The 8 Best Fish Oils for Kids: How to Choose Safely

There is no evidence-based ranking of eight children’s fish oils. Compare current labels carefully, and know why fish—not supplements—is the recommended first choice.

There isn’t enough evidence here to name eight currently available fish-oil supplements as the “best” for children. The useful comparison is the one you can make from current labels: age directions, EPA and DHA per serving, format, allergens, and any choking or vitamin warnings. Most children should first get omega-3s from food: FDA and EPA recommend two servings of lower-mercury fish a week, in age-appropriate portions. A supplement is not automatically necessary, and it does not replace fish’s other nutrients.

What “best” means for children’s fish oil

No comparative clinical trial or independent product ranking in the available evidence establishes a best children’s fish oil. Product labels can still help families compare what a serving contains and whether a format fits a child’s age and ability to take it. The label figures below are examples recorded by the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD), not evidence that one product is more effective or currently available at retail.

For a meaningful comparison, look at EPA and DHA separately rather than relying on a large “fish oil” total. Check the age range, serving size, allergens, and warnings on the package currently sold; formulas and directions can change.

Food first: how much fish should children eat?

FDA and EPA recommend two servings of fish per week from a variety of lower-mercury “Best Choices.” Their suggested portions are smaller for younger children: about 1 ounce per serving for ages 1–3, 2 ounces for ages 4–7, 3 ounces for ages 8–10, and 4 ounces for ages 11 and older. Choose fish from the agencies’ current guidance and follow its advice for children and local fish advisories.

Fish provides more than omega-3 fats. FDA notes that supplements do not provide fish’s protein, omega-6 fats, vitamins, or minerals. The agency also says research on the health benefits of omega-3 supplements is still underway. A supplement therefore should not be treated as a nutritional substitute for fish.

How much EPA and DHA does a child need?

There is no established Institute of Medicine recommendation specifically for EPA or DHA intake in children aged 1 and older, according to the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements. The adequate-intake values shown for these ages are for ALA, another omega-3 fatty acid—not a target for EPA or DHA from a supplement.

Age and sex ALA adequate intake What the figure means
1–3 years 0.7 g/day ALA adequate intake, not an EPA/DHA supplement dose
4–8 years 0.9 g/day ALA adequate intake, not an EPA/DHA supplement dose
Boys 9–13 years 1.2 g/day ALA adequate intake, not an EPA/DHA supplement dose
Girls 9–13 years 1.0 g/day ALA adequate intake, not an EPA/DHA supplement dose

These are Institute of Medicine values reproduced by NIH ODS; they should not be converted into a fish-oil dose. Do not apply adult directions to a child. If you are considering a supplement for a particular health concern, ask the child’s clinician about whether it is appropriate and how to assess the label.

Examples of children’s fish-oil labels

The following examples show why products should be compared by label rather than by a “best” ranking. NIH DSLD records capture label information; they do not establish clinical benefit, current retail stock, or that the package in a shop still matches the database entry.

Nordic Naturals Children’s DHA Strawberry liquid NIH DSLD brand catalogue lists a 119 mL liquid as on market Catalogue status is not retail inventory. It is a different product format from the brand’s older softgel record, which has been off market since 2015. Liquid catalogue record; older softgel record.

The amounts in these records are not directly comparable as doses unless the serving sizes and current package directions are also considered. A larger EPA or DHA number alone does not demonstrate better results for a child.

How to choose a product and use it safely

  1. Check age and serving directions. Use only a product whose current package expressly covers the child’s age. Do not infer a safe serving from another brand’s label.
  2. Compare EPA and DHA separately. Identify the amount of each per labeled serving, then confirm how many gummies, softgels, or packets make up that serving.
  3. Choose a format the child can take safely. Liquid, squeeze packets, gummies, and chewable softgels differ in texture and ease of use. Format does not establish greater effectiveness. Observe choking warnings and consider whether the child can reliably chew or swallow it.
  4. Review allergens and ingredients. Fish, tuna, and soy appear on some labels. Check the actual package for allergens relevant to your child.
  5. Distinguish fish-body oil from cod-liver oil. Cod-liver oil also contains vitamins A and D, and amounts vary. Excessive intake of these vitamins can be harmful; account for other supplements and fortified foods with a clinician.
  6. Ask about quality and the reason for use. AAP’s 2019 review notes that U.S. fish-oil supplements are not FDA-approved and that product contents may not match labels. A label claim is not independent verification of what is in the bottle.

What the evidence says about benefits

Do not treat fish oil as an established treatment for ADHD or other conditions based on marketing claims. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health reports that reviews did not find evidence that omega-3 supplementation is likely to improve ADHD symptoms in children and adolescents. The American Academy of Pediatrics’ 2019 review described possible benefits in some conditions among children with below-average long-chain omega-3 levels, while also noting limits around supplement regulation and label accuracy. Those qualified observations do not establish a general benefit for all children or identify a superior product.

When to ask a clinician

  • The child is very young, has difficulty chewing or swallowing, or the package has a minimum-age or choking warning.
  • The child has a fish or other listed ingredient allergy, takes medicines, or has a medical condition.
  • You are considering cod-liver oil or the child already takes vitamin A or D in another product.
  • You want to use a supplement to address a specific symptom or condition rather than to fill a clearly identified dietary gap.
