Its picks are based on the publication’s tasting—not an independent test for this article—and its own notes make clear that the right choice depends on how sweet, rich, dark, or convenient you want your cup to be.
How to choose among the picks
Start with the kind of cup you want, then check the package directions. The mixes below span classic, milk, dark, white, and marshmallow styles, plus a slower-preparation drinking chocolate. Food Network Kitchen’s test followed each product’s directions: it used 2-percent milk when milk was required, chose milk when either milk or water was allowed, and used water when specified. Milk was heated on the stovetop when the directions called for whisking while warming; otherwise, it was microwaved when instructions simply called for hot or warm milk.
That approach matters when comparing tasting notes. A mix prepared with milk may taste richer than one made with water, and ease of mixing and preparation time can affect whether a product suits a quick mug or a more deliberate treat. Food Network Kitchen says it tested more than a dozen cups and selected eight; its roundup was updated December 18, 2025, and notes that prices and stock can change.
Food Network Kitchen’s eight picks
| Category | Mix | What the review says | Retailer named in the review |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best overall | Starbucks Classic Hot Cocoa | Rounded chocolate flavor without pronounced bitterness or excessive heaviness; positioned as an approachable choice for a group with different preferences. | Target |
| Best budget | Swiss Miss Dark | Balanced and not especially dark-tasting; described as a more restrained alternative to very sweet supermarket mixes. | Amazon |
| Best milk chocolate | Williams Sonoma Hot Chocolate Classic | Chocolate shavings, butterscotch-like aroma, buttery notes, and deep richness. | Williams Sonoma |
| Best dark chocolate | Godiva Dark | Rich, balanced, deeply bittersweet flavor. | Godiva |
| Best white chocolate | Land O Lakes Arctic White | The only white chocolate in this test prepared with hot water rather than milk; the review describes a rich cup with pale caramel-like white-chocolate flavor. | Amazon |
| Best marshmallow | Barú Fluffy Marshmallow Chocolate Powder | Chocolatey cocoa with full-size mini marshmallows that stay fluffy while sipping. | World Wide Chocolate |
| Marshmallow runner-up | Starbucks Marshmallow | A more widely available alternative with real marshmallows and somewhat less chocolate flavor than Barú, according to the review. | Walmart |
| Best splurge | Vosges La Parisienne Drinking Chocolate | Floral and tobacco notes; the slowest option, with five minutes of steeping after stovetop whisking. The box yields 3.5 servings. | Vosges Haut-Chocolat |
These are Food Network Kitchen’s category judgments, not guarantees that every drinker will prefer the same winner. Its roundup lists retailers, but not current prices or verified inventory here; check the product listing and package size before buying.

Which pick fits your preferences?
For an easy, broadly appealing mug
Starbucks Classic Hot Cocoa is Food Network Kitchen’s overall pick for its rounded chocolate profile and moderate-feeling richness. The review presents it as a reasonable group option when people may disagree about bitterness or intensity.
For a budget-conscious dark-style option
Swiss Miss Dark is the roundup’s budget choice. Despite the name, the tasting note says it is not especially dark-tasting, so it may suit someone who wants a more measured sweetness without a strongly bitter cup.
Rank #2
- (1) 4.78 lb; Canister of Swiss Miss Milk Chocolate flavor Hot cocoa mix
- Warm up with a delicious cup of hot cocoa—with the milk chocolatey taste and aroma you crave
- Crafted with premium cocoa and nonfat milk
- Contains no artificial sweeteners, preservatives, flavors, or colors

For a richer or more distinctive chocolate
Williams Sonoma Hot Chocolate Classic is the milk-chocolate pick for a buttery, deeply rich profile. Godiva Dark is the choice for a more overtly bittersweet style. For white chocolate, Land O Lakes Arctic White stands out in this test because Food Network Kitchen prepared it with hot water rather than milk.
For marshmallows or a special-occasion drink
Barú is the first choice if fluffy marshmallows are part of the point of the drink; Starbucks Marshmallow is the cited runner-up, with less chocolate flavor than Barú. Vosges La Parisienne is a different proposition: its five-minute steep after stovetop whisking makes it less convenient, while its floral and tobacco notes and limited 3.5 servings per box make it a more deliberate splurge.

What the testing does—and does not—tell you
Food Network Kitchen says it bought mixes that required no more than hot water or milk and no added ingredients, then recorded flavor, texture, and mixing issues. Food Network Shopping Experts describe the format this way: “In each of our Tested and Reviewed stories, products are tested in real home kitchens that reflect real-world use cases.” The individual speaker is not named. That gives useful preparation context, but the tasting remains the publication’s judgment under its stated method; it does not establish a universal favorite or current value at every retailer.
Good Housekeeping provides older corroborating context: its November 11, 2022 Test Kitchen roundup says it tried over 25 hot chocolates and prepared each according to package directions, using milk or water as specified. Because it is a 2022 selection rather than a current comparable tasting, its product list is best treated as additional options to investigate, not as a direct ranking against Food Network Kitchen’s 2025 winners.

More mixes to consider
Good Housekeeping’s 2022 roundup included Lake Champlain Chocolates Traditional, Equal Exchange Organic Dark, Silly Cow Marshmallow, Williams-Sonoma Peppermint, Jacques Torres Classic, Numi Dash of Salt, Dandelion Chocolate Hot Chocolate Mix, and Fruition Chocolate Works Sipping Chocolate Mix. These offer further styles—from peppermint and salted cocoa to European-style or sipping chocolate—but their current formulations, package details, and availability are not established by that older roundup alone. Check the present product listing and preparation directions before comparing them with the eight Food Network Kitchen picks.
Brit + Co’s December 2025 grocery-store roundup also names Silly Cow, Swiss Miss, McSteven’s, Numi, 365 by Whole Foods, Good & Gather, Equal Exchange, and Starbucks. It is supplementary author-perspective commentary, not a documented controlled test comparable to the Food Network Kitchen or Good Housekeeping Test Kitchen roundups.

Before you buy
- Read the preparation directions and decide whether you want a water-based cup, a milk-based cup, or a mix that permits either.
- Compare the package’s serving count and preparation effort, especially for Vosges La Parisienne, which Food Network Kitchen says takes five minutes of steeping after stovetop whisking.
- Verify current formulation, package size, price, and inventory on the retailer’s listing; the roundup warns that prices and stock can change.
- Choose by taste category rather than relying on “best” as a one-size-fits-all label: the published winners are divided by style and preference.
