The current Travel + Leisure guide matching this topic names seven picks, not eight. Rather than invent an eighth tested glove, this roundup covers the seven recommendations the guide actually lists. They suit different needs: waterproof protection, maximum warmth, everyday dexterity, touchscreen use, fleece, cashmere, or battery-powered heat.
How these winter-glove picks were evaluated
Travel + Leisure says it tested a variety of gloves over six months. The recommendations below reflect that guide’s reported findings, not independent testing for this article. For a broader comparison, OutdoorGearLab says it tested 16 models in 2026 using controlled water-resistance, temperature, and dexterity tests alongside everyday wear. GearJunkie’s page reports testing more than 30 pairs across several regions and temperatures from -20°F to the 40s°F; the page says it was updated March 25, 2025, although its search listing labels it a 2026 guide.
Those guides do not agree on one universal winner: OutdoorGearLab names the Outdoor Research Sureshot Pro overall, while Travel + Leisure selects the HEAD Waterproof Hybrid. That difference reflects how warmth, weather protection, dexterity, and activity level shape the choice.
The 7 best winter gloves
1. HEAD Waterproof Hybrid Gloves — best overall
Travel + Leisure reports that these gloves kept the tester’s hands dry when held under a faucet and found them warm and comfortable. The guide lists polyester and silicone construction, waterproofing, touchscreen fingertips, silicone grip dots, and elastic cuffs. Potential drawbacks are limited breathability during cycling, excessive warmth in mild weather or active use, and fingertips that may feel too long.

2. Carhartt Waterproof Insulated Glove — warmest
Travel + Leisure names this its warmest pick. OutdoorGearLab also describes the Carhartt Waterproof Insulated as warm and flexible, but bulkier than some alternatives and not touchscreen compatible. It is a better fit when insulation matters more than fine finger control or compactness.
3. Smartwool Liner Glove — best everyday option
The lightweight merino-and-polyester blend offers everyday dexterity and can be worn beneath a thicker glove. Travel + Leisure reports that it is not waterproof, can get damp quickly, and may not provide enough warmth in cold conditions or while inactive. Its touchscreen function was inconsistent in the guide’s testing.
4. Outdoor Research Flurry Sensor Gloves — best for touchscreens
Travel + Leisure assigns this model its touchscreen category. Check the current model name and availability before buying, and test the touchscreen feature with your own phone: compatibility does not ensure reliable performance across devices or conditions.

5. Patagonia Synchilla Fleece Gloves — best fleece
The guide identifies recycled polyester fleece and touchscreen compatibility as key features. Fleece may suit dry, everyday use, but the cited guide does not establish that this model is waterproof.
6. Quince Mongolian Cashmere Gloves — best cashmere
Travel + Leisure reports cuff slippage and pilling after two months of testing. The gloves are hand-wash only and take hours to dry naturally, so they require more care than a low-maintenance daily pair.
7. Day Wolf Unisex 7.4V Featherweight Heated Gloves — best heated
The guide reports rechargeable batteries, warmth through the fingers and palm, and easy-to-use controls. Its testers reported up to six hours of runtime; treat that as a test-specific result, not a guaranteed duration for every setting, battery, or use condition. These gloves are thicker and bulkier than the other picks.

- Washing and Drying Instructions: Turn the gloves inside out. Hand wash at room temperature using a mild detergent. Do not wring the gloves vigorously (to avoid damaging the internal waterproof membrane). Do not use high-temperature drying methods (such as a dryer), as heat may compromise the membrane's waterproofing. Instead, lay the gloves flat to dry naturally in a cool, well-ventilated area or in the shade.
How to choose the right pair for your winter routine
Match insulation to activity
For standing outdoors, walking slowly, or spending time in severe cold, heavier insulation may be worthwhile. During cycling, shoveling, or other strenuous activity, a very warm glove can become uncomfortable. OutdoorGearLab’s guidance similarly favors less bulky gloves for many commuters and dog walkers, while reserving heavier insulation for severe cold.
Balance waterproofing with breathability
If you expect wet snow or rain, waterproof construction can keep moisture out. The trade-off is breathability: GearJunkie notes that waterproof membranes can trap more heat, while lighter gloves without a membrane may work better for higher-output activity. Consider whether your hands are more likely to get wet from weather or from exertion.

Think about what you need to do while wearing the gloves: handle keys, use tools, take a photo, grip a ski pole, drive, or hold a phone. More insulation can make fine movements harder. Check finger length, the fit around the palm, whether you plan to layer a liner, and whether the cuff stays in place and blocks drafts.

Check touchscreen and upkeep claims in practice
Touchscreen fingertips are useful only if they work with your device and the way you use it. Try the feature before relying on it outdoors. For cashmere, account for hand-washing and slow natural drying; for heated gloves, consider charging and the limits of reported runtime.
Are gloves better than mittens?
Gloves separate the fingers, making it easier to handle objects and use a phone. Mittens generally keep fingers together, which can favor warmth, but the cited guides do not establish a universal winner. Choose according to the balance you need between warmth and dexterity, as well as the cold and activity you expect.
