The $96 million is the film’s reported lifetime gross, not its opening. For the opening-weekend estimate, Rotten Tomatoes Editorial reported a $32.2 million global start in April 2025. Box Office Mojo’s figures and Rotten Tomatoes Editorial’s opening-weekend recap measure different periods.
What was The Amateur’s opening weekend?
Rotten Tomatoes Editorial’s April 2025 recap estimated a $15 million North American debut and $17.2 million internationally, for a rounded worldwide opening of $32.2 million. The Numbers lists the domestic opening weekend at $14,802,849, consistent with the rounded $15 million North American estimate. These figures are not contradictory: one is a rounded North American estimate in a global recap, while the other is a database’s domestic weekend total.

- In this spy thriller, Charlie Heller (Rami Malek) is a brilliant but deeply introverted CIA decoder working out of Langley. When his wife is killed in a London terrorist attack, and his supervisors refuse to act, Heller embarks on a dangerous trek, crisscrossing the globe to take down those responsible, his intelligence being his ultimate weapon.
The Numbers reports a $60 million production budget. Rotten Tomatoes Editorial described the global start as modest relative to that cost, writing: “A $32.2 million global start is not in the best vicinity for a film costing $60 million.” That comparison does not establish whether the film ultimately made a profit or reached break-even: the cited sources do not establish marketing and distribution expenses or the share of ticket revenue retained by exhibitors. The Numbers’ title page also lists a wide domestic release on April 11, 2025, and international release dates beginning April 9.
What are audiences saying about The Amateur?
On the Rotten Tomatoes page accessed October 7, 2026, The Amateur had an 87% Popcornmeter from 2,500+ verified ratings, compared with a 61% Tomatometer from 198 reviews. That snapshot indicates a more favorable audience aggregate than critic aggregate at that time. Rotten Tomatoes scores can change as ratings and reviews are added, so these numbers should not be read as the film’s opening-weekend audience score or as a measure of all viewers.

Rotten Tomatoes’ audience summary says, “Jason Bourne goes geek, The Amateur proves that heart and a good cast can elevate a seen-before premise into an action-packed, thrilling ride.” Its critics consensus says, “Rami Malek is a compellingly unconventional action hero in the otherwise formulaic The Amateur, which dispenses justice with solid execution but a curious lack of emotional stakes.” These are Rotten Tomatoes’ aggregate summaries, not quotes from identified individual viewers or reviewers. The cited reception data does not establish a CinemaScore or PostTrak result.
