Factor is a strong fit if you want diet filters and quick reheating; CookUnity stands out for chef-led variety; and Purple Carrot is worth considering for plant-based prepared meals. There is no universal winner: recent reviewers chose differently based on their testing and criteria. This comparison focuses on U.S. services that deliver fully cooked or nearly fully cooked food, while flagging options that also sell meal kits or require special equipment.
Prepared meals generally need reheating; meal kits send ingredients for you to cook. Before subscribing, check your ZIP code, the current menu and checkout total, including shipping. Prices, menus, delivery areas and plan sizes can change.
How to choose a prepared meal service
- Check how much cooking is left. A ready-to-heat meal is different from a kit of ingredients, even when both come from the same brand.
- Compare the checkout total. Include the regular per-meal price, shipping, minimum order, premium meals and add-ons. A welcome discount is temporary, not the recurring price.
- Confirm delivery to your ZIP code. Coverage changes, and a broad advertised service area does not guarantee availability at your address.
- Check the actual meal details. Review current ingredients, allergens and nutrition information. A diet label is not medical advice or proof that a meal is suitable for a health condition.
- Plan around storage and household size. Fresh chilled meals may have short use-by windows, and many subscriptions are portioned for one person. Check whether freezing is allowed and whether the plan suits your household.
- Look at the heating method. Confirm whether meals use a microwave or oven, and whether a service requires a dedicated appliance.
These services are not ranked as though one could be best for everyone. NBC Select named Factor its overall pick and CookUnity its variety pick; Bon Appétit and Good Housekeeping chose CookUnity as their overall pick. Each reflects that publication’s criteria, not a consensus winner. Bon Appétit says its testers evaluated deliveries over multiple weeks for packaging, menu variety, reheating, freshness and taste. Good Housekeeping reports that its Nutrition Lab has evaluated more than 50 meal delivery services and gathered feedback from more than 300 home testers nationwide over several years. Those are publishers’ descriptions of their testing programs, not market statistics. NBC Select, Bon Appétit and Good Housekeeping explain their respective selections and methods.
The 8 services, matched to different needs
1. Factor: diet filters and quick reheating
Factor suits shoppers who want prepared food with a broad set of menu filters. NBC Select’s 2026 review reports a rotating menu of more than 100 prepared meals, with keto, paleo, low-carb, vegetarian, plant-based and high-protein options. The review lists plans of 6–18 meals per week and a stated starting price of $10–$12 per serving; treat that as the review’s price range, not a guaranteed current checkout price. Bon Appétit describes a microwave-focused workflow and varied wellness tags, while noting that some meals and sides were less successful in its testing. Check the current menu, nutrition facts and total with shipping before choosing. A wellness label does not make a meal an individualized health recommendation. NBC Select; Bon Appétit.

2. CookUnity: chef-led variety and fresh chilled meals
CookUnity is a fit if you want a changing menu of chef-created meals delivered chilled rather than frozen. Bon Appétit reports plans of 4–16 meals weekly and says the meals are fresh, with a stated refrigerated shelf life of 4–7 days. CookUnity’s official page lists weekly choices of 4, 6, 8, 12 or 16 meals and says meals arrive chilled with a labeled use-by date. Good Housekeeping reports availability across over 90% of the continental United States, but also warns about short shelf life and limited delivery in some areas. Use the ZIP-code check and the use-by dates on your own delivery to determine whether the schedule works for you. Prices and eligibility should be verified for your address. Bon Appétit; Good Housekeeping; CookUnity.
3. Purple Carrot: plant-based meals, with kits as another option
Purple Carrot offers plant-based prepared meals as well as meal kits. NBC Select reports prepared meal plans of 6–10 meals weekly and notes that some prepared meals arrive frozen and that delivery-date choice is limited. Make sure the item you select is a prepared meal if you want only reheating; a kit still requires cooking. Check current delivery dates and the live menu before subscribing. NBC Select.
Rank #2
4. Sunbasket Fresh & Ready: prepared meals alongside cooking kits
Sunbasket is useful if you want ready meals on some days and meal kits on others. NBC Select reports a rotating menu of about 10 single-serve Fresh & Ready meals, reheated in an oven or microwave, alongside the company’s meal kits. Its review notes labels such as gluten-free, soy-free, pescatarian and vegetarian. The review listed Fresh & Ready starting at $10 per meal plus $6 shipping; those are review-era figures, not a promise of today’s price. Confirm that the selected product is Fresh & Ready and check the current total at checkout. NBC Select.
5. Home Chef: a hybrid for families and mixed households
Home Chef is primarily a meal-kit service, but NBC Select reports that its Fast & Fresh selection includes prepared options and that four-serving oven-ready family meals are available. The review counted around 10 prepared options within a weekly menu of more than 30 meals and listed a $51 weekly minimum for its standard plan at the time. Those figures can change; check the current menu and plan terms. It may work when some household members want ready meals and others are comfortable cooking, but confirm which selections are fully prepared before ordering. NBC Select.
6. BistroMD: structured single-serve plans
BistroMD is aimed at people shopping for single-serve meals within structured, health-oriented programs. NBC Select reports more than 150 chef-prepared meals and five named programs: Signature, Gluten-Free, Heart Healthy, Diabetic and Menopause. The same review notes high shipping costs and limited plan formats, which may make it less convenient for couples or families. Program names describe the service’s offerings; they should not be treated as medical treatment or a substitute for advice from a qualified clinician. Review current plan details and shipping before ordering. NBC Select.
7. Splendid Spoon: plant-forward soups, bowls and smoothies
Splendid Spoon may appeal if your idea of a convenient meal includes plant-forward soups, noodle bowls and smoothies as well as ready-made meals. NBC Select reports more than 50 ready-made options and several plan structures, and notes that freezing guidance is available. Because the menu and plan cadence matter more here than a single meal count, check the current selections, weekly quantity and storage instructions against how you actually eat. NBC Select.

8. Tovala: scan-to-cook meals that require its oven
Tovala’s meals are not a generic microwave-and-eat option. NBC Select describes a QR-code workflow in which a compatible Tovala Smart Oven scans the meal code and sets cooking time and temperature. This may suit you if you want that appliance-led process, but the oven requirement and its cost are important trade-offs. Check appliance compatibility and current meal details before committing; other services on this list do not require a Tovala oven. NBC Select.

- Enter your ZIP code on the service’s own site to confirm delivery eligibility and available dates.
- Open the actual menu and distinguish ready meals from kits, oven-ready recipes and any other partly prepared options.
- Check the full recurring order in checkout: meal count, per-meal price, shipping, minimums, premium selections and add-ons. Do not use a first-order promotion as the regular-cost estimate.
- Read labels and storage instructions for ingredients, allergens, nutrition, reheating and use-by dates. Do not assume all meals from a service share the same shelf life or dietary suitability.
- Match the portion format to your home—single servings, multiple individual meals or a family-size tray—and confirm any special appliance requirement.
Menu size, delivery coverage, prices, shipping charges and plan formats are volatile. The figures above are attributed to the named publications’ 2026 reviews where relevant; verify current terms directly with the service before subscribing.
