value Supercharger access
Edmunds calls the Model 3 a strong used-sedan choice, pointing to availability and Supercharger access. AP reports an average of about $26,000 across 2022–2024 examples. The 2024 Model 3 received a substantial update; a 2023 car may be attractive on price, but it does not have those newer changes. Compare the actual car’s condition, equipment, and price rather than assuming the two model years are interchangeable.

Audi e-tron: premium equipment at a used-vehicle price
The Audi e-tron offers a luxury-oriented cabin and standard all-wheel drive, according to Edmunds. Its principal tradeoff is range: the 2023 model has an EPA-estimated 226 miles, as reported by Edmunds through AP. Buyers who prioritize premium equipment and all-wheel drive may find that reasonable; drivers who often travel long distances between charging stops may prefer another candidate.
AP reports an average of about $34,000 across 2022–2024 e-tron examples. That is a broad cross-year figure, not a current quote, and should be compared with local listings for similar trim, mileage, condition, and history.

How to evaluate a specific used EV
1. Ask for battery information, then judge the car against your needs
Request any available battery-health report or a diagnostic from a qualified technician. A dashboard estimate after a full charge can provide context, but it is not a direct measurement of battery capacity. As Kelley Blue Book author Chris Hardesty explains, “You can also charge the used electric car fully and look at its estimated range, but don’t treat that number as a direct measurement of battery capacity.” Recent driving, temperature, and climate use can affect the estimate. Decide whether the observed range is enough for your typical driving, with a margin that fits your routine.

2. Confirm warranty coverage by VIN
Read the warranty booklet and ask the automaker to confirm remaining coverage by vehicle identification number. Check whether coverage transfers to the next owner and whether the battery warranty has a capacity threshold. Warranty terms vary by brand, model, and model year; do not rely on a general description of a brand’s warranty to establish what applies to the car you are considering.
3. Check recalls, records, and ordinary wear
Check for open recalls, obtain the vehicle history, and review service records. Have the tires, brakes, suspension, and other wear items inspected. EVs have fewer engine-related services than gasoline cars, but they still need maintenance and can have costly wear or repair needs.
4. Match charging to your home, work, and routes
Map charging options on your normal routes and on trips you take often. Public fast charging matters more if you road-trip frequently or cannot charge at home or work. A Level 2, 240-volt home charger may require upfront equipment and installation expense; first check the vehicle connector, home wiring, electrical capacity, and installation requirements. Charging speed varies with the car, charger, temperature, and state of charge.
5. Verify what comes with the car
Ask whether a charging cable or other accessories are included, inspect their condition, and confirm compatibility with the vehicle and your charging setup. Do not assume equipment shown in a listing is included in the sale.
6. Compare like with like before judging price
Use current local listings and compare the same model year and trim where possible, adjusting for mileage, condition, title status, history, and warranty balance. The averages cited in this article span multiple model years and are not current local market quotes; they cannot establish whether a specific asking price is fair.
Do not include the federal used-EV credit in a 2026 budget
The IRS says the previously owned clean vehicle credit is unavailable for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. A buyer purchasing in 2026 should therefore leave that federal credit out of the purchase calculation. Before the cutoff, qualifying purchases generally had to be made through a dealer, involve a vehicle priced at or below $25,000 and at least two model years old, and meet buyer income and other eligibility rules. The historical credit was up to 30% of the sale price, capped at $4,000; those rules are not a current offer. State, local, utility, and other programs are not established here, so check current eligibility with the relevant program before counting on any incentive.
How to choose among the five
- Choose the Bolt EV or EUV if low purchase cost and home-charged local driving are the priority, and its public fast-charging limitation fits your travel.
- Choose the Kona Electric if you want a compact crossover and are comparing the value of a 2022–2023 model with the extra space and technology of the 2024 redesign.
- Choose the Ioniq 5 if cabin room and quick charging matter, after confirming the exact range variant.
- Choose the Model 3 if you want a sedan and value Supercharger access, while recognizing that a 2023 example lacks the 2024 update.
- Choose the e-tron if premium equipment and standard all-wheel drive matter more to you than maximizing range.
For any of them, the most important decision is the individual vehicle’s documented condition and remaining coverage, checked against the way you will charge and drive it.
