Travel + Leisure’s April 22, 2026 review names nine options, from everyday silicone caps to a neoprene swim hood. A cap can help contain hair and reduce drag, but it is not a guarantee of dry hair or ears.
How to choose a swim cap
Start with fit, hair volume, and how you swim. For performance swimming, look for a close fit without wrinkles; extra material can balloon in the water and add drag. For long or voluminous hair, a roomier cap may be more comfortable and reduce pulling, even if it feels less streamlined. A cap that is too tight can create pressure points, while one that is too loose can shift.
- Fit and hair volume: Check the maker’s size guide and account for both head size and the amount of hair you need to tuck inside. A model described as one-size or medium will not fit everyone the same way.
- Material: Travel + Leisure describes silicone as more waterproof and efficient for reducing drag. It describes Lycra as comfortable and stretchy, less likely to pull hair, and longer-lasting than silicone. Its review characterizes latex as light and compact but more delicate than silicone. These are the review’s comparisons, not guarantees for every cap.
- Ears and hair protection: Ear cups or fuller coverage may reduce water streaming in, but even a cap that covers the ears cannot ensure they stay dry. Caps also cannot promise dry hair.
- Water temperature: A standard silicone, latex, or fabric cap is not a substitute for an insulated hood in cold open water. A neoprene hood is specialized and can be excessive for an ordinary pool.
The 9 best swim caps in Travel + Leisure’s review
Travel + Leisure updated its guide on April 22, 2026. Maggie Slepian authored the review, tested three caps for the piece, and incorporated insights from Travel + Leisure testers; the nine products should not be read as having all been individually tested by Slepian. Her article describes checking materials and sizing against brand charts, assessing strength and flexibility, swimming in the caps, and inspecting them after rinsing and air-drying. Slepian states: “After ensuring they were on properly, we went swimming for at least 30 minutes to test how well they stayed put, prevented water from leaking in, and how well they helped performance.” The article says testing would continue over the following six months, with possible updates. | Pick | Best for | What the review found | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Speedo Adult Solid Silicone Cap | Best overall | One-size, medium-fit silicone cap; easy to put on and remove, stretches without pressure points, and balances comfort, efficiency, and hair protection. | Limited ear coverage; water sometimes funneled toward the ears. |
| The Friendly Swede Long Hair Swim Caps | Best grip | Secure fit with little shifting, ear cups, and less snagging; sold as a two-cap pack. | One cap tore on first use, and sand was difficult to shake off. |
| COPOZZ Extra Large Swim Cap | Best for long hair | Generous silicone fit accommodated higher-volume hair without pulling or snagging. | Extra material could balloon in the water and reduce drag efficiency; water also reached the ears during testing. |
| Alepo Swim Caps with 3D Ear Protection | Best value | Generous fit, molded ear cups, and a set with two caps, two pairs of ear plugs, and two nose plugs. | Extra material makes it less suited to drag-focused performance swimming. |
| Arena 3D Soft Cap | Most durable | Testers reported no stretching, fading, or splitting during the test period; close, performance-oriented fit. | Runs small and is not recommended for larger heads or long hair; the review advises sizing up if uncertain. |
| TYR Latex Swim Cap | Best latex | Thin, light, compact when packed, and snug. | Best suited to close-cropped hair; longer hair or a bun pushes its capacity. The review says latex likely will not last as long as silicone. |
| Soul Cap Large Swimming Cap | Best size options | Size range and size guide help shoppers choose a fit. | Reviewers found it tight and noted movement that let hair edges get wet. |
| Vorshape Kids Swim Cap | Best for kids | Comfortable, snag-free fit that reduced tangles for a child with long hair. | Some water seeped under the edges, so it should not be expected to keep hair fully dry. |
| Synergy Neoprene Smoothskin Swim Hood | Best for cold water | Insulation and chin strap suited to cold open-water swimming; the review says it stayed in place in chilly Puget Sound and during pool flip turns. | Specialized and excessive for most ordinary pools. |
Which cap fits your swimming needs?
For lap swimming and a balanced everyday fit
The Speedo Adult Solid Silicone Cap is the review’s best overall choice for swimmers who want a straightforward cap that is easy to put on and take off. Its limited ear coverage is a reason to consider another model if ear cups are a priority. The Arena 3D Soft Cap is the more performance-oriented alternative, but its small fit makes it a poor match for larger heads or long hair.

For long or voluminous hair
The COPOZZ Extra Large Swim Cap is the clearest fit in this group for higher-volume hair. The Friendly Swede’s long-hair design emphasizes grip and reduced snagging, while Soul Cap offers size options and a size guide. The trade-off varies: COPOZZ’s excess material can balloon, the Friendly Swede had a reported first-use tear, and Soul Cap shifted enough for hair edges to get wet.
For a child
The Vorshape Kids Swim Cap was comfortable and snag-free for a child with long hair, helping reduce tangles. Because water seeped under the edges in testing, treat it as a way to contain hair rather than a waterproof seal.
Rank #2
- Protect your hair from chlorine with this durable swim cap made from pliable silicone and designed to fit comfortably without any snagging or pulling.
- Superior, soft texture
- Excellent stretch, pliability, and durability
- Does not pull hair when removing or putting on cap
- Latex free
For cold open water
The Synergy Neoprene Smoothskin Swim Hood is the specialized option for insulation. Its neoprene construction and chin strap distinguish it from pool caps; it is not the practical choice for most routine indoor swims.
For a snug, compact latex option
The TYR Latex Swim Cap is thin and packs small, but its snug capacity is aimed mainly at close-cropped hair. If you have longer hair or want a more forgiving material, the review’s guidance favors considering silicone instead.

Do swim caps keep water out of your ears or hair?
No cap should be treated as a guarantee of dry hair or dry ears. Fuller ear coverage may reduce water streaming in, but the review notes that water can still enter the ears. It also reports seepage beneath the Vorshape’s edges and wet hair edges when the Soul Cap moved during swims. If keeping water out is important, consider ear plugs as a separate measure and make sure the cap fits securely; a cap alone cannot promise a dry result.
Is a lycra or silicone swim cap better?
It depends on your priority. In Travel + Leisure’s comparison, silicone is the more waterproof, drag-conscious choice, while Lycra is stretchier and comfortable, less likely to pull hair, and described as longer-lasting than silicone. For streamlined lap swimming or a closer barrier, silicone may suit you better; for comfort and gentler handling of hair, Lycra may be preferable. The guide’s TYR pick also illustrates latex’s appeal—light weight and compact packing—alongside its delicacy and lower expected durability than silicone.
Rank #4
- LONG HAIR SECURE FIT: Designed specifically for swimmers with long or thick hair, this cap provides extra space and a contour cut that comfortably accommodates volume without slipping or pulling
- WRINKLE-FREE HYDRODYNAMIC DESIGN: Smooth, crease-resistant silicone reduces drag in the water, helping improve speed, efficiency, and overall swim performance
- DURABLE TEAR-RESISTANT SILICONE: Built from high-quality silicone for long-lasting use, maintaining shape, elasticity, and color through frequent training sessions
- COMFORTABLE & HYPOALLERGENIC: Soft, non-latex material is gentle on hair and scalp, minimizing snagging and irritation while ensuring a secure, comfortable fit
- VERSATILE FOR ALL SWIMMERS: Ideal for training, competition, lap swimming, and recreational use; designed for athletes seeking performance and reliability
What swim caps don’t hurt your ears?
There is no guarantee that a particular cap will prevent ear discomfort. The Friendly Swede and Alepo models have ear cups, while the Speedo cap has limited ear coverage and testers sometimes found that it funneled water toward the ears. Caps that press tightly or shift can also feel uncomfortable. Choose a fit that does not create pressure points, and remember that ear cups are not a watertight seal.
Do swim caps cause hair breakage?
A cap can pull or snag hair if it catches while going on or coming off, especially when the fit is too tight or the material grips strands. The review recommends putting on and removing caps gently to reduce friction and potential breakage; it suggests silicone may be preferable to latex for fragile hair. The Friendly Swede and COPOZZ reviewers reported less snagging in their respective tests, but no cap eliminates risk for every hair type.

How to care for a swim cap
- Rinse the cap with fresh water after swimming, particularly after exposure to chlorine, salt water, or sand.
- Let it dry fully before storing it.
- Store it away from direct sunlight. The review notes that sun, chlorine, salt water, and sand can shorten a cap’s lifespan.
